Inventory In Animal Crossing: New Horizons Explained
In New Horizons, your inventory is referred to as your pockets, which you can access by pressing X. It’s within these pockets that you’ll hold all the materials, bugs, fish, flowers, clothing and other items you collect while playing.
When you first begin playing New Horizons, you’ll only be able to hold 20 items in your pockets. As you continue, however, you’ll be able to expand your inventory first to 30 and later to 40.
You purchase these inventory upgrades using Nook Miles and, in total, you’ll need 13,000 Nook Miles to purchase both expansions. Though you do have to unlock the ability to purchase them first.

- Increase home storage by exchanging Bells for home upgrades.
- Max pocket inventory space is 40.
- Max home storage space is 1,600.
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, there are two forms of inventory: the items you carry with you, and the items you store for later in your home. At first, youre limited to how many items you can store each way. Thankfully, inventory space can be increased for both. First, youre going to want to expand the inventory space of the items you carry around with you.
You can view your inventory at any time by pressing X. To increase your inventory space, youll need to pay off your island getaway fee of 5,000 Nook Miles. After that, youll need to rack up an additional 5,000 Nook Miles to spend on the Pocket Organization Guide. To purchase this, head to the Resident Services Center and interact with the Nook Stop Terminal.
From there, redeem your Nook Miles and select the Pocket Organization Guide. In doing so, your inventory space will increase by 10. We recommend doing this immediately as itll help you gather more resources and items to sell for Bells. You can expand your inventory space again later after youve invited three new Villagers to live with you on your island.
Again, the storage space is limited but can be increased gradually as you pay off your home loans and expand your house. Below, weve listed the total storage space for each home upgrade level.

How To Get The House Storage Upgrade In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Much like every other type of upgrade, players will need to seek out Tom Nook. Assuming this is after the town has developed a bit, he’ll be in the town hall. One of the first things a player needs before they can achieve this upgrade is to have gotten and paid off all other upgrades to the player’s home. This includes expanding the first floor, having all the additional rooms on the first floor, getting a second floor, and a basement.
Nearly all of these renovations will cost over 100,000 bells, so players will need to go through quite a bit of grinding. The secondary thing to remember is that it always takes one day before an upgrade will go through. This means that even with quite a bit of grinding, it will likely take a couple of days if the player hasn’t gotten all of their house upgrades.
Once all of that is done, players can head to see Tom Nook at the town hall as usual. Ask him about the player’s home and ask for the final upgrade to the house storage. This will cost a hefty sum of 500,000 bells, but don’t feel pressured to pay off this in a hurry. Players will still receive the upgrade before payment, a day after the request.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is exclusively available on the Nintendo Switch.

How To Increase Home Storage Limit
Starting on Thursday, November 19th with the release of the newest update to Animal Crossing: New Horizons players will have the option to upgrade their home storage limit one additional time beyond the previous maximum. Players still need to fully upgrade their house and then pay off their final loan in full. This normally left you with 1600 item storage inside your home, letting you squirrel away anything you might want to access later. That hasnt been enough for a lot of players though, including myself. So make sure you finish up these two objectives of fully upgrading your house and paying off the loan.
Once that is complete a new option will open up. Head over to Resident Services and speak with Tom Nook. Tell him youd like to talk about your home and you will have the option to Expand my storage. Selecting this will bump you from the previous limit of 1600 to the new max of 2400. Those 800 additional items will definitely come in handy as more events and holidays provide items you wont want to lose access to.
Hopefully this helps you understand how to increase home storage limit in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
