The Three Multiplayer Modes
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a huge limitation to it that makes it so that only one island can be created on a Nintendo Switch regardless of how many user accounts there are. That means that if multiple people want to play from one console, they’ll all have to share an island together. Thing is, only the person who starts the game first will actually be able to make any serious island progress. This can definitely be frustrating for the other players sharing the island. If you’d rather have it to where everyone has their own islands, then everyone will need their own Switch and their own copy of New Horizons.
There are three main kinds of multiplayer modes: Local couch co-op, online play, and local wireless.
- Couch Co-op : This mode allows up to eight players to share a Switch and a New Horizons island. However, only up to four players at a time can play on the same island in this mode.
- Online Co-op: This mode allows players to use and internet to visit each other’s islands. Players do not need to by physically close. Up to eight players can be on one island at a time in this mode.
- Local Wireless Co-op: This mode is for players who are physically near each other, each have their own Switch, and their own copy of New Horizons. Up to eight players can be on one person’s island at a time.
We’ll explain what activities you can do in each multiplayer mode and how to get them set up.
Undefined In All The Right Ways
If I had to give an estimate in terms of raw hours, Id say that the latest entry, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, is capable of fulfilling you for a minimum of 100 hours .
There is technically a start and an end point according to in game events, but its also easy to lose the plot and endlessly tinker or relax for dozens of hours at a time.
While AC:NH doesnt have a story mode or rigid gameplay structure, there are plenty of goals to chase if thats the sort of experience youre after.
Its exactly what Ive been doing for the past 20 some odd hours and I know all too well how easy it is to fall into the abyss of aimlessness. But its the loose definition of the games systems that ultimately provides such a substantial amount of replay value after the credits roll .
The slow burn and overly tutorialized nature of New Horizons can make the experience frustrating at times, but it also makes the player more than ready to tackle every aspect of the game.
Despite the fact that Animal Crossing eventually ends when the credits roll, youll never feel like youre forced to do anything. The pointlessness of the franchise makes it what it is.
Game Mechanics And Concepts
The developers made sure to make the game not only welcoming new players but to also retain core concepts from the previous games to keep older fans of the series happy. A crafting system was implemented to allow the player to keep the player from running out of things to do after the in-game stores close. She mentioned how the D.I.Y. crafting system would keep players in theme with the game by interacting and using the natural environment to their advantage. Kyogoku took note of players who began playing Animal Crossing games via mobile apps, such as Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, by implementing the Nook Miles feature which would show the player what kinds of activities and concepts they can achieve by rewarding them to do so. The Nook Miles system also rewards the player for doing common tasks and collecting materials that would sell for cheap to keep the player from only tediously searching out expensive materials. Furniture and clothing accessibility and customization were emphasized for multiplayer so players could show pride in their islands.

Traditional multiplayer is unlocked by hitting “Day 2” of gameplay, which happens as the day changes for you in real life after first starting the game. How Long Can You Play A Day
There is structure in Animal Crossing and it offers goals to chase, but its unlike other games in the sense that its self limiting. You can fish or grind materials the entire day, but youre always going to hit a wall of diminishing returns. Of course, the game is a digital stress ball and sometimes doing absolutely nothing is the best way to play.
In terms of concrete things to do, New Horizons allows you to:
- Catch fish and bugs
- Collect every fruit
- Collect DIY recipes
This is hardly a comprehensive list of what to do in Animal Crossing, but at the end of the day its flush with traditional video game elements. And thats the beauty of the series it offers players the flexibility of choosing how they want to play. The best way to play is going to be different than someone else.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons makes it easier to play longer with the introduction of the Nook Miles rewards system. Building off the MEOW Coupons system in New Leaf, players are introduced to a revolving door of daily to dos.
I, like many others, binged the hell out of the game when I first bought it, but I soon found that the game is best enjoyed in small bursts everyday .

Why Are So Many People Playing Animal Crossing
As far as Nintendo games go, Animal Crossing isnt perhaps as well-known outside of gamer circles as series such as Super Mario, Pokémon or The Legend of Zelda. And yet the latest instalment, New Horizons, has become something of a phenomenon in this worrying new world we find ourselves in.
If you havent already come across it, New Horizons is a life simulation game, a more easy-going counterpart to earlier titles like The Sims. You start off by purchasing a getaway package to a deserted island, armed only with a tent and a few basic tools to tend to the land.
Although theres a basic storyline to follow, what you do in your newfound escape is up to you; among other things, you can go bug-hunting, try to fish up rare and fascinating fish, excavate for fossils, design your home, create elaborate gardens, invite friends over for a catch-up, or sit and stare at the night sky, waiting for a shooting star to pass you by.
Theres no endgame, no final boss: this is your own little world, to do with as you please.

In part, this is why New Horizons has been such a runaway success. Launched towards the end of March, it came out at a time when we were all finding ourselves confined to our homes, unable to visit our friends and loved ones, and generally feeling as though we were losing control of our day-to-day lives.
