Changing Your Appearance In New Horizons
In order to change your Animal Crossing: New Horizons character appearance, youll need to first obtain a Mirror or Vanity furniture item. When you find one, place the item as furniture either somewhere inside your homes interior, or anywhere you please outdoors on the island!
Once youve got your Mirror or Vanity furniture ready, simply walk up to the item and press A to interact with it. Youll be brought into a character creator interface very similar to the one first seen at the beginning of the game when you initially created your character!
Inside of this character menu, you can customize absolutely every part of your player including hair, eyes, mouth, nose, skin tone, and more. By default, youll only find the same options that were available to you at the beginning of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but more can be unlocked later.

How To Change Your Hair In Animal Crossing New Horizons
In order to change your characters hairstyle and get a haircut in the game, youre going to want to head over to a vanity/mirror first!
There are a few ways to get it. One can be found in presents or given to you by a neighbour. Also, the DIY recipe for a mirror can be found in the message in a bottle that washes up on the shores of your island pretty early on in the game.
The recipe asks for five pieces of wood and one iron nugget. Just craft that at your workbench once you have the recipe and youll be good to change your hair.
Once you have it, simply head over to the vanity, interact with it by pressing A, and choose a new hairstyle there. There are a bunch to pick from, as well as different color variants. Besides hair, you can also change your skin tone, eyes, mouth, and more.

Befriend Villagers In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The key to changing a villager’s clothing lies in the hidden Friendship system in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The Friendship system is points-based, and players earn points by speaking with the villager, doing favors for them and giving them gifts.
To change a villager’s outfit, players should first speak regularly to the villager. They need to be careful not to overdo this and annoy the villager, but they should try to hold a small conversation with the villager each day. This should help contribute to their Friendship score. Players can also send gifts to villagers and perform favors around the island to increase their Friendship.
Once players have a high enough Friendship score with a certain villager, they will see the dialogue option to hand the villager an item. Normally, the player will be able to choose to say something like, “Do you want this?” or “This is for you.” This option will open a player’s pocket inventory and allow them to offer a gift to the villager in real-time, which is the easiest way to get a villager to change their clothing.

You Can Only Choose Your Hemisphere Once
One of the first choices you have to make is which hemisphere you will live in. You can’t change this later on in the game.
This affects a variety of factors in the game, such as the appearance of seasons and what times of year Bugs and Fish appear in, so choose carefully!
How To Change Character Appearance Gender & More In Animal Crossing New Horizons
In previous Animal Crossing titles, you were able to pick what gender your character was and then had to take a quiz that would randomly determine the facial features of your character.
It was kind of cute, but you either had to start the game over or deal with it if you got a look you didnt like. Also, the only way to change skin color was to tan excessively, so the new method takes less work.
You can customize your character at the very beginning of the game when Timmy and Tommy ask to take a picture of you. The options are gender, skin tone, hairstyle, eyes, nose/mouth, and cheeks.
To change your gender and appearance anytime after, you will need to own a piece of furniture that contains a mirror, or vanity. Once you own furniture like that, set it up in your house, select it with the A button, and choose Change it up!
You will be presented with the same exact appearance menu form the start of the game and can then change the same options as above. Although, if you would like new hairstyles and colors, those will have to be purchased at the Nook Stop with Nook Miles.

Can You Change Your Name
Creating your character in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a big deal, as it is not only how you see yourself, but also how others will see you in the game. Your name also is part of that, whether you are wanting to go with your real name or give your created character and original name.
One of the first things you are asked to do in the game by Timmy and Tommy Nook is to pick your name. However, the big stipulation here is that the name you pick now is the name you will be stuck with. While there are some other things that you can change later in the game like your appearance, your Villagers name is permanent.
The only real way to actually change your name in Animal Crossing: New Horizons would be to actually reset the island as a whole by starting the whole game over again. If you are interested in how to do that, we have another guide covering that topic right here.
Considering that is a big ordeal that wipes out all of your progress to date, you probably will not want to go that route. As a result, make sure you take your time and pick the perfect name that you will be happy with. Just remember that you cannot include personal info or offensive words when setting your name.

Don’t Like Your Villagers’ Catchphrase You Can Change It
While not every villager comes with such an endearing pattern of speech, you do have some control over what they say. After you get to know your neighbors a little better by talking to them every day, they will eventually approach you for advice on whether to keep or change their catchphrase. When they do, indicate with your response that it might be time for a change, and then you can type whatever phrase you want them to say as long as it isn’t obscene; this is a kids’ game.;
After a while, you may start to notice that, like slang tends to do in real life, your villagers’ catchphrases will spread among other villagers, so choose wisely. Right now half my villagers are saying “okurrr?” like Cardi B and it’s getting a little tired.
You can also change the nicknames your villagers use for you in a similar manner. Villagers will ask if they could call you something other than the nickname they started calling you by at the start. But just as in real life, you can’t make up your own nickname. They’ll float their idea for what they’d like to start calling you, and you can either say that’s fine or that you’d prefer they didn’t call you that. Be careful before you say yes, though, because after a while other villagers will start calling you that, too.
How To Transfer Animal Crossing Save Data Guide
For around eight months after launch, it was impossible for players to transfer their Animal Crossing: New Horizons island from one Nintendo Switch to another. Once you began a save file on a Switch, your island was tied permanently to that console a sizeable problem if you bought a new Switch, for instance.
Nintendo announced that a solution was coming eventually and, thankfully, it arrived in November 2020.

There are two types of Animal Crossing data transfers available. If you’ve got yourself a brand new Switch and want to transfer absolutely everything to the new console, you’ll want to choose ‘Entire Island Transfer’. As you’d expect from the title, this moves your entire island and save file including all residents to the new console.
Here are more details from Nintendo:
Entire Island TransferUse this feature if you wish to transfer the entire island and all residents to a new Nintendo Switch system. The island, all progress and customizations, your animal neighbors, the island resident representative, and any other residents that have been created on the island will be transferred.
This feature is helpful if you are replacing your Nintendo Switch system with a new one and all players who have played Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be using the new Nintendo Switch system. It is also the only way to transfer your island resident representative when you have not backed up your island.

How To Change Characters
As I said, this could mean two things. If you just want to change your characters appearance then click there to read all about that. With that out of the way, lets explore the real reason I created this guide, which is actually changing your character. Whether its creating a new one, or loading the game as another profile, this can be done outside of the game. In fact, thats how its managed: in the Switchs system menu.
Every island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons can house up to eight different characters. All of these are playable, but to switch to them you have to save and exit the game. Then just switch which profile you load the game with. If you just want a new character you can create a fresh profile by going to System Settings, Users, and add user. Then just open the game and choose this new profile and youll be creating a new character inside of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
So thats how to change characters in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. You have those two choices of either altering your appearance or actually making a new one and living on the island side by side with your original. And if you need to get rid of any of them just go to the main menu and hit minus to get to settings. Here you can erase any character other than the first you used to start the game.
