Animal Crossing Paths 15 Stellar Creations For Your Island

How to: Get “Paths” In Animal Crossing New Leaf

7. Grey Stones Mix n Match

The creator has a bunch of mix n match patterns for creating a unique path on your island. Some include a mossy texture in the middle, others are round or square. The best part about this is each tile is a self-contained pattern take only what you really like.

6. Natural Grassy Edges

If you like the look of the default Animal Crossing paths, these natural grassy edges look great. Theyre designed to sit on top of any path and give it a bit of an overgrown look. Since the weeds are so pretty in this version of Animal Crossing, it looks especially nice.

5. Floral Stone Path

This stone path is a unique look because the creator added tiny flower buds between each stone. While there are some large stones, the path is mostly composed of smaller pebbles. It looks great if you plan on creating a fairy forest on your island.

The downside of this path is that it takes up a massive 17 pattern slots. You can get by with just the completely filled out pattern if you use this on top of the default Animal Crossing paths.

4. Rainbow Brick Paths

If you didnt like the rainbow stone paths above, maybe these rainbow brick paths will suit you. There are six pastel colors available and you can see what they look like over each default path in the screenshot.

Weeks With Animal Crossing: New Horizons Reveals Many Frustrations

A new GamesBeat event is around the corner! Learn more about what comes next.

Ive had Animal Crossing: New Horizons for six weeks. Nintendo sent me a copy for review at the end of February, and Ive played it almost every day since then. I have more than 120 hours of playtime, according to my Switch Lite. Thats not as much as some, and thats actually one of the problems that Ive noticed since my review.

The issue isnt that I havent played as much as others but that I feel the need to make comparison in the first place. After the initial tutorial experience, which lasts approximately two weeks of daily play, New Horizons is devoid of explicit goals. Nintendo wants players to feel free to decide what to do. And while I havent put much time into achieving a 5-star rating for my island, I feel more and more like I should when I see others showing off theirs on Twitter.

When I wrote my review before the public release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I didnt realize just how much social media would change the way the game feels. Social channels were around in 2013, when Animal Crossing: New Leaf launched for 3DS. But they werent as ubiquitous. More important, it was significantly more challenging to post a screenshot from Nintendos dual-screen 3D portable than it is from the Switch.

Of course, that didnt stop me:

With the 3DSs superior online capabilities, the use of QR codes in the Animal Crossing community saw a dramatic increase with the addition of New Leaf. Many talented artists create their own designs and upload them to game forums to share with the public. Some even mimic the styles of clothing from other video games so that your player can dress up like protagonists from series like Pokémon or Final Fantasy. However, because the QR feature is not available upon starting the game, some work must be put in before you have access to all of the amazing designs.

How To Buy New Paths In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

When you first receive the Island Designer app in New Horizons, it will only allow you to make pathways on your island. The app comes with two types of path permits, which are:

  • Grass
  • Dirt path

If you want to purchase the other eight types of path permits, which includes the ability to place custom designed paths, the ability to craft rivers and build cliffs, then you need to visit the Nook Stop in Residential Services.

Once you’re using the Nook Stop, visit the Nook Miles store to discover that it has been updated to sell all the upgrades for the Island Designer app.

Below you’ll find all the Island Designer features that are purchasable through the Nook Miles store and how much each one costs:

How To Place Paths In Animal Crossing New Horizons

Want to make some paths to make your town feel connected? This guide explains How To Place Paths In Animal Crossing New Horizons as although its a feature practically every budding island explorer would love to have, its not actually available until very late in the game.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is a bit strange in its progression. Early on youre forced to cram buildings and other story-based progression constructions into a very small space, but cant move them until much later. Even later than that, you can finally start to physically edit the island by changing water, cliffs and adding pathways. By that point youve probably got a ton of stuff that needs moving, which is all very expensive.

How To Create Rivers Using The Waterscaping Permit In Animal Crossing: New Horizons Explained

One of the major highlights of terraforming and the Island Designer app in New Horizons is that it gives you the ability to create rivers, ponds and lakes using the Waterscaping permit. This means you can transform portions of your island into impressive lakes or nearly remove water completely.

Before you begin experimenting with terraforming water, there are two important things you should know about the capabilities of the Waterscaping tool.

The first is that you can’t remove either of the two river mouths on your island. You can place ground tiles in front of them like I’ve done in the screenshot below, but you’ll never be able to delete them.

Secondly, you can’t create your own river mouths. Instead, the Waterscaping tool will refuse to cut into the shoreline between the beach and the ground. This means that if you want to have a river that ends in the sea, it must be connected to one of the two river mouths on your island.

Third and finally, you can’t place a river in front of a tree, so ones in your way either chop it down or eat a piece of fruit and scope it up into your inventory.

With these three rules in mind, it’s time to start crafting some rivers!

To begin building rivers select the Island Designer app from your Nook Phone and pick the ‘Start construction!’ option. Next, open the permit menu by pressing + and select the option entitled Waterscaping Permit.

