Guideby Jake Green, Guides Editor
Animal Crossing New Horizons lets you build up your very own village on a desert island. There’s a lot of space to take advantage of, though at first you’ll be blocked by rocks that will need to be removed. In this guide we’ll teach you how to break rocks in Animal Crossing New Horizons. Let’s get started.

Invite New Villagers To Your Island
There are hundreds of potential villagers — all with their own personalities and unique designs — who can move to your island, but your little swatch of land can only accommodate 9 at a time. As you build on the barren island of the beginning of the game, hand-picking your cohabitants adds richness to your personal utopia.
To attract the first three townspeople, just buy Nook Miles Tickets to other islands from the Nook Stop machine in Resident Services. The first three islands you visit will feature a character excited to join your community. But once you’ve welcomed the first three newbies, Tom Nook will ask you to build a campsite, where tourists will stay for one day at a time. Invite campers, and they’ll also move to your island.
As a bonus, you can buy collectible;Amiibo figurines or cards;of your favorite Nintendo characters online, and they allow you to invite unique villagers with special attributes to your island. As those who have used Amiibo in other Nintendo games know, they’re not essential for the core game, but they add small elements to further personalize your experience, and sometimes even cross over characters between Nintendo properties.
Finally, befriend those villagers by talking to them every day, giving them gifts and sending them cards in the mail . Not only do you earn Nook Miles by befriending villagers, but your new friends will also begin to give you more gifts, like clothes and medicine.
What Do You Get For Breaking Rocks
When you break a rock, you’ll get one of a few items. These range from Bells to Stone , it’s random so you never really know what you’re going to get. You’ll also clear some space where the rock was, which allows you to build structures there. If you need help with any other areas of the game, head to our walkthrough hub.

How To Break Rocks
To break rocks in Animal Crossing New Horizons you will need two things: a stone axe and fruit. The fruit can be whatever grows on your island. Once you have these two items, do the following:
Catch All The Fish And Bugs
Another early tip: Catch every animal you see — which pretty much consists of fish and bugs. Keep an eye on flowers for stinkbugs and mantises, snag butterflies in the groves, and shake trees and rocks to find pill bugs and spiders. Here’s how my colleague caught the elusive stringfish. As soon as you craft your first bug net and fishing pole, start handing over your collected critters to Tom Nook. Sure, you could sell these creatures to Timmy and Tommy, the island’s resident traders, but Tom Nook will send each unique discovery to his friend Blathers the owl, who lives off-island.
Long story short, after enough donations, Blathers the owl will come build a museum on the island and set you on to a much larger collection project, opening up the game considerably.;

How To Move Rocks In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Rocks are an asset in New Horizons, as you can pummel them with your shovel or axe to make useful items fall out, such as iron nuggets. If a rock isn’t in your way at the moment, there’s no reason to get rid of it when you could be farming it for useful crafting materials instead.
If your ambitions involve the patch of ground that rock is occupying, however, it’s time to get your hands dirty. Unfortunately, rocks aren’t quite as manipulable as trees are in New Horizons; you can’t simply dig them up and drop them somewhere else. Your only option for dealing with an inconvenient rock is pure destruction.
Most players will just sell their Fruit, but you can also eat it. This provides you with a long-lasting buff that stacks up in the upper-left corner of the screen and doesn’t immediately seem to do anything. However, each stack of Fruit power, up to 10, represents one extra-power swing you can make with your tools. With Fruit in your system, you can dig up trees, which will be placed in your inventory for later replanting, or shatter rocks completely with one hit from your axe or shovel. If you end up with extra stacks of the Fruit buff and nothing useful to do with them, you can get rid of them by making a quick restroom visit.

How To Get 8 Things From Rocks In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
First up, notice that the entire island has a grid system layout and each rock is surrounded by 8 squares. These squares must be empty so that the goodies coming out of the rock have a place to land. So, follow the steps below:
- Rid the spaces around the rocks of any weeds or other items
- Head to one of the corner spaces surrounding the rock – we’ve head to the north-eastern space in the pic below. From here use a shovel to dig a hole to the top and to the right of your current position. Feel free to dig additional holes and really ‘block yourself in’, but once you’ve done it a few times you’ll only need two.
- Now face the rock and start hammering the ‘A’ button. You’ll strike the rock multiple times and it will continue pinging out goodies to a maximum of eight.
- Now vacuum up all the resources by pressing ‘Y’ and and fill those holes back in. Alternatively, leave them there and they’ll be refilled magically overnight.
And that’s it! This trick is especially valuable for extracting the maximum number of Bells from the ‘money rock’ which will manifest in a different rock each day. Using this trick you can guarantee a total of 13,000 Bells every day just by bashing an old rock. Lovely!
Of course, judicious planting of trees and placement of items around rocks means you can avoid the time-intensive method of digging altogether and get straight to harvesting resources from rocks.

Animal Crossing Etiquette Guide: The Dos And Donts Of Online Multiplayer
With many of us observing social distancing and stay-at-home orders in place around the world, Animal Crossing: New Horizons provides a virtual getaway with friends. Visiting a friends island allows you to hang out without leaving your home. But just as in the real world, its important to mind your manners if youre hosting or visiting friends.
Building an island village is a lot of work, after all, with some players pouring hours upon hours into customizing their towns. While visiting, your actions can have lasting ramifications. If youre new to Animal Crossing, or if you havent checked out its online portion in earlier games, here are some helpful guidelines to consider for respectfully playing online.
Keep in mind that these are suggestions. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a game with immense flexibility, and no one should tell you how to play. But respect and listening to others can go a long way.
Make All Remaining Custom Designs Invisible
In the process of disabling and making the Custom Design tiles we laid down transparent
You definitely won’t want to leave your entire island covered in Custom Designs, so as a final finishing touch we recommend going around and manually making every tile transparent! This way, you’ll be able to see your ground as it normally is.
Careful When Spamming The Y Button
Note that making a custom design transparent does not mean the tile is a regular floor. When pressing the Y button while collecting items, you might accidentally remove the custom design tile, causing fossils and weeds to spawn there again.

