Why Cant You Change The Name Of Your Island In Animal Crossing
As mentioned, the name you choose is the name you will always have short of deleting the game and starting over which is not an option for us considering how much we have done to our islands.
As for why you cant change this when everything else can be amended, well there has never been an official stance on why that is. For us, we think the main reason is to keep things simple. The name of your island is used so much and is such a big part of your online identity, that to be able to keep changing it will mess with that and could well be confusing for other players who are planning to visit you.
We do hope that the rules on this are relaxed and that you are allowed at least one name change at some point, but we wont be holding our breath as it does not seem like its an idea on the developers minds right now.
Why Can’t You Rename Your Animal Crossing Island
Given the fact you can change virtually anything else you dislike about your island, it’s odd that you can’t rename that too.
Still, it goes on your passport, people see the name online while playing multiplayer and having an ever-fixed name goes a very long way to forging a strong relationship with your individual little island while you play. Perhaps that is the reason why Nintendo didn’t include the ability to edit the name of your Animal Crossing island.
What did you name your island? Any regrets? Let us know below.
Switch To The Target System
Launch the game on the target system and select the user who will be using the transferred resident. This user must not have already played the game on the target system!
Then follow the steps below:
- Select Im moving when Timmy & Tommy ask you
- Select Yes, I have when they ask about a transfer request
- Select Start the process and Yes, that is correct when your resident and their current island are shown

How To Rename Your Island In Animal Crossing New Horizons
Sadly, as of right now there isnt any way to change your islands name in Animal Crossing New Horizons. When you start your game and choose the location of your tent, Tom Nook gives you the chance to name your island.
This is your one and only chance to give a name to your island, you can only use ten characters to pick a name and that will be final.
There isnt any indication given by the developers if future updates will allow players to rename the island but if a lot of players start asking for this feature, maybe Nintendo might give in and let players change the name.
But, if you really want to reset your islands name the only option you have is to reset the entire progress of the game. Starting again will delete your progress but let you select a name once again.
This method isnt recommended if you have progressed significantly, but if you are determined to change the name of your island, this is the only way.

Can Isabelle Change Nicknames And Catchphrases
From what we know so far, you can have Isabelle change villagers’ catchphrases by talking to her Resident Services . Once you do have her there, do the following:
- Speak to Isabelle.
- Select the resident whose catchphrase you want to change.
- When asking what the problem is, tell Isabelle it’s “the way he/she talks”.
- Repeat this process over several days. This should prompt a conversation with the character over time where they ask for new suggestion for this catchphrase.
- There’s a chance that this will prompt the villager to ask if they should leave. Make sure to tell them no if you want them to stay.
This will allow you to have control over your villager’s catchphrases, but to our knowledge Isabelle cannot impact their use of nicknames. Nonetheless, we’ll update this guide as soon as we learn more in the future.

All Grass Is Triangular
Grass paths are always triangular!
In previous games in the series, the grass had a triangular or circular pattern depending on the island, which was set permanently at the start of the game and could not be reversed without restarting the save file.
In New Horizons, however, the grass on all islands in triangular. There’s no reason to try resetting your game to get a different grass pattern.
Piles of Snow Change Grass Shape to Round
When enough snow has covered the grass, you will see the grass as patterns of round shapes on the snow.
Our Ideas For Choosing An Island Name In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
If you’re as indecisive as us, you might be sitting at the island name input screen in Animal Crossing for some time.
If you’ve not started playing yet, you have a little time – about 20 to 30 in-game minutes – to gather your thoughts. But once you get to the name input screen, you have to make a decision and stick with it.
So how do you narrow down the choice? Here’s some things which might help:
- Use an island name generator. One we’d recommend is by Samuel Fine, giving you a name that first perfectly within the character limit. Keep generating names until something jumps out – or gives you an idea for something else.
- Search Wikipedia for islands from different regions around the world to get inspired.
- Consider putting ‘Island’, ‘Isle’, ‘Cove’, ‘Sands’ etc as part of the name. The limited space means the other word cannot be too long – but it might give your setting more of an appropriate feel.
- Choose something similar to a previous Animal Crossing town name you’ve used previously. Or use the exact same one – make it a running theme!
Ultimately – it has to be something you are comfortable with. If it’s something you absolutely hate, the only way to change your island name is to start over again – and that’s a decision arguably even more difficult than this. So take the time to get it right!