How to build custom paths in animal crossing new leaf

Once you’ve brought the path permits that catch your eye, it’s time to place some new paths around your island in New Horizons.

After you’ve decided where to place your path, open up the Island Designer app in your Nook Phone and select ‘Start construction!’

Pressing the + button when you’re wearing the hard hat will open the permit menu, allowing you to select which path permit you want to place.

Now all you have to do is press A to place the path on the ground tile you’re standing in front of.

If the tile you’ve placed is a connecting piece of the path, on the edge of a pathway or part of a block of four or more path tiles, then pressing A again will allow you to give it a rounded edge.

Pressing A again or for a second time if the edge of the path tile can’t be rounded, will erase the tile, returning the ground to its grassy origins.

The only places where you can place paths is the beach, the rock areas lining the shore and the plaza in front of Residential Services.

  • But New Horizons Has Real Frustrations

With New Horizons, Nintendo addressed hurdles that prevented some people from getting into Animal Crossing. And while a list of achievements like Nook Miles demystifies the game, Im willing to trade some of the illusion to get a more rewarding game overall.

My deeper frustrations with New Horizons dont stem from a comparison to New Leaf. Im still more hung up on the interface and multiplayer.

Before I get into this, Ill admit that I just spent a lot of words critically examining Nintendos decisions to streamline and modernize Animal Crossings mechanics. Now, Im going to beg the company to streamline and modernize its user experience. But Ill gladly declare myself a hypocrite to not have to go through four button presses and an animation to build one DIY recipe.

I get that Nintendo wants to make Animal Crossing feel conversational, and it should maintain that when it comes to the villagers and maybe even the shopkeepers and Tom Nook. But I dont want to have a conversation with my workbench or the airline.

Let me queue up recipes in my workbench and hook the bench into my homes storage. When I want to go online, I get that Nintendo wants me to go the airport. But then just give me all of the options in a single menu. Its baffling that if I choose the wrong option, I cant just go back one menu. I instead have to start the conversation over from the beginning.

    Its infuriating.

How To Unlock Path Construction Permit

In order to alter the land and create custom paths on your island, you will need to first help out Tom Nook with his tasks, and then get an island eval rating of 3 stars by sprucing up your town with more exterior furniture, fencing, and flowers.

Once this is done, K.K. Slider will visit your town, and afterwards Tom Nook will give you the Island Designer app for your Nook Phone.

Customizing Your Islands Theme On Animal Crossing: New Horizons

    QR path: wooden plank

Most Animal Crossing islands these days follow an overarching architectural theme, from sprawling urban cities, tropical pirate utopias, and space stations, to medieval fishing villages, walled Meiji-era Japan, rural Ireland, Greco-Roman agora, and Ancient Egypt. Some players have managed to replicate even fictional locations, like Hogwarts, Konohagakure from Naruto, Asgard, Gotham, Silent Hill, Pokemon, Avengers Compound, and the Mushroom Kingdom from . Some prefer a humble taste of home and create completely unique islands inspired by the places they live in, in real life.

Not everything is readily at arm’s reach, but players have proven time and again that improvisation is key to building the ideal island, not so much what is freely available and what is not. Silos, for instance, are typically used to decorate farmlands, but they could, conversely, serve as towers for medieval European villages as well, the sort used to flank a drawbridge, which could also theoretically be constructed using a mixture of waterscaping and custom bridge design. Paths are of course just as malleable. Whatever the style or theme, most of these can be made possible by the right combination of paths, terraforming, and furniture, but tiling most especially.

Tiling Properties On Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Erecting buildings from scratch is a life simulation perk that hasnt hit Animal Crossing yet. While the players home enjoys limited customization options and a roof! all free-standing properties on New Horizons are pre-designed for each villager and owner. In other words, they cant be altered. If Grouchos punk-rock home or Pluckys tropical hut is aesthetically displeasing to you, your only choice is to stick with it or replace that villager with someone with a more complementary pad.

Its not possible to put up your own buildings either. But it doesnt mean players cant have the next best thing: open-air establishments. Animal Crossing: New Horizons encourages players to carve out wide spaces on their island expressly for public use, but since it isnt possible to create buildings with roofs, most workarounds involve only outdoor establishments, like parks, concert halls, picnic glades, tulip fields, town squares, and marketplaces. These areas are normally brimming with vegetation: trees, flowers, and crops. But say you want something more hospitals, pharmacies, restaurants, gyms, hotels, offices, clinics, arcades, even places of worship there is a way to utilize paths for this very purpose. This is where custom designs come in.

Twenty minutes of a Nintendo Direct is usually about four to ten big things, but the Animal Crossing Direct was more jam-packed than a sticky child’s lunchbox. So much so, in fact, that we’ve had to split up our usual “everything” round-up into two parts: The free stuff, and the paid stuff.

Here’s everything you can find in update 2.0 for Animal Crossing: New Horizons without paying for it:
