If I Purchase A Second Console Can I Transfer The Save File To A Different Console
After updating your Animal Crossing: New Horizons software to the latest version, you will be able to transfer your island save data or individual resident to a new Nintendo Switch console. See How to Transfer Animal Crossing: New Horizons Save Data for full details on the different options to transfer save data.
Additionally, if you have backed up your island data on your first Nintendo Switch console and lost access to it, you will be able to restore it on your second console. For instructions, see How to Back Up and Restore Island Save Data.
How To Transfer An Animal Crossing Island Onto A New Nintendo Switch Console
Transferring an island will allow you to move an entire New Horizons’ save file from one Nintendo Switch to another. This means that you’ll be moving all of your New Horizons’ player accounts and all the progress that you’ve made on that specific save file onto a new console.
It’s also the only way to move your island’s Resident Representative – the account for the player who originally started this New Horizons’ save file – onto a different Nintendo Switch.
If you’re in the process of moving all of your Nintendo Switch data onto a replacement console, then you must first transfer the user data for your old console onto your new one. Repeat this process until every user account on old Nintendo Switch has been transferred to your new one.
You don’t, however, have to do this process if you’re planning on keeping your old Nintendo Switch and creating separate user accounts on the new console.
Below you’ll find the instructions on transferring an entire Animal Crossing island from one Nintendo Switch to another copied, with minor edits for clarification, from the Nintendo Support website for the UK:
Transfer Your Entire Island On Animal Crossing: New Horizons
This option is applicable if you want all your Animal Crossing: New Horizons island save data transfer to a new Nintendo Switch. All progress of the game, your animal neighbors in the island and the customization you have created within your island will all be transferred and will not be available on the original console where it was originally stored. The Island Transfer Tool must be downloaded from the Nintendo eShop in order to use this feature. Follow the steps below on how to transfer an entire island.
On the source system:
On both the source and the target console:
When the transfer is complete, a message will show on the screen of both consoles and the island save data from the source system will automatically be removed.

How To Transfer An Animal Crossing Player Account Onto A New Nintendo Switch Console
Transferring a New Horizons’ player account will allow you to move one individual player resident from one Nintendo Switch to another. This includes the resident themselves, their house and any customisation they might have made.
This process can not be done for the Resident Representative, which is the user account of the user who originally started a specific New Horizons’ save file.
If you wish to move the Resident Representative’s user account onto a different Nintendo Switch, then you must transfer the entire New Horizons’ save file – island and all.
If you’re planning on moving the entirety of your Nintendo Switch data onto a replacement console, then you must first transfer the user data from your old console over to your new one before undertaking this process.
Though, if this is your situation, then we recommend transferring your full New Horizons’ save file, rather than just an individual player account, as described in the sections. If you’ve been sharing a Nintendo Switch, however, and you wish to create your own island, follow the instructions below.

Can You Transfer Nintendo Switch Save Data Between Users
While it’s possible to transfer user and save data between Switch consoles, you cannot share save data between different user profiles. In other words, if you’re playing Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on one user profile, you can’t copy your save file to another player’s profile. You can, however, access your games and save data via your user profile across multiple consoles, so long as they’re linked to your Nintendo account. Each Switch can have up to eight Nintendo accounts and user profiles associated with it.
While your Nintendo account can be linked to multiple Switch consoles, only one can be your primary system. When playing on a non-primary system, you must be connected to the internet to play titles you’ve downloaded unless you have the game data saved to an SD card.
Since the Switch Lite is meant to be played on-the-go, consider making it your primary device so you don’t have to worry about finding a Wi-Fi connection. Log in to your Nintendo account via a web browser to change your primary console.
When Multiple Players Live On One Island Does Everyone Have Access To The Same Places And Items
There are some tasks on the island that the Resident Representative must complete before the related features will be open to other players. For example, only the Resident Representative can receive and set up Blathers museum tent. Once the tent is in place, all island residents can donate items to the museum.
It is not possible to reassign the Resident Representative role to another player. If certain places or items in the game arent available for island residents, have the Resident Representative progress to the point where the item or feature is available for them, then try again.

If you plan to continue using your source system, please follow the steps below. It’s important to note that your island will be completely transferred and you will no longer be able to play on your source system.
