Pitching Your Tent And Exploring Your Island
After a short in-flight movie, you’ll land on your new island and be ushered to its plaza. Here is where you’ll meet your neighbors your island starts with two and Tom Nook, the island’s “fearless leader.”
As you walk to the plaza, pay attention to the flowers and sticks scattered in the grass. You won’t be able to pick them up yet, but they’ll soon become important.
Tom Nook will welcome you to the island before telling you to pick a spot to set up your tent. You can get a tent from either Timmy or Tommy.
Your tent will be your base of operations for a good while it’s where you’ll start the game when you turn it on and likely store your stuff so this is an important decision.
However, you’ll soon find that you don’t have much space to choose from. Your starting area is walled off by impassable rivers, meaning that at least half of your island is unavailable. With this in mind, pick a spot that’s close to the island plaza you’ll be spending a lot of time there, so you might as well make your journey short.
Remember that placing your tent over a tree or rock will destroy that resource. Rocks will reappear somewhere else on the island in a few days, and trees will disappear unless you replant them later. When setting your tent, you can “imagine” what it’ll look like before you make your decision, which is a great way to see what resources will be displaced.
Take Advantage Of Special Visitors
Within the first few days of your island adventure, you’ll likely come across a unique visitor — such as Gulliver, the sea gull asleep on the beach, or Wisp, the easily frightened ghost. Each of these visitors will teach you something, sell you something or send you on a short mission. These missions will earn you unique item rewards.
My personal favorite visitor so far is C.J., a beaver-blogger who loves to fish. He’ll ask you to catch special fish for him, order fish decorations for you , and pay you extra for any fish you sell him. In a single day with C.J., I ordered a handful of fish decorations to hang on my walls and made nearly 60,000 bells just angling as usual. It was a good day.
Invite A Few Villagers To Come And Stay On Your Island
The first thing that you need to do is go on adventures on Nook Miles Tickets. You will need to buy the tickets using the Nook Stop terminal which is in the Residents’ Services after paying the moving fees. You will get a temporary pass to fly out from your own island and discover an alternative deserted island which will be generated at random.

Once you get there, you will be able to collect some crafting materials, foreign fruits and a number of other items to take back to your island. More importantly, you will also need to discover a castaway who will be open to shifting to your island. So every time you spot one, make sure that you speak to them a few times, and they should be interested to move along. Reply to them in the affirmative and they will make a call to Tom Nook for the arrangements.

Stake Out Plots For Your New Residents
Once youve finished building your bridge, talk with Tom Nook and wait for him to assign you another task. This one is a bit more time-consuming youll have to prepare three plots for new homes and craft many different furniture for the future homeowners.
Walk around your island and place all three plots. The exact location isnt essential, but make sure you like where you put them. Otherwise, youll have to spend thousands of Bells to move them later in the game. When the task is complete, youll get a call from Tom Nook. Youll be informed that some of the items he wants you to craft rely on resources only available up in the cliffs sort of a problem for anyone without a ladder. Tom Nook will realize the issue and pass along its recipe. For the final step, head on over to Resident Services, where youll be able to craft your very own ladder from four pieces of wood, hardwood, and softwood.
All told, this process will take around four days to complete. If youre willing to time travel by modifying your Switch date, you can probably knock the whole process out in an afternoon. Unlike other tools in New Horizons, the ladder is unbreakable. This means you dont have to worry about getting stranded in the wilderness after youve clambered up a cliff.
Prepare Plots For Your Incoming New Residents
For these new island dwellers, Tom Nook promised fully kitted out homes – inside and out – so to achieve this goal you have to craft six items of furniture for each new household. Thankfully, Mr. Nook will give you a selection of new recipes that will help you furnish each of the new homes. Interestingly, one of the items you’ll need to craft requires flowers you won’t have come across yet, flowers that just happen to reside on the higher levels of your island. If only you had a ladder.;
So first, place all three plots for your new residents and then you’ll receive a phonecall from Tom Nook. He’ll explain the flower access issue, and finally give you a recipe for the ladder.;
Then it’s just a case of heading over to Residents’ Services and crafting one. You’ll only need four wood, four hardwood and four softwood in order to make it.;

You can read more on inviting new islanders here. Once all three have been invited you’ll be asked to build three houses along with furnishings. One of the items you need to make is a wreath, meaning you’ll need to reach the flowers growing up on the cliff edges. Tom Nook will send you a recipe for a ladder at this point.