How To Make A Rock Garden
Because rocks respawn one at a time each day in different locations, you can choose to make your rock garden so that you can get more rocks quickly. For you to make one, you will need the following items:
- A grid area of 7×5 or 7×9
- 6 fruits
- Shovel or stone axe
- Custom Designs app
First of all, you will need to set up a grid for your rock garden. So, you can either use a 7×5 grid area, or a 7×9 grid area. When you open up your map, youll see that the regions will become grids inside the map. You can only have a total of 4 rocks in any one region of the map. So, youll need to set your grid on the line which divides two regions. This will allow you to have 6 rocks instead.
Your space should be void of any hard paths. The following places or items are considered as hard paths: the edges of cliffs, rivers or ponds, pieces of wood, and any space beside trees, buildings or on the beach. This is because they prevent rocks from spawning.
When you have found a suitable spot, use the Custom Designer app to place a path tile where you want each rock. Eat the 6 fruits when you have completed the step above. After you have replenished your energy, go ahead and break all the 6 rocks on your island.
PS: Having a rock garden saves you the time you would have spent looking for where a rock has respawned.
Preparing Your Rock Garden
If you want your rocks to be scattered in an area, then just fence off a section of your island for them to spawn in. Alternatively, you can create a pattern or design, with each rock in a specific place.
To line your rocks up like pictured above, you will need to prepare the area.
Now, you should have a rock garden! Decorate the area and get rid of all those mannequins. Overall, the garden should be finished in a week if you rock-proofed your island correctly. If it takes a while because you missed some areas, it’s okay! Eventually, your rocks will be where you want them.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Among the many different ways to make lots of Bells in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, catching rare bugs is one of the most lucrative and rewarding. In addition to this, rare bugs are also incredibly important creatures for museum completionists to catch as they’re important for finishing exhibits. That being said, rare bugs are named that way for a reason. They’re difficult to come by, and often times they’re easy to scare off, too. Thankfully, we’re here to help improve your odds at finding and catching these elusive critters. Here’s our list of tips and tricks to help you catch rare bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Animal Crossing New Horizons: How To Get Gold Nuggets
Funding your island can be an expensive business in Animal Crossing New Horizons, even if money literally does grow on trees in the game. But gold is where the real dosh is it. Here were going to explain how to get gold nuggets in Animal Crossing New Horizons, the most lucrative resource in the entire game.
Place The Furniture On The Shore
Once you’ve got all the furniture necessary, place it all along the water’s edge! Remember, you need to cover up all tiles touching the water, so make sure to double check carefully when laying down furniture! If you drop an item and it doesn’t fall on the water’s edge, that means you’ve effectively covered up the right tile.

Pros To Flattening Your Island In Animal Crossing New Horizons
1. Keep Your Resources and Items
The first pro that comes to mind and perhaps the most obvious is that you get to keep all of your resources, it can also really be helpful for if you are redesigning your island because you’ll have the ACNH bells to move houses and create bridges and inclines. You also get to keep all of your nook miles, reactions and all items.
2.; Have Your Beloved Villagers
Another thing you might not even think about is that when you restart, you lose all of your stamps and they do keep track of like the day that you achieved whatever accomplishment it is, so it’s also admittedly nice to still have the villagers that you know and love especially. If you have formed close friendships with them it can be really hard to let them go even if you plan on having them on your new island after year you start, it can suck to say goodbye to them. If you flatten, you don’t have to say goodbye to these precious little babies.
3. Don’t Lose Your Layout or Your Builds
Something else that can be really helpful – if you flatten is that you don’t lose your layout or your build, so if you can’t stand decorating beaches, you don’t have to pick up everything off the beach if you don’t want to, you can just leave it there and boom your beaches are already done. So that’s a big pro and if you have things you like, you don’t have to get rid of that if you flatten
4. Terraforming Is Already Unlocked
Wood Sticks And Trees
Your island will no-doubt be replete with trees of varying style and colour, and you won’t be able to chop them down completely until later.
Once you’ve crafted your first flimsy axe out of some sticks and a rock, you can use it to hit the trees and make them drop three bits of wood – this can be softwood, hardwood and regular old wood – and each has its own uses in crafting.
You can hit each tree on your island three times to gather wood and then you won’t be able to do it again until the next day, so if you’re just starting out, use it sparingly.

How To Change Rivers And Cliffs In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The ability to change the course of rivers and move cliffs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is only granted to you later in the game. Once you’ve ‘fully decked out your island’ you’ll have the option to go and get construction permits from the Nook Miles Kiosk. You can find it in the Resident Services center, and once you’ve improved your island enough for K.K. Slider to come to town, you’ll receive the Island Designer app from Tom Nook. Here’s a quick rundown of how to get terraforming tools in Animal Crossing: New Horizons:
- Improve your island enough for K.K. Slider to visit.
- This requires you to get three out of five stars in island evaluations.
- To find out your current island evaluation, talk to Isabelle at Resident Services and choose “Island Evals.”
- As soon as you get three stars, K.K. Slider’s visit will be scheduled for the morning of the next day.
- After the concert, Tom Nook will give you the Island Designer app.
- To add the ability to change cliffs or rivers to the Island Designer app, buy the necessary permits from the Nook Miles kiosk.
- Cliff Construction Permits and Waterscaping Permits cost 6,000 Nook Miles each.
- Choose the Island Designer app on your phone and pick the type of terraforming you want to do.
