Animal Crossing: A Perfectly Timed Nostalgic Release For The Daily Nebraskan Staff

Animal Crossing New Horizons – MUSEUM DAY 2021 CHANGES (Full Event Guide)
  • Staff

Since 2001, the video game Animal Crossing has touched the hearts of players everywhere with its customizability, creative elements and downright cuteness. The newest rendition, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, was released on March 20, nearly perfectly coinciding with the U.S. governments advisory to self-isolate due to the coronavirus. With everyone stuck indoors, the game has surged in popularity as it provides players with a way to pass time, interact with their friends and show off their progress. Many Animal Crossing-playing members of The Daily Nebraskan detailed their thoughts on the game and its merits.

My Animal Crossing story started back when 6-year-old me received a GameCube and the original Animal Crossing game from Santa Claus. At that time, my gameplay mostly consisted of collecting clothes to display in my house, becoming best friends with Mable and Sable and accidentally ruining the work of my mom, who was also an avid player. When I heard the new Animal Crossing: New Horizons game was to be released soon, I was so excited to be able to relive my childhood on a gameplay software far more advanced than I could have dreamed of at that age.

Invite New Villagers To Your Island

There are hundreds of potential villagers — all with their own personalities and unique designs — who can move to your island, but your little swatch of land can only accommodate 9 at a time. As you build on the barren island of the beginning of the game, hand-picking your cohabitants adds richness to your personal utopia.

To attract the first three townspeople, just buy Nook Miles Tickets to other islands from the Nook Stop machine in Resident Services. The first three islands you visit will feature a character excited to join your community. But once you’ve welcomed the first three newbies, Tom Nook will ask you to build a campsite, where tourists will stay for one day at a time. Invite campers, and they’ll also move to your island.

As a bonus, you can buy collectible Amiibo figurines or cards of your favorite Nintendo characters online, and they allow you to invite unique villagers with special attributes to your island. As those who have used Amiibo in other Nintendo games know, they’re not essential for the core game, but they add small elements to further personalize your experience, and sometimes even cross over characters between Nintendo properties.

Finally, befriend those villagers by talking to them every day, giving them gifts and sending them cards in the mail . Not only do you earn Nook Miles by befriending villagers, but your new friends will also begin to give you more gifts, like clothes and medicine.

Clocking Up The Miles

New Horizons vastly improves on aspects of the series that are familiar to us but it also introduces entirely new things to dig into. Like a new currency.

As mentioned, Bells are still the primary currency as you need them for pretty much everything.

But there are now also Nook Miles. This new currency is earned simply by playing the game and completing daily and more long-term objectives, kind of like an Achievements system. It adds a nice bit of guidance if you’re unsure of what to do with yourself. Completing objectives like planting flowers, catching fish and checking into the game each day will earn you Nook Miles. Heck, sometimes even spending Nook Miles can earn you Nook Miles.

Having two currencies in the game, one of which rewards you simply for being active, not only adds a bit of guidance if youre not sure what to do with yourself, it creates more balance with fewer instances of hitting a financial brick wall. Theres a pleasant sense that the decorative and creative fun doesn’t have to stop just because you’re using Bells to pay off a loan or trying to raise funds for a bridge.

Nook Miles are particularly worth collecting because you can buy some great stuff with them that you cant buy with Bells like more inventory space, some fantastic outdoor decorations and, at a later point, you can trade Miles for Bells if you’re in need of a real cash injection. Nook Miles can also get you plane tickets for visits to other islands.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Review

Back in 2015, I mentioned that Ive always been a softy for the Animal Crossing series, but I never really elaborated on why. As a kid, going to school was a very lonely experience, as the few friends I had moved schools due to zoning changes. On top of this, I was an easy target for social ostracism given my nerdy tendencies more often than not, I went home pretty dejected.

Naturally, I turned to video games as a way of escapefinding solace in games like Pokémon, Mario Sunshine, and most notably, Animal Crossing. Whereas my days in school were filled with solitude and sadness, Animal Crossing felt like a world I could belong in. One where I was in control one where I could have friends, write them letters and they would write back. Where the time progressed the same as outside and made it feel real. It sounds pretty ridiculous now, but too depressed 12-year old, it was a respite.

Now, as an adult, I mainly play Animal Crossing for the mellow experience it iswhenever I need a break from the intensity of games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Darkest Dungeon, or Monster Hunter World but it will always hold a special place in my heart. That love has carried through from every entry in the seriesyes, even Amiibo Festivaland with every main entry in the franchise, my fondness for Animal Crossing has grown.

Plant Plenty Of Fruit

How Many More Days Until Animal Crossing New Horizons ...

Fruit trees are a great way to get income early in the game, and once you get a shovel, planting a pear or apple tree is easy and pays off quickly. Another semisecret form of income: money trees!

Around the island, golden beams occasionally shine up from the ground. Dig them up and you’ll find a bag of bells . Instead of pocketing the bells and covering the hole, you can plant the bag to grow a money tree. In fact, if you select the bells in your inventory and portion out a bag of 10,000, you can grow a tree that drops bags of 10,000 bells when it grows up. If you do this once per day, you should maintain a consistent income of 20,000 bells per day, between planting and harvesting your money bags.

