Pumpkin starts can produce four colors — orange, white, green and yellow — in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Seedlings only take up one square each, like flowers or shrubs, and the first time they are planted, they take about four days to bear fruit. After that, pumpkins will appear every two days.
Pumpkins cannot cross-pollinate, but players should still take time to water them each day. If pumpkins are left to grow on their own without watering, each plant will produce one pumpkin when it bears fruit. However, pumpkins watered daily will produce two pumpkins per plant. Having multiple people water the same pumpkin patch doesn’t affect output. Finally, watering pumpkins with a gold watering can will produce a whopping three pumpkins per plant — so to get the most bountiful harvest, be sure to water daily with that highly-coveted tool.

There are four types of pumpkins available in the game right now. You can grow orange, yellow, white, and green pumpkins, and each color unlocks different DIY recipes. Plant your pumpkins in the ground by pressing on the item and hitting the Plant 1 option. The color of the pumpkin is random but weighted more towards being orange. If you want to grow a specific pumpkin color, bury a pumpkin of the color you want to grow. The resulting pumpkin will be the same color as the one you buried.
Pumpkins grow in a four-day cycle. Day one consists of creating a small pumpkin sprout. On day two, the pumpkin grows into a medium pumpkin sprout. It grows into a large pumpkin sprout on day three. Finally, a full ripe pumpkin comes out on the fourth day. The amount of pumpkins you can harvest depends on your watering habits.
Make sure to water your pumpkins three times a day. Watering them allows you to harvest more pumpkins, so dont forget this step. Not watering the pumpkin sprouts will result in a single pumpkin harvest. Watering one time in the life cycle results in a double pumpkin, and watering them all three days produces three pumpkins.

Four Types Of Pumpkins
In particular, Pumpkins have four different color types that they can grown in: Orange, Yellow, White, and Green.
However, theres still only a single type of Pumpkin Start available to buy and plant. Thats because a random color of the four types will grow when you plant a Pumpkin Start.
The Orange Pumpkin is by far the most common being produced more than half the time, with the other three colors being somewhat rare in comparison. Given that the Spooky Set items are all crafted initially using Orange Pumpkins, that makes a lot of sense.
But youll still need the other three colors of Yellow, White, and Green to customize your Spooky Set items. One great way to help grow more of a particular color you want is to plant one of the pumpkins youve harvested using a Shovel that matches the color youd like to grow.
Then when that new plant is fully grown, it will begin harvesting the same color as was planted, helping you obtain as many as you want of the color you desire! Itll just keep re-growing repeatedly to produce even more.
Where To Purchase Pumpkin Starts
Pumpkin starts can be purchased at Nook’s Cranny or from Leif, the traveling plant vendor. Unlike shrubs or flowers, it’s impossible to tell what color a pumpkin will be until it actually produces fruit. Therefore, buying in bulk is recommended, since there’s only one pumpkin start type, but they can produce four pumpkin colors.
The main difference between buying pumpkin starts from Nook’s Cranny and buying from Leif is the price. A single pumpkin start goes for 280 Bells at Nook’s Cranny, whereas Leif charges half that at 140 Bells per pumpkin start. Either option is affordable, but if Leif is visiting, it definitely makes more sense to purchase from him. It’s also important to note that pumpkin starts can only be purchased in October. Once planted, they will grow in other months, but players won’t be able to acquire new seedlings.
