Guideby Jake Green, Guides Editor

When starting out on your new deserted island in Animal Crossing New Horizons you’ll notice that some areas are blocked off by rivers. You’ll need to craft a vaulting pole to cross them, which you won’t be able to do until a certain point in the game. We’ll explain everything in this guide.

The Vaulting Pole Item In Animal Crossing New Horizons

In order to unlock the Vaulting Pole item, the player must first bring along Blathers on to their tropical island. Blathers is in charge of the Museum on the island, a location where the player can display the bugs and fish they collect while on the island. Blathers will provide the player with the Vaulting Pole item and the Shovel so they can go around and collect more bugs and fish to put on display on the planned museum opening. To bring Blathers onto the island, the player must go around the island and collect fish and bug and return them to Tom Nook. Tom Nook will then send every specimen the player provides to him to Blathers. One important thing to mention is the specimens given to Tom Nook must be unique bugs or fish. Providing Tom Nook with the same fish or bug will not trigger this event.

Animal Crossing New Horizons;is available now on the Nintendo Switch.

Unlocking The Vaulting Pole

The vaulting pole is the easiest and quickest of the two to unlock. It’s a simple to craft DIY recipe that you’ll get by talking to Blathers after he comes to your island. The vaulting pole requires;five softwood to craft and does not break.

Blathers will arrive after Tom Nook has received some bugs or fish from you,;five in total. He asks for these shortly after the initial DIY quest. You also need to ensure you’ve set Blather’s pitch in a suitable location.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has loads of lovely rivers in it, but there’s one big problem because there are no bridges, you can’t cross them without the proper gear.

That gear is the Vaulting Pole, which is an item you’ll want to get your grubby hands on as soon as possible.

As with the main tools including the axe, shovel and ladder, the Vaulting Pole is an item you have to create yourself using the game’s crafting system, and here’s how you do it.

Catch 5 Unique Fish Or Bugs And Donate Them To Tom Nook

Before anything, make sure that you’ve gone through the game’s tutorial, gotten your NookPhone from Tom Nook, and have taken his DIY workshop. If you still haven’t taken Tom Nook’s workshop and don’t have a fishing rod, follow our “Animal Crossing” first hour guide until you get one.

Head outside with your fishing rod and bug net and start hunting. You’ll want to catch five unique species this can be five bugs, five fish, or a mix of both.

At this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, you’ll be able to easily find three different types of butterflies in your starting area. Some shells on the beach will hide hermit crabs, which you can catch with your net as well.

Between your ocean and rivers, there are over 20 different types of fish available to you right from the start. Catching multiple fish in succession without scaring any away might even earn you bonus Nook Miles.

Once you’ve caught five, head to Tom Nook and talk to him. You’ll find that a new option has appeared: “I found a creature!”

Keep giving your critters to Tom, and when he asks you if he can send them to his “old friend,” accept.

As soon as you give him your fifth catch, he’ll receive a call from this friend: Blathers, a famed museum curator, is coming to town, and needs somewhere to stay. Tom Nook will give you a new tent to set up, which you should then place down anywhere on your island.

How To Unlock The Fishing Rod And Bug Net

After you complete the tutorial day on the island and start your first real day, get the Nook Phone and then speak to Tom Nook in the Resident Services tent.

When Tom Nook offers a DIY Workshop, accept his offer, and then bring him 5 Wooden Branches. You can then use the workshop to craft a Flimsy Fishing Rod, which can be used along the edge of rivers, ponds, and beaches to catch fish after a fish has dragged the lure under the water. The flimsy version only lasts for about 10 catches, so be prepared to make more.

Tom Nook will also give you the recipe for the Flimsy Net, which can be used to catch a variety of insects and other floating objects – and even annoy the heck out of villagers but you probably shouldnt do that.

Animal Crossing New Horizons introduces a new vaulting pole item that allows players to cross bodies of water. This guide will help players unlock it.

The Vaulting Pole item is important to Animal Crossing New Horizons as it can save plenty of time for traversing the island. Also, depending on how the player decides to layout their island via terraforming, some parts of the islands can be only unlocked when achieving the Vaulting Pole item. This means resources, weeds, and potentially new territory to craft and create homes in is completely locked behind this item. Usually, in order to cross rivers, the player would need to create bridges in previous entries. While this is possible, the Vaulting Pole just makes it easier to get the job done and saves tons of time and resources. Using the Vaulting Pole item, players can quickly cross rivers with minimal ease. The item is alongside the other tools and can be created by using the DIY recipes in the game. This guide will help players receive the DIY recipe for Vaulting Pole.

How To Get The Vaulting Pole To Cross Rivers

In order to cross the rivers on your deserted island and explore the other side, youll need to get your hands on the important Vaulting Pole tool item.

Unlocking the Vaulting Pole requires you to first make it to at least your second full day on the island with Blatherss Tent fully built and open ready to accept donations. In order to build Blatherss Tent, you first need to donate five bugs or fish to Tom Nook at Resident service and place the location for Blatherss Tent.

After placing the location for Blatherss Tent, the construction will be completed the next morning. When the day begins, head over inside of his tent to speak with Blathers and he will discuss with you his interest in finding fossils on the island.

In order to get to the fossils on the island though, youll need to be able to cross the river to find the dig spots, which of course requires the Vaulting Pole tool! Therefore Blathers will transfer both the Vaulting Pole crafting recipe and the Flimsy Shovel crafting recipe to your NookPhone.

How to Craft the Vaulting Pole

Youll need to gather five Softwood crafting materials to craft the Vaulting Pole tool item. Those can be gathered by hitting a tree with either the Flimsy Axe or Stone Axe, but only once per day. If you dont find enough Softwood from one tree, try another as the type of wood that drops is random.
