How To Catch Sharks
First off, some general tips before we get into the specifics for certain breeds. All sharks in Animal Crossing: New Horizons appear in the ocean, often near the pier though it is not required, and feature a unique shadow that you wont see for other fish. Instead of just the shadow itself youll actually see the dorsal fin sticking out as well.
When you see this you know that you have a shark ready to go. The rest remains pretty much the same, just toss your line in front of them to get their attention, then wait for them to bite and pull the bobber underwater. The reward will be in the ten thousand Bell range, or a fancy addition to your museum.
Theres four sharks available in the game: whale shark, hammerhead shark, saw shark, and great white shark. All are valued differently but will appear around the same time. Shark season runs from December to March in the Southern Hemisphere and June to September in the Northern Hemisphere. While the great white shark can spawn at any time during the day, the other three will only appear between 4pm and 9am, so try to stick to night fishing if you want one.
There is one way to get a lot of sharks, but it is unfortunately quite random. Shark Island is out there, and is just a Nook Miles Ticket away. However, there is no way to guarantee that you end up there when you take the trip. If you do, be sure to fill your inventory with them. How To Fish For A Shark
For the most part, catching a shark should be quite similar to catching traditional fish. However, sharks will be more elusive and challenging to nab. You need to buy or craft a fishing rod first.
Go to any edge of your island and face the ocean. Make sure that you aren’t sprinting otherwise, the sound of your footsteps may scare fish away. Sharks are far rarer than regular fish, so it may take some time to patrol the ocean around your island and find one to catch. It may help to throw out fish bait that you craft with manila clams.
As usual, you will search for the shadow outline of a fish. Look for a bigger creature with a shark fin sticking out of the water. Cast your line with the “A” button so that the bobber lands in front of the shark. The shark will lightly nibble on the bobber when it bites and your controller vibrates more intensely, hit “A” again to reel in the shark.
Your villager will catch the shark and proudly display your catch to the camera with fanfare.

Catching Sharks In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
For starters, sharks are unique because they have fins that peek out of the water. Here are the types of sharks players can encounter.
- Great White Shark
- Saw Shark
- Whale Shark
These specifically spawn only in the beach area, so don’t waste time searching for them in rivers or ponds. Using Manila Clams to create Fish Bait to bring out fish instead of having to run around for them to spawn. Throw the line and make sure to time it when the lure goes deep into the water. Keep searching up and down the beach until the shark begins to spawn.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is designed so that players don’t complete every objective as soon as the game begins. It is a game that is meant to be played over a long period of time. The change of hemispheres is one way to bring players back to catch the more rare fish. Sharks also sell for high value at Nook’s Cranny. Also, if the player has a friend they could visit where their island takes place during another time period, it’s another effective way to farm for sharks. Finding sharks in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is always a rewarding experience.

Other questions include: are they available, where can you find them, when are they active, and how much do they sell for? To start, the Great White Shark is available in Animal Crossing: New Horizons as of June 1 in the Northern Hemisphere.
Similar to other sharks like the Whale Shark, you can catch a Great White Shark by fishing in the sea and looking for a large fish shadow with a fin. The Great White Shark is the rarest of the newly added sharks, so you may end up catching a Suckerfish, Hammerhead Shark, or a Whale Shark before you reel in a Great White.
The Great White Shark is only active from 4 p.m until 9 a.m. while fish like the Whale Shark are active all day. If youre fishing and see a fish shadow with a fin at 2 p.m. its not a Great White Shark. If youre wondering whether the process of catching all of these sharks is the same, the answer is yes and no. To elaborate further, the Whale Shark can be caught all day while the Saw Shark, Hammerhead Shark, and Great White Shark can only be caught from 4 p.m. until 9 a.m. in the sea.
Finned fish arent always sharks as they can also be Suckerfish which are cute, but way less valuable at 1,500 Bells each. Keeping this in mind, spotting a finned fish isnt enough to guarantee youll catch a Saw Shark as you could easily reel in a Hammerhead Shark or the aforementioned Suckerfish. As such, the key to catching a Saw Fish is to try and catch all finned fish shadows.

