Give Gifts To Villagers
Generosity goes a long way. Once a villager is on your island for at least a week with frequent communication, you can begin giving them daily gifts and helping them with tasks as needed. More often than not, they’ll give you something in return, sometimes in the form of bells. Otherwise you can collect and sell the items that they give you.
Of course, they won’t give you a huge amount of bells, but all those little amounts will add up.
Greedy Gardening: Plant A Money Tree
Im sure by now youve noticed a glowing patch of grass somewhere else on your island every day. Dig it up, and you get 1,000 bells. It may not sound like much pocket money, but take another look. That patch is still glowing when you extract the cash, right? Well, toss a bag of cash back in there, and youll sprout a money tree in five or six days with sacks of bells hanging from it like fruit.
These wont regrow like fruit, and youll only get 3,000 bells per day if you throw back in what you get. But play it smart. Instead of that chump change, dump a sack of 10,000 bells in the hole, and youll boost the payout to 30,000 per tree. Make it a daily chore, and youll gain a net 140,000 bells per week.
However, players have been trying a new trick that seems to be working out. Although most players wont try it, some gamblers will bury 99,000 bells in a hole. For a long time, players thought this risk wasnt worth it. But if you wait until a day when, during the morning announcements, Isabelle mentions that her astrology said she will be lucky, then its time to bury 99,000 bells. Its the only way youll be able to yield 297,000 bells from the money tree.
What Animal Crossing: New Horizons Can Learn From Stardew Valley And New Leaf
Animal Crossing: New Horizons released in March 2020 and has since sold over 32 million copies, becoming the second best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch. As a long-time fan of the series, I was one of the masses frothing at the mouth as midnight hit on Mar. 20, 2020. The game was exactly what the world needed at the time.
However, over a year later, it’s sitting in many of our Switches way down the queue. Sure, new games have largely taken its place, but Animal Crossing has always been a go-to game for some wind-down time. Instead, many of us have picked up other games, like Stardew Valley.
Granted, sim games can run their course after some time, but the whole purpose of these games is to keep you engaged, or at the very least, have you hop in for a few minutes a day. One game we returned to frequently for years, way longer than I’ve ever played New Horizons, was its predecessor, Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Even now, we’re considering digging up my 3DS and starting another journey as mayor.
All of this game jumping has me wondering what New Horizons could do to bring players back and remain one of the best games on the Nintendo Switch. So, what exactly are the issues here, and where can New Horizons go? In our opinion, it should look to other sim titles for inspiration.

Enact The Bell Boom Ordinance
The best way to boost your Bell count is by enacting the Bell Bloom Ordinance. After getting your approval rating to 100% and unlock the development permit, you’ll be able to do this.
Talk to Isabelle at your desk in Town Hall. Under the Ordinances menu, choose “A rich town.” This will boost the selling price of all items at the Re-Tail Shop. Enacting this ordinance costs 20,000 Bells, but you’ll make more money in the long run.
Exchange A Bell Voucher For 3000 Bells
At a certain point in the game youll be able to redeem Bell Vouchers from the Nook Stop inside Resident Services by using Nook Miles. Bell Vouchers cost 500 Nook Miles and can be exchanged at Nooks Cranny for 3,000 Bells.
Theres no limit to the amount of Bell Vouchers you can purchase in one day and youll receive the ticket immediately. This is a great option for later in the game when you need a quick lump sum of cash.

Your Town Layout Isn’t That Important
When starting the game, you’ll be asked to pick your town layout from some mapped options. The thing is, this layout doesn’t have a huge affect on your experience. They all have the standard beaches, rivers, and trees.
On the other hand, having the bridge located more towards the center of your town could prove to be useful as it’s easier to reach things without having to traverse through your entire town, with butterflies being the prime example. Ultimately, just pick a layout that looks interesting to you. What you do in town is more important than how it’s designed.
Want Cool Nintendo Kitsch Buy Fortune Cookies With Play Coins
If you need some added incentive to take your Nintendo 3DS out for a walk, keep in mind that the Nooklings sell fortune cookies for two Play Coins each. Most of the fortunes inside these treats can be exchanged for Nintendo-related clothes and items. Occasionally, your ticket wont be a winner, but dont despair: Tommy or Timmy will give you a consolation prize. Who needs a Master Sword when you can have an ironing board?

Money Does Grow On Trees
As does furniture, apparently. It may be a bit time consuming, but every day it’s worth going on a tour of your town shaking each and every single tree ,as often, a bag of 100 Bell coins will magically float to the ground. Each day, you’ll be able to get a total of 2,000 Bells from your trees, as well as two pieces of furniture which you can then flog to Re-Tail, the second hand shop, for more money. Occasionally, your tree shakes may also make a spider or bagworm drop down, which you can catch in your net and sell on for 300 Bells each.
Shaking trees is not without it’s perils though, as some have beehives hiding in their branches and disturbing them will send a swarm of angry bees flying after you. If you don’t duck into a building in time, the bees will chase you down and sting you, leaving you with a swollen eye that doesn’t really do much except alarm your townsfolk when you first chat to them. Quickly pressing the start button and choosing ‘Save and continue’ will also miraculously scare off the angry bees too, avoiding the swollen face to boot. Another way to tackle the bee problem is to leg it a fair distance away, pull out your net and swipe at the swarm to nab yourself a bee – the timing is a bit difficult, but it’s well worth trying as Reese will buy bees for a whopping 2,500 Bells a pop. Don’t forget to pocket the beehives they leave behind too, as they go for 500 Bells as well.
Sell Materials From Mystery Island Tours
Mystery Island Tours are procedurally generated trips to faraway islands that cost 2,000 Nook Miles to visit. From there, you can continue to do most of what you do on your own island but theres a chance of the island spawning unique fruit and materials. You can harvest pears and bamboo, for example, which can be sold back at your respective island home for a heftier price than your native fruit would. Plus, planting these fruits on your island will result in fruit trees in a few days time, so you can harvest from a bigger variety every day without spending the extra Nook Miles.
Additionally, if you bring your native islands fruit to a friends island via online play, you can sell your fruit for a better price. If your friends are generous, they may let you grab different fruit from their island too.

