How To Cross Rivers
Starting out you just need to follow the tasks given to you by Tom Nook. He will set you out on this island in search of unique species of fish and bugs. Bring them back to him and youll eventually unlock the museum. Now is where the patience comes in. Blathers has agreed to come to the island, but he wont arrive until the next day. So you just have to wait for him to arrive, and due to the games real time clock that means literally waiting until the next day. Once he does get there just speak with him to receive the Vaulting Pole DIY recipe.
This requires five pieces of softwood so go grab that and craft it. Now you can use this to jump across the rivers and water that have been blocking you for so many long, agonizing hours. And thats how to cross rivers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Once you make it across the whole island is open to you, so be sure to check out our many other guides on what to do and how to proceed in your game. The game is still just starting though, so have fun and be ready to do a lot more waiting.

Catch 5 Unique Bugs Or Fish And Give Them To Tom Nook
Before this ,you will need to have your Nook phone and you will also need to have completed Toms DIY workshop, where you will learn how to make a flimsy fishing rod and flimsy net.
Although the workshop is fun, all these things Tom Nook invites you to do have an ulterior motive. Not in a sinister sense, but in terms of laying out the groundwork for other tasks that will need to be completed to advance in the game.
So learning the DIY recipe for the flimsy fishing rod and net help you on your way to catching the fauna which Tom expresses interest in.
Once you have your Nook phone and fishing rod, you will have the correct set of tools to head out and catch those critters!
They can be all fish, all bugs or a combination of the two. The only stipulation is they must all be different.
You will then need to speak to Tom Nook in the resident services tentwhere a new option will appear: I found a creature.
You can hand Tom your findings individually or wait until you have all 5 before heading over to the resident services tent. Given the limited pocket space that you have initially, you may wish to do this one at a time.
Once you have delivered your 5 items, Tom will then ask if he can send them to his old friend.
This is where you first find out about Blathers, the feathered museum curator who is keen to open up a museum on your island.
When you accept his offer, Tom will get a call from Blathers, who will need somewhere to stay for his visit.

Tom Nook won’t accept the same Bug or Fish more than once
When giving critters to Tom Nook, be sure to give him bugs and fish of different kinds. It won’t count if you give a critter of the same species that you’ve already submitted!

How To Get Across The River
Getting across the river isn’t too hard, you just need the right tool for the job! The tool required is the Vaulting Pole, which can be obtained on the second full day on the island! First, you are going to want to run through the basic tutorial of the game. This is pretty much an hour or so of playing through the game and following orders. Once you’ve free and on your own, you will want to get yourself at the very least a Bug Net or a Fishing Pole. These are pretty easy to get, just grab some branches off the ground and then craft them at the crafting table. You can find this in the green tent that houses Tom Nook.
Now, you need to catch five different bugs or fish! It doesn’t matter which of these you find, but they have to be five unique ones. So, catching a mix of both bugs and fish will likely be easier! If it’s night time, I found that fish were a lot easier. Bugs are harder to find, but there’s usually a Moth flying around outside of Nook’s tent. Be careful for the spiders though, they will lunge at you if you’re not careful! Once you have your five unique items, you need to bring them back to the green tent and hand them off to Tom Nook!

You should know that it takes many hours if you want to do anything substantial, since you can only adjust the terrain one block/space at a time.
Go Speak To Blathers In His Tent
When the next day eventually rolls around, make sure to make a beeline for Blathers. Hell be in his tent, and itll quickly emerge that he needs your help to gather enough exhibits to secure permission to open the museum. He needs more bugs, more fish and some fossils in order to get permission. But, it turns out the fossils he thinks exist on your island lie across the river.
Thankfully, he recognises that anywhere over the river is currently a no-go zone, and quickly transfers recipes for the vaulting pole, and the flimsy Animal Crossing: New Horizons shovel, to your NookPhone. Hurrah!
All thats left to do then is go and craft your vault pole and shovel. Youll need five pieces of softwood in order to craft it, so go hit some trees with your flimsy axe if you havent got enough.

