How Does Animal Crossing Work
You start by creating a customizable player, then you essentially build your own little life. The basic premise is that your character creates its own town or city or â in the case of the latest version â develops a community of anthropomorphic animals on a deserted island. Time is spent picking fruit, lying on the beach, growing plants, fishing, crafting items, decorating your house, and much more. The game progresses in real time, using the game console’s internal clock, and it supports local and online co-op gameplay, meaning you can play it with friends and family at home or far away.

‘i Get Up Early To Do Tasks’
“I struggle with anxiety and depression and I think the current state of the state of the world where there’s bad news 24/7, there’s not really a way to escape everything that’s going on,” Akemi tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.
She’s been playing games in the Animal Crossing franchise since she was nine – and even took time off work when New Horizons was released in March.
“Even though it’s just a digital virtual world and I suppose nothing you do in it really actually makes a difference, having a little place where there’s not a global pandemic and everything is pretty OK is a really nice escape.”
In Animal Crossing you complete tasks to earn money to build and buy the things you want. Very much like real life.
It functions in real time – so if you log-on at midnight, it’ll be midnight in the game.
And this means, to get things done, you need to head back to your island pretty regularly – and at different times during your own day.
“I feel better mentally when I’m in a routine,” the 23-year-old explains, “so I’ve made it a part of my routine to get on the game early and do a few daily tasks and then I just carry on my workday as normal.
“And then in the evenings I get back home and just having something that makes me feel like I’m doing something productive, even if it’s watering plants or planting trees, is very therapeutic.
“I think it helps that it’s these meaningless tasks that don’t really make a difference, but they’re just special to you.”

There is some info that can be gleaned from the trailer above on this subject. When it is detailing local co-op there is no disclaimer regarding Nintendo Online memberships. Once online multiplayer is shown, a disclaimer appears. This likely means that local co-op will be free to use without an online subscription. If this changes well update this page.

Does Animal Crossing New Horizons Have Local Co
We take a look at how local co-op works in Animal Crossing New Horizons.
Guideby Jake Green, Guides Editor
Animal Crossing New Horizons takes players to an deserted island setting, allowing them to set up a camp and start building. It looks to be a continuation of ideas first set up in Animal Crossing Wild World, though there have been some notable changes to multiplayer this time around. While weve not seen everything the game has to offer yet we do know a fair bit about the multiplayer functionality. Lets take a look at whether the game supports couch co-op.
You Don’t Have A Lot Of Time
Animal Crossing: New Horizon is pretty involved, but Pocket Camp offers a more streamlined gaming experience. For example, every three hours there’s a new animal at a given location. The mobile game is designed more for short, daily bursts of play, rather than hours of immersion. You can play longer, of course — there will just be less to unlock, unless you use Request Tickets to fulfill more tasks for friends.
Even though there’s a steady stream of events happening in Pocket Camp, you don’t have to participate if you don’t want to. Also, odds are the events won’t be as intricate as the ones in New Horizons, like Bunny Day, the island’s Easter equivalent. The first event I participated in was Sakura Picnic in the park. Most, if not all the tasks, were to collect sakura glass spheres, which were often rewards when I completed tasks.
My sister and I found each other on Pocket Camp.
The social aspect of Pocket Camp is also a little different. If any of your friends play Pocket Camp, you can add each other using your ID code. The downside is that you can’t “play together” as you would in New Horizons. When you visit a friend’s campsite, you’ll only see them standing next to their camper. Tap on them, and you can view their Market Box or give them Kudos.;

Yes, this is my bug-catchin’ dress.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become a comfort blanket for Nintendo Switch players during the coronavirus pandemic. The game’s simple tasks, like catching fish and bugs, decorating your island, gardening and collecting fruit — even just stopping by a friend’s island to say hello — are;helping many cope with the loss of normalcy. Island life has started bleeding into reality with folks turning their real-life living spaces into makeshift paradises. One of our editors even threw a virtual birthday party in the game. ;
I’ll admit, a bit of FOMO set in when I saw so many of my friends playing the game, but I don’t know if I could justify buying a Nintendo Switch — especially since the gaming devices are sold out almost everywhere right now. Fortunately, there’s another option — Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.;

Setting Up Your Island And Rerolling For New Villagers
When setting up your island for the first time, it’s important to keep these in mind:
- You cannot change your island name. Whatever you enter will be the full island name. The world island is not added to what you type in.
- You cannot change your name or birthday.
- Youll be stuck with your island layout for a long time, so make sure you have access to things you want with whatever you pick. Your character cant cross rivers or scale ledges at first and the traversal tools that allow you to do so take a while to unlock.
- You can change your appearance and youll unlock more customization options later.
After you set up your island, youll arrive with two random animals who are also participants in the getaway package. There are several personality types across the different animals. You will always have a female uchi character and a male jock. You can see the complete list of possible villagers here! You will also have a fruit native to your island — there are pears, peaches, apples, cherries, and oranges. If you dont like the villagers or your fruit you can reroll them by immediately backing out of the game by closing the software completely.
Remember, if you choose to do this, youre giving up your island layout. In addition to the new villagers, youll also have different default clothes and fruit when you reroll. Plus, youll need to go through all the starting questions again.
Animal Crossing Tips: Our Guide To Getting Started In New Horizons
The things to think – and not think about – as you settle into island;life.
After what feels like an eternity – okay, it’s only been eight years but we’ve been counting every day – a new Animal Crossing is upon us. And as our review explains, it’s a pretty good one too.
Those first few days in Animal Crossing can be a bit bewildering – especially if you’re new to this most eccentric of series – so here’s a few handy Animal Crossing New Horizons tips to help you make the most of your first few days as an islander.
And, once you’re fully settled on the island, check out our list of other guides at the end of this page – which includes various money making opportunities and material sources – and will be expanded upon in the days and weeks after release.
Don’t fret too much about those first big decisions
New Horizons offers a much more flexible take on the Animal Crossing, and many elements are there to be crafted – and re-crafted – by you. So when you’re picking out your first pitch for your home, don’t worry if it’s not perfect – soon enough you’ll be able to relocate .
The same goes with big facilities, which can be relocated by simply talking to Tom Nook at Resident Services. Oh, and you don’t even need to worry about your appearance – you can now change your features, or indeed your gender, at any point after you acquire or build a mirror.

Should I Leave The Hermit Crabs In The Game Alone
Hermit crabs love hanging out on the shore of your island. Leave them there. When you capture a hermit crab in the game, the screen says, I caught a hermit crab! I think it wanted to be left alone! In this situation, the game demonstrates surprising awareness that we shouldnt be bothering these animals and taking them from their homes.
In real life, hermit crabs can live for more than 30 years in their natural habitat on tropical seashores, but after being purchased in the pet trade, most dont live for more than a few months to a year. Dont take hermit crabs from your islands beaches and sell them to Blathers or Timmy Nook. Theyre not objectstheyre individuals!
What To Do In Your First Days
After youre set up with the first introductory day, by going to sleep after the welcome party, the island is your oyster. Tom Nook will have more specific activities for you to do that will teach you how to slowly improve your island. You may have a simple place now, but it can eventually grow into a bustling little village. Keep checking in with Tom Nook after you complete tasks to progress. You can also check in with him if youre unsure of what to do.
Be sure to talk to the other villagers to improve your friendship with them. You cant actively track your progress with them, but once you get the option to give them presents after a few days, youll know youre on the right track. Theyll often give you things in return too!
