You might want to dust off your copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
That 3DS game came out back in 2012, but Nintendo today released a free update for the life sim that adds new features. Notably, New Leaf now has support for Amiibo capability, Nintendos toys-to-life line that stars figurines based on game characters.
Animal Crossing Amiibo originally worked with spin-off games in the series Happy Home Designer for 3DS and Amiibo Festival for Wii U. Now, using them for New Leaf will attract new residents to your virtual town that live in an RV park. These characters can offer players items like an in-game Wii U console or a new New Nintendo 3DS, which unlock new minigames Desert Island Escape and Animal Crossing Puzzle League. That last one is especially exciting, as Puzzle League is one of the best puzzle series released on Nintendo consoles, as anyone who ever played Pokémon Puzzle League on the Nintendo 64 can tell you.
Nintendo is also releasing new Amiibo cards for Animal Crossing on December 2. Amiibo cards can interact with the 3DS just like actual Amiibo, although they arent nearly as fun to collect and display. A new packaged version of the game, Animal Crossing: New Leaf Welcome Amiibo, will also come out on December 2.

Inviting Visitors To Your Island Campsite Via Amiibo
How do you invite amiibo characters to your island? Ah, the Golden Trout of amiibo questions. And just like catching a Golden Trout, this one takes some patience.
In order to invite your favourite characters directly to your island in full interactive glory, you must first build a campsite. Once you’ve got a functioning campsite, you must wait for one random camper to visit . We recommend going through the motions to have them move onto your island – not only does this help move the game forward, but we’re fairly certain it’s required in order to access amiibo functionality for your campsite.
After going through this process, Tom Nook should mention to you that amiibo functionality has been added to the Nook Stop kiosk. The next time your campsite is empty, head to Nook Stop and scan in one of your favorite villagers – immediately after which, they should appear at your campsite. It should be noted that only one villager can visit your campsite per day.
Which amiibo can be invited to the campsite? Again, not all amiibo can be invited to camp on your island. Most of the general and “Welcome Amiibo” cards can be invited. Below are the amiibo which cannot be invited:
- Non-Animal Crossing-specific amiibo
- Villager from Smash
- Sanrio “Welcome Amiibo” cards
- Special character figures and cards

How To Unlock The Paradise Planning Amiibo Scanner In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The Amiibo scanner in the Paradise Planning office allows players to use their Amiibo cards to call villagers and invite them to a vacation home in Animal Crossing: New Horizons Happy Home Paradise, much like the Nook Stop in the base game. However, the process for getting an Amiibo villager in the DLC is much easier and doesnt require the player to complete any tasks to get the villager to stay.
After being promoted to a Promising Designer and completing their seventh vacation home, players will return to the office, where Lottie will point out the new scanner on the desk. This Amiibo scanner can be used to call specific villagers, prompting players to place their Amiibo card over the NFC touchpoint of their Switch or Pro Controller. Once the villager answers, they will be delighted by the players offer to build them a vacation home and come to the archipelago immediately.
Special characters can also be called once the player completes 20 design projects, which unlocks the ability to invite VIPs to the archipelago. Characters like Isabelle and Tom Nook can now relax at their own island getaway in homes designed by the player, as long as the player has the corresponding Amiibo card. Players can even invite characters from the Sanrio series of Amiibo cards to join in on all the fun the Happy Home Paradise has to offer.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available on Nintendo Switch.