If youre an old player of Anime Crossing, you know that crossing the rivers is not an issue. But with the new mechanics in the newly released Anime Crossing: New Horizons, you are required to do something to fully explore your island.
In the beginning, you will find your self in a small section of your island which is separated with rivers. Since there is still no bridges that you can use when youre exploring, you need to use a vaulting pole to cross the bridge. But how can you get the vaulting pole?
In this Animal Crossing: New Horizons guide, we will be telling you on all the methods on how to cross the rivers in your island.
How To Get The Ladder To Climb Cliffs & Ledges
In order to climb up the cliffs on your deserted island and explore the higher levels, youll need to get your hands on the important Ladder tool item. Its essential because you cant fully explore every part of your island and conquer those pesky cliffs until you have it.
Unlocking the Ladder requires you to first make it to at least the third full day on the island. Youll know when you have reached the right part of the game when Tom Nook receives a phone call during the morning Island Broadcast.
If youve made it far enough and saw the phone call interrupt the Island Broadcast, then head over to Resident Services and speak to Tom Nook. Hell inform you about how three interested parties, meaning villagers, have called him about wanting to join your deserted island.
These interested parties will include any villagers youve discovered and invited to your island on Island Tours with the Nook Miles Ticket, but you dont have to have invited anyone yourself to prompt the conversation with Tom Nook.
Keep speaking to Tom Nook until he eventually offers you the ability to craft a Bridge Construction Kit. Once available on your NookPhone, gather the following supplies below to craft the bridge construction kit and place it on a river of your choice.
How to Craft the Bridge Construction Kit
- 4 Log Skates

How To Cross A River Using A Vaulting Pole In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
When you first arrive on your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’ll find your exploration cut short by the fact that you’re unable to cross any of the rivers. If you want to fully explore your island, you’ll need to craft a Vaulting Pole.
You can do this as soon as the second day, by donating five different insect or fish species to Tom Nook within resident services.
Once Blathers has arrived in his makeshift museum – this will happen the next day – pay a visit and he will give you the DIY recipe for the Vaulting Pole.
To craft it, you need:
- 5x Softwood
To use the Vaulting Pole, select it from your inventory and then press A at the edge of the river, springing you across.
Remember it will only work on a ‘standard’ river width – so if the pole doesn’t work, it’s possible you are at a wider section, so head further along to give it a go.

How To Get The Vaulting Pole To Cross Rivers
Once everything is all set with your tent in Animal Crossing, players are pretty much given free rein to do anything and everything on the peaceful resort.
In true Animal Crossing fashion, the first thing many players will do is catch fish or bugs, since the island is absolutely covered with these types of critters.
At first, the island doesnt have a museum to display the creatures you catch, so youll have to instead take them to Tom Nook. Once you give him five fish or bugs, hell contact Blathers and give you the option to place a spot for his museum down on the island.
Once you do this, youll have to wait a day for Blathers to actually show up, but when he does, youre in business.
All youll have to do is head over to his tent, talk to him, and hell talk a bit about how he thinks fossils are found on the other side of the river. Of course, you cant actually get over there just yet, but he has a remedy for that.
He will give you the vaulting pole, which is then used to reach areas that were unreachable in the past.
Once you get your hands on this pole, things really start to open up in the world of Animal Crossing and you really start to see what the game can offer.

Give Five Fish Or Bugs To Tom Nook
Once you’ve got into your first full day on the island, Tom Nook will ask you to go and see him at the Residents’ Services tent, where he’ll offer to run you through the DIY workshop. It’s then that you’ll get the recipes for a flimsy net and flimsy fishing rod. Once you’ve crafted them, he’ll tell you that he’d “love to see anything you catch. I’m quite curious about the local fauna.” Now, this isn’t just a throwaway comment, so make sure to bring him five fish or bugs as soon as you can.
After you’ve done this, he’ll get a call from a friend, who just happens to be Blathers, who has curated the Animal Crossing museums since the original games. Now he’s looking to open a museum on your island.

How To Get A Vaulting Pole
When you first found your island, you may be in a rush to explore the entire landmass. Sadly, you arent allowed to do so just yet.
First off, talk to Tom Nook. Hell give you a DIY crafting lesson which includes the recipes for the net and fishing rod. You should then use these to catch five bugs or fish and bring them back to him. Afterward hell get a call from Blathers.
It turns out Blathers wants to come to the island and its up to you to place their tent. Be forewarned, however, that this isnt a normal tent. This will eventually become the islands museum.
Now you wait until the next morning when Blathers arrives on the island.
Once he does you can talk to him about opening a proper museum. Hell ask you to collect fish, bugs, and fossils, but gives you the Vaulting Pole recipe so you can explore more of the island.
To craft it you just need five Softwood which you get but hitting trees with an axe or completely cutting them down, but hey, be friendly toward your island. To get that, just visit Timmy inside Nooks tent. Hell sell you one for 800 bells or you can go ahead and grab the DIY recipe for one. Thatll only set you back around 250 bells, but you will need to gather stone and wood for it. And sure enough, its hard to gather wood without an axe to get said wood.
Once you have all of that, head back to Nooks crafting table and voila, your very own Vaulting Pole!