How To Restart Your Island On The First Day
When setting up your island for the first time, it’s important to keep these in mind:
- You cannot change your island name after it’s set. Whatever you enter will be the full island name. The world island is not added to what you type in.
- You cannot change your name or birthday.
- Youll be stuck with your island layout for a long time, so make sure you have access to things you want with whatever you pick. Your character cant cross rivers or scale ledges at first and the traversal tools that allow you to do so take a while to unlock.
- You can change your appearance and youll unlock more customization options later.
After you set up your island, youll arrive with two random animals who are also participants in the getaway package. There are several personality types across the different animals. You will always have a female uchi character and a male jock. You can see the complete list of possible villagers here!
You will also have a fruit native to your island — there are pears, peaches, apples, cherries, and oranges. If you dont like the villagers or your fruit you can reroll them by immediately backing out of the game by closing the software completely after landing on your island.
Remember, if you choose to do this, youre giving up your island layout. In addition to the new villagers, youll also have different default clothes and fruit when you reroll. Plus, youll need to go through all the starting questions again.
You Can Only Choose Your Hemisphere Once
One of the first choices you have to make is which hemisphere you will live in. You can’t change this later on in the game.
This affects a variety of factors in the game, such as the appearance of seasons and what times of year Bugs and Fish appear in, so choose carefully!

How To Delete Your Animal Crossing: New Horizons Island And Start Over
To delete your Animal Crossing: New Horizons island and name a completely new island differently from your old one you should follow the steps below:
- Head to the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu and select System Settings
- Select Data Management and Delete Save Data
- Select Animal Crossing: New Horizons and then Delete All Save Data for This Software
REMEMBER: This is the nuclear option and your entire island will be deleted – progress, residents, configuration, the lot. It’s a potential course of action if you’re only a few hours or perhaps a day into the game before you realise you hate your island name, but beyond that you’ll be sacrificing a lot of progress, so think very carefully before deleting your island just to have a better name.
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter too much what you call your Animal Crossing island – the game remains the same wonderful slow-life sim regardless of whether you’re fishing in Paradise or bug-catching in Buttsville. Still, it’s worth taking a few minutes at the start to choose something you’re happy with because you’re going to be seeing the name an awful lot and there is no way to rename your island.
You Cannot Change The Airport’s Position And Color
Make sure to check the map when choosing the island’s shape as the position where the airport is placed is visible at the start of the game. This position is permanently fixed.
In addition, the Airport’s color is randomly determined from the following options.
|Possible Airport Colors|
If you’d like your airport to match your island’s ideal color scheme, it’s worth restarting your game to get your favorite color for the airport.

Changing Your Nickname In Animal Crossing New Horizons
Its worth noting that your nickname is not the same as your actual character name, which youre asked to input at the very start of the game. The nickname is what the villagers can ask to call you after youve played for a period of time.
Every now and then, you might see a villager wandering around your island with a white thought bubble above their head. This usually means that somethings on their mind and they might ask you for a favor, to play a treasure hunt, or just give you some clothes or furniture.
Its also possible for them to ask if they can call you by a certain nickname, usually somewhat tangentially related to your character name.
If you say yes, that character will call you by that nickname every time you talk to them. As time goes on, other villagers may also ask if they can adopt that moniker for you as well. However, if you grow to hate the name they picked for you, it is possible to change it, though this may take a bit of time.
To change your nickname in Animal Crossing New Horizons, you just need to keep playing the game until you see a villager with a white thought bubble above their head again.
Talk to them, and you might have a chance to pick a new nickname for yourself. Other than that, its just a matter of waiting till that opportunity presents itself. Unfortunately, theres no other way to get around this, and talking to Isabelle about your residents doesnt help either.

In order to change your characters hairstyle and get a haircut in the game, youre going to want to head over to a vanity/mirror first!
There are a few ways to get it. One can be found in presents or given to you by a neighbour. Also, the DIY recipe for a mirror can be found in the message in a bottle that washes up on the shores of your island pretty early on in the game.

Can You Change The Name Of Your Island In Animal Crossing New Horizons
Unfortunately, you will not be able to change the name of your island after you name it at the very beginning of the game.
Once you start the game and choose a place for your tent, Tom Nuk will appear and ask you to name the island. You can give him any name no longer than ten characters long, so think carefully about this point, because there will be no going back.
Of course, you can start the game again to name the island differently. We do not recommend to do this if you have already spent at least an hour of your time on the game, because it just doesnt make sense.
Its quite possible that in the future Nintendo will release a patch that will include the option to change the name of your island, although its not really necessary in general.