Look Out For Fake Art

Animal Crossing introduced Redd, the art-dealing fox with whom fans of the series may already be familiar, a few months after the game launched. Redd sells paintings you can hang in the new wing of your museum, but he also tries to offload knock-offs on unwitting players. When you ask to inspect a painting before buying it, check it against guides like this one to see if you should lay down the money or keep your bells in your pocket.

Alternatively, if you don’t want a straightforward cheat-sheet for identifying fakes, you can use , then make your own attempt to find discrepancies.

Why Is Animal Crossing Called Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing

The point of Animal Crossing: New Leaf is to have a place to go when the real world sucks. The real point is obsessively collect crap you wont necessarily ever use only to run out of storage.. then start leaving things on the ground near your house.

Weeks With Animal Crossing: New Horizons Reveals Many Frustrations

Animal Crossing New Horizons: MAY UPDATE REVEALED (Events & Holidays Confirmed) Announcement Details

A new GamesBeat event is around the corner! Learn more about what comes next.

Ive had Animal Crossing: New Horizons for six weeks. Nintendo sent me a copy for review at the end of February, and Ive played it almost every day since then. I have more than 120 hours of playtime, according to my Switch Lite. Thats not as much as some, and thats actually one of the problems that Ive noticed since my review.

The issue isnt that I havent played as much as others but that I feel the need to make comparison in the first place. After the initial tutorial experience, which lasts approximately two weeks of daily play, New Horizons is devoid of explicit goals. Nintendo wants players to feel free to decide what to do. And while I havent put much time into achieving a 5-star rating for my island, I feel more and more like I should when I see others showing off theirs on Twitter.

When I wrote my review before the public release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I didnt realize just how much social media would change the way the game feels. Social channels were around in 2013, when Animal Crossing: New Leaf launched for 3DS. But they werent as ubiquitous. More important, it was significantly more challenging to post a screenshot from Nintendos dual-screen 3D portable than it is from the Switch.

Of course, that didnt stop me:

The People Who Spent The Year In Animal Crossing

Snow topped trees, ice sculptures and the sound of rushing waterfalls. Susana Liang built out her Animal Crossing island complete with a Christmas dinner, various shops, a wedding reception, an igloo campsite, a picnic, a mini version of the Greek island Santorini, elaborate walkways and a cozy home with plenty of Christmas trees.

Winter makes everything covered in snow and its all white, so it makes it feel a bit more ethereal and dreamy. Its one of my favorite seasons in the game, said Liang, who works in health science in New York and has spent over 2,300 hours playing Nintendos Animal Crossing: New Horizons since a few weeks after the games release. Its always winter on her island. Every time winter is about to end, she time travels back to the beginning of January to stay in the season.

The game debuted on March 20, 2020 and has sold over 31 million units, coming in second place behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as the best-selling title on the Nintendo Switch. The global pandemic has also endured for a year, and Liang is one of many players who have spent the equivalent of a month or more playing the game and transforming their islands from grass-covered and rural to unique vacations away from real-world problems.

Gyroids In The Animal Crossing Franchise

Inspired by the Haniwa clay figurines that resemble humanoids, Gyroids was a furniture item that players could find alongside fossils buried underground. Gyroids were introduced in the first Animal Crossing game and were a staple in every game up until Animal Crossing: New Horizons where they were not included. Gyroids act as a furniture item that occasionally emits a sound based on the family, type, and size of the Gyroid when activated. Only a certain number of Gyroid can be switched on at any given time in a room, and when this number is exceeded another will turn off.

Lloid is the only Gyroid to make an appearance in Animal Crossing: New Horizons much like in past games as the NPC who collects donations for public work projects. This means that Gyroids do exist in New Horizon’s universe, though whether they will make a return is still up to Nintendo. Typically Gyroid will spout random noise if they’re activated, though if there is music playing they will try to stick to the beat of whatever music is playing. Though the player can normally have a limited amount of Gyroids activated at any given time, the combination of Gyroid and music would make for a unique ambiance for different parts of a player’s island if Gyroids were to make a return.

Siliconera Speaks Up: The Animal Crossing Best Villagers

How Many Days Until Animal Crossing: New Horizons Releases?

There are times when an Animal Crossing game can feel more like a Pokemon title, when you consider how many different neighbors could appear. After all, over 380 characters are in Animal Crossing: New Horizons alone. But which of these animals are among the Animal Crossing best villagers? Its a question with no real answer, to be sure. However, our staff does have some favorites wed like to share.

Im here to tell you today about Marshal. Marshal is a squirrel that could easily be mistaken for a fluffy marshmallow. Hes a little smug, but theres nothing wrong with being a bit pretentious sometimes! Especially since hes still so kind to lazy villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I love him for his pink cheeks, his cheeky demeanor, and the fact that he is super teeny. Look at his little face. Plus, the squirrels do that little upside-down V mouth that is precious. I forced Biff to move out for him!

Ill leave you with this performance of Marshal singing K.K. Sliders Two Days Ago. Jenni

All Marshal wants to do is sing Two Days Ago, but the butterflies keep distracting him! #ACNH

Jenni Lada

And I would know. Cube was my next-door neighbor in my first two Animal Crossing games, and I went out of my way to get him back in every game since. He is my best friend and pal, and Nintendo did something very wrong to him in this new game. Graham

All it needed was for someone to shout THIS ISNT HAPPENING! in adorable Animal Crossing speak. Joel
