How To Find And Download Custom Paths In Animal Crossing
There are multiple ways of grabbing custom path designs. The players can design their own custom paths for other players to employ or can download the designs using QR codes.
Moreover, players can also insert numerical codes at the terminal present at the back of Able Sisters’ store.
If the chosen design uses a QR code, Animal Crossing players will have to download the Nintendo Switch Online app which is available for iOS and Android. This will redirect you to the Custom Designs app on your Nook Phone from where you will be able to download it.
Now, all that’s left to do is to place your custom path wherever you want. There is one catch though. Unlike the default designs, this one works differently. Players will have to be careful not to press Y while standing next to their custom design on the floor as the character will kick the pattern with their foot, erasing all the progress you have made.

While weve already covered some ideas for your island and home, we will be highlighting a bunch of terrific custom paths made by community members. Keep in mind, there are hundreds upon hundreds of creations made by the community so if youre looking for something specific theres a chance its out there. How To Make Paths
In order to begin making paths in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players will need the Island Designer app unlocked. Unlocking the app is really the hard part because the player will need to have had K.K Slider perform at their island first. Since K.K Slider’s performance requires an island rating of three stars, for most players the Island Designer app will likely remain locked for a little while.
Once the Island Designer app is unlocked, creating paths is pretty simple. The player only needs to open the app and choose “build paths”, which will open a window with path options. Once the player chooses the path that they’d like, they will begin placing it. It is worth noting that not all of the in-game path designs will be available initially, so players will have to unlock some. However, since the ability to use custom designs as paths has returned, players can feel free to go that route instead.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

How To Terraform Using Island Designer
Before you really get going with Island Designer, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with all the tools. The app itself includes a manual that will walk you through the basics each tool is operated with A, and you can use the + button to switch between permits and path types. We outline specific use cases and our best tips below.
How To Make Paths In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The Animal Crossing series is all about giving the player freedom to create, build, and design however they’d like. However, Animal Crossing: New Horizons makes that customization a little more streamlined through the new tools it has added. One of the biggest quality of life changes is the introduction of the Island Designer app, which allows the player to terraform their island. Skilled designers have recreated iconic locations such as Pokemon’s Pallet Town with the tool, but the average player might find more value in simply sprucing their village up with a few paths.
Maintaining one’s town is a major part of the Animal Crossing franchise, so it makes sense that Nintendo would simplify the process. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, players would need to download a QR code and use the pattern as a path. Because of this, the paths were treated as custom floor designs that would often be accidentally removed because the player could simply wipe them away. With the ability to terraform the player’s island using the Island Designer app, fans are now able to have actual, permanent pathways throughout their islands.

How To Use Terraforming To Build Or Remove Rivers And Cliffs
Once you’ve unlocked the Island Designer App it’s not just about laying down a bit of paving and patios – you can also completely reshape your island using the terraforming tools. These terraforming tools can be used to adjust almost every factor of your island: you can add and remove rivers and cliffs, meaning you can reduce your island to an entirely flat plain and remodel from there if you so desire.
The only bits of your island you can’t remove are the beaches and the rocks surrounding them, and you of course can’t touch or move the airport or residential services area and surrounding town square.
In order to get the terraforming tools for creating or removing rivers and cliffs, just head to the Nook Terminal in residential services. Once again, this terminal is selling access to the tools you need: the water-scaping tool for creating rivers and the cliff-scaping tools for creating raised areas of land. Equipping the tools works the same way as with paths. You’ll take out a little shovel and can then use this to reshape your island significantly.

How To Get Terraforming: Unlocking The Island Designer App
Island Designer is a later-game feature, so there are a few steps you’ll need to take over at least two weeks of playtime in order to unlock it. You need to have unlocked the Resident Services building and begun Tom Nook’s Project K assignment, which requires you to:
- Invite the first camper to live on your island
- Build three housing plots
- Get three villagers to move into those houses
- Get your island to a three-star rating
Project K will take quite a few days to complete, plus the time and effort it takes to decorate your island and improve your rating. Luckily, as long as you plant flowers and trees and put some furniture here and there, you should be able to get to three stars pretty easily once you’ve improved your population numbers.
The day after you’ve reached three stars, Tom Nook will give you the Island Designer app on your NookPhone. At first, you’ll only have access to the path tool and two types of paths , but you can unlock more path options, the waterscaping tool, and the cliff construction tool with Nook Miles.
But New Horizons Has Real Frustrations
With New Horizons, Nintendo addressed hurdles that prevented some people from getting into Animal Crossing. And while a list of achievements like Nook Miles demystifies the game, Im willing to trade some of the illusion to get a more rewarding game overall.
My deeper frustrations with New Horizons dont stem from a comparison to New Leaf. Im still more hung up on the interface and multiplayer.
Before I get into this, Ill admit that I just spent a lot of words critically examining Nintendos decisions to streamline and modernize Animal Crossings mechanics. Now, Im going to beg the company to streamline and modernize its user experience. But Ill gladly declare myself a hypocrite to not have to go through four button presses and an animation to build one DIY recipe.
I get that Nintendo wants to make Animal Crossing feel conversational, and it should maintain that when it comes to the villagers and maybe even the shopkeepers and Tom Nook. But I dont want to have a conversation with my workbench or the airline.
Let me queue up recipes in my workbench and hook the bench into my homes storage. When I want to go online, I get that Nintendo wants me to go the airport. But then just give me all of the options in a single menu. Its baffling that if I choose the wrong option, I cant just go back one menu. I instead have to start the conversation over from the beginning.
