The FULL Flower Breeding Guide for Animal Crossing New Horizons

If you want flowers that are a bit more exciting than those sold at Nook’s Cranny in New Horizons, then experimenting with crossbreeding is the way to go.

Before you begin your experiments, you must first buy your parent flowers. These are the flowers you’ll use to see your hybrid flowers and you’ll need them to be the same breed as the flowers you desire to grow.

Take a look at the section below to see which colours are available through crossbreeding and which flower colours you need to help create them.

Crossbreeding works on a 5×5 grid, with each flower, or empty space for a flower, taking up one square on this grid

Allow your flowers to grow, making sure to water to them every day, and eventually hybrid flowers will seed in the empty spaces you’ve left. Once fully grown, you can dig them up with your Shovel and replant them elsewhere on your island.

In the above picture we’re growing White Pansies with the aim of crossbreeding Blue Pansies.

Using this structure, you’ll be able to grow any hybrid flower you desire.

It’s a good idea to place your crossbreeding garden somewhere out of the way on your island. This will not only ensure you have enough room to grow your flowers, but will prevent you from accidentally running through or having to build a building on them.

Fences can also be used to section off flower patches, so that you can have multiple flower patches next to each other and prevent accidental crossbreeding.

    How To Breed Flowers

Flowers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons have some interesting mechanics. First of all, every island has its own, unique “native” flower. Additionally, you can find a second type of flowers once you’ve gained access to the Ladder. They can be found on the north side of your island. But you don’t have to settle for your island’s native flower. If you want to have a beautiful garden or completely fill your island with different types of flowers, you can do that, and here’s how.

    Prepare A Breeding Space

Before starting, designate a specific space for your flower breeding. It is a good idea to do this to, so you can better keep track of which flowers you need to water. Also, when it rains, flowers you haven’t watered will also spawn new ones, which can make cleanup quite a pain.

How Flowers Work In New Horizons

First things first, lets take care of the basics in case anyone does not know. Everyone has a native wildflower, similar to their regional fruit that is only found on their island. A select variety of seeds can be purchased from Timmy and Tommy, with more to come once you build Nooks Cranny. Two other ways to get more breeds come from visiting a friends island or getting a bit lucky at a Nook Miles island.

When buying seeds, one pack will cost 240 Bells.

Crossing breeding and hybrid flowers return from other iterations of Animal Crossing. The best technique requires you to plant flowers in a checkerboard pattern with a little bit of space in between as hybrid breeds start to grow.

Make sure you have a Watering Can to water your flowers. Also, rain can do the trick, too, in case you do not have that tool or are not able to due to other activities. It will take three to five days for the seed to grow into a flower. Keeping flowers around town will improve its rating and can lead to unlocking more facilities and opportunities.

Be sure to press Y when standing over a flower to pick it without taking away the stems. The stems will be able to regrow. Moving a flowers location will require using the Shovel. Another tip to not ruin your flowers and to treat them with care is to not run through them, or else you will destroy the petals.

Flowers are great for decoration, attracting bugs to capture, sell for money, and complete DIY recipes.