How To Catalog Items & Increase Catalog Size
The good news is, once youve unlocked the catalog option, adding items to it is incredibly simple.
All you need to do is put an item in your pockets and itll automatically be added to the catalog. You can then reorder it and itll arrive in your mailbox the next day.
A great way of quickly boosting the amount of furniture and items you can order from your catalog is to get a group of friends together and have everyone bring a random assortment of their favorite furniture.
Once youve all arrived on one island, drop all of your items on the floor. Now, one by one, each go around picking up and dropping the items that everyone brought.
In doing so, youll quickly be adding the items to your catalog so that you can order them yourself, without anyone having to sacrifice their favorite items.
Thats everything you need to know on how to catalog in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Our wiki has plenty more tips, tricks, and guides for your perusal, or you can search Twinfinite and check out more of our coverage below.

Issue : It’s Missing Some Sort Of Story
The one unanimous point that the iMore staff agreed upon regarding issues in New Horizons was that it lacked a story. It’s one of the main reasons plenty of us just stopped playing. There just isn’t one! You arrive on an island, you fix it, you terraform it, and then you pay Tom Nook back. That’s the end! Sure, it’s fun finding all of the possible villagers, but it’s impossible to build a story around them. Plus, what happens once you have them? Do you keep them prisoner or let them leave?
If there is any extra information about NPCs, it doesn’t have much of an impact. Even the picture quest seems to fall flat since it’s pretty much based on how many times you talk to them and give them gifts. Everything about this trip to a deserted island just seems hollow.
How others do it
Both Stardew Valley and Cozy Grove have a similar structure to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but the big difference is that it’s not just about building a tropical island. The other games actually have a story, and having a narrative is a great way to keep players engaged. Even if the gameplay is the same, the story is what will bring players back. In Stardew Valley, it’s even possible to marry townspeople and have a family, and that’s just one possibility.
How it can be fixed
Play The Stalk Market
Animal Crossing has a stalk market thats based around turnips. Every Sunday morning, you can buy turnips from a boar named Joan. Then, throughout the week you can talk to Reese and Re-Tail and find out what your turnips are selling for. The price changes twice daily: once when Re-Tail opens for the day, and again at noon.
You must sell your turnips by the next Sunday morning, or else theyll spoil. “Buy low, sell high” is the best strategy, but that can be harder than it sounds. You can find numerous Animal Crossing stalk market guides online to help you cash in.

Focus On Selling Nook’s Hot Item Of The Day
Be sure to prioritize obtaining;Nook’s Cranny, which is the game’s dedicated shop, first and foremost. This is triggered upon completing Timmy and Tom’s request to gather 30 pieces of the following – wood, softwood, hardwood, and iron nuggets. It might seem a bit tedious, but the payoff is quite worth it. The dedicated shop will open, at which point the “hot item of the day” will be opened up to you.
Now, you’ll be able to pawn a randomly-chosen crafted item which will bring in;twice;the Bells it normally sells for.;So get a jump on;what the item in question is and get to work having one ready to sell during the day.
Sell Turnips At High Prices
The Stalk Market has been a mainstay in the Animal Crossing franchise since the beginning. Daisy Mae visits islands every Sunday morning until 12 p.m. with a fresh crop of turnips, which she sells at prices ranging from 90 to 110 bells per turnip. Players then have one week to sell their turnips to Timmy and Tommy, who can offer prices from 15 bells to 650 bells. The price changes twice a day. It’s a bit of a gamble, because you never know if or when you will get a decent price.
Thankfully, there are tools on the Internet to help track and predict daily turnip prices. In addition, you can check out sites like Turnip Exchange to find islands with high prices. Fill your pockets with turnips and reap the rewards.

Early Bird Gets The Worm: When And Where To Hunt Fish And Bugs
You wont know what youre fishing for until you reel it in. Its probably a black/sea bass, but it could be something bigger. Something better. But if youre out fishing in the hopes of reeling in something big, dont be discouraged by a swarm of bass filling your inventory. Even if a fish or bug isnt worth a fortune to the Nook twins, that doesnt mean you should just throw them back to nature. Small sales will add up over time.
If youre not having much luck finding valuable critters, you may want to change up when you do your daily hunt. Depending on the date, you may find better fish or bugs during a particular time slot. Our monthly fishing guide indicates which fish will only be found in the mornings or evenings, and you can strategize accordingly. For example, some of the most valuable fall fish snapping turtles, koi, golden trout, and barreleye can only be found after 4 p.m. or 9 p.m. during the fall in the northern hemisphere.
Also, you may want to take the time to dig up manila clams, which are buried in the beach and give away their location by squirting out water. You can craft them into fish bait, then stay in one place and bait in one fish after another. Rare fish often appear near the pier, in the river mouth that runs into the ocean, or on the clifftops, but it can be irksome running back and forth from them, waiting for a fish shadow. So bait in some rare gems all at once instead!