How To Catch Whale Sharks In Animal Crossing New Horizons
The Whale Shark is available in the Northern Hemisphere from June until September and in the Southern Hemisphere from December to March. This means that players who live in the Southern Hemisphere who have not caught the Whale Shark will need to either travel to a friend’s island in the Northern Hemisphere or wait for December to roll back around.
This fish can be found at any time of the day, meaning players can hop on whenever they feel like making an attempt to find this fish. The Whale Shark can be found in the sea on the player’s island or on Mystery Islands. The Whale Shark is a large fish that will show a large shadow with a dorsal fin sticking up out of the water. Players will know they are fishing up the correct size fish if they are seeing other sharks like the Great White Shark or Saw Shark. If the shadow and fin appear to be too small, it is most likely a Suckerfish instead. Keep in mind that it is difficult to see the fin if the fish is vertical, so change the camera angle to check.
The quickest way to capture a Whale Shark is to force one to spawn using fish bait or scare tactics. Players can collect manila clams and craft them into fish bait to spawn fish in the sea. They can also visit mystery islands and scare off the fish that do not have dorsal fins until one with a dorsal fin does eventually spawn. Once players have caught their first Whale Shark, other Whale Sharks caught can be sold to the Nook’s Cranny for 13,000 bells.

How To Catch Sharks In Animal Crossing: New Horizons Explained
Sharks in New Horizons can obviously be found in the sea surrounding your island. What you do need to look out for, however, are the fins.
Unlike other fish, sharks can only be caught from fish that have fins. Thankfully, these fins are quite easy to spot, especially if you’re hunting along the east and west shores of your island. Depending on the time of year, you might finding yourself reeling in an Ocean Sunfish as well!
You can find these fish by patrolling the shores of your island, but, if you’d rather stick to a favourite spot, then you’ll need to make a good batch of fish bait. For each bag of fish bait, you’ll need one manila clam, which can be found by digging up the spots that spit water on the beach.
Fish bait can only be used once, but, thankfully, it can stack in groups of ten, so you can easily head out on a shark hunt with over a hundred bags of bait ready and waiting.
If you’re planning on going on a fish hunt, then we recommend fishing between the times of 4pm to 9am on the pier.
Fishing between 4pm to 9am is a great idea, because it’s during this period that all of the sharks will be swimming in the sea around your island only the Whale shark and Suckerfish are available throughout the entire day.
How To Catch A Shark
The first thing a player needs to look out for are visual cues. Sharks are bigger than most fish however, fish can also be rather big, so size is not the best way to tell if something’s a shark. The biggest thing to keep an eye out for when looking for sharks is a fin above the shadow in the water. This is the main visual difference between sharks and fishif there is a fin, then it’s a shark.
In terms of actually fishing for a shark in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it’s not really much different than fishing for any normal fish. To catch a shark, the player only needs to pull their line in when a shark bites down. Really, catching a shark gets tricky because the timing to catch one is different.
With sharks, the lure goes down much more quickly than with other fish, so the player needs to press A with quick timing in order to catch one. If fish, and therefore sharks, aren’t coming up as quickly as one would like, craft and use some fishing bait in order to keep the pace up.
One more thing to keep in mind is when and where sharks can be found. Sharks must be found in the ocean, whether it be on the player’s home island or one of the randomly generated islands players can fly to. If cliffs are blocking the ocean on a particular side of the island, the player can climb over them with help from the ladder tool.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

How To Catch A Shark In New Horizons
Catching a shark in the game is really no different than catching any other fish. However, there’s a distinct shadow that a shark makes that will distinguish it between any others. They all spawn in the ocean, so take a run around and look for the following shadow:
Once you find one of those, then just go ahead and fish for it as normal and you will hopefully have yourself a shark! There’s two other fish that will sometimes come out of the water from this shadow. These are the Ocean Sunfish and the unfortunate Suckerfish. The Suckerfish is going to be far more common, so you’ll just have to hope you end up with one of the larger fish to get more money!