A Grand Entrance Onto Your Island
One of the best things to do to really make your island stand out is to create a grand entrance from your Airport. Some people are lucky enough that their townhall and their airport are lined up and have a good amount of distance between them. This makes for the perfect space to add extra levels to create a forced entry way into your island.
How To Get The Ladder In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The Animal Crossing: New Horizons ladder is a crucial tool for getting around the island – particularly in the early stages, and when visiting Nook Miles Tickets islands.
Aim to get your little islander paws on the Animal Crossing: New Horizons ladder as soon as possible, because your brand new deserted island is actually split across several different levels. A brand new tool for the game, it’s an adorable little extending ladder that allows you to hop up to higher levels a bit like the pesky versions in Death Stranding actually but much more sturdy. You’re going to need it too, as your island will have at least one other level upon which to find more resources and expand your little settlement.
However, there’s a catch. You don’t get the ladder for quite some time in the game, meaning those upper levels both on your own island, and those you’ll visit using Nook Miles Tickets, are completely off-limits at first.;

Common Mystery Islands In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Apart from the starter mystery islands that have an encounter rate of 9.68%, there are various common layouts that have encounter rates ranging from 5%-10%.
Bamboo Island : One of the most common mystery island layouts in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the Bamboo island is a one-layer island filled with bamboo trees and a few palm trees on the beach.
Waterfall Island : Another common but fascinating island, this one has three layers and is filled with cliffs. A river starts from the top-most layer and flows counter-clockwise into the sea, making various waterfalls along the way. This island is extremely useful for catching cliff-top fish and river-mouth spawning fish.
Sister Fruit Island : This Animal Crossing: New Horizons mystery island has 19 fruit trees that are of a different type than the player’s native fruit. The fruit here will always be the same ones referred to as “sister fruit”. The island also has a short river flowing into the sea through the west coast.
Mountain Island : The mountain island has three tiers, with the first tier containing hardwood or cedar trees and the second tier containing only fruit trees. Additionally, the top tier is filled with flowers and rocks. This island doesn’t have any ponds or rivers. However, it is great for catching bugs.

Use A Stone Ax Not An Iron One
If we’ve learned anything over the past few millennia, it’s that iron cuts down trees better than stone does, right? Well, in Animal Crossing, you might not actually want to cut down your trees; you might just want wood, soft wood or hard wood for crafting. Luckily, the stone ax extracts those types of wood without chopping down the tree.

How To Get The Ladder
Everything you need to know to get the Ladder, one of the handiest tools in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
One of the most frustrating things youll encounter early on in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is that a good portion of your island is inaccessible due to high cliffs. Thankfully, you can unlock access to these higher lands, but youre going to need a Ladder to do so. This guide will break down everything you need to know to build the Ladder, so that you can get around easily.
How To Get A Bridge In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Crossing the river now allows you to collect fossils and explore more of the island – but you’ll soon grow tired of having to use the Vaulting Pole every time you want to explore these later regions. For this, we need to build a bridge.
Building a bridge in Animal Crossing: New Horizons takes a little more work, and requires you unlock Nook’s Cranny and start the process of placing new Villager houses around the island.
If you’re not there yet, the steps are as follows. Talk to Timmy and Tommy in Residential Services, who want to build a shop but need various resources first – 30 pieces of each type of Wood Material, as well as 30 Iron Nuggets.
Settle on where to build the shop, and the next day, it will be open for business. On the same day, Nook will then have a phone call about new people interested in the island relocation programme during his usual daily briefing.
Once he has the call, pay Nook a visit in Residential Services. Talk to him about the new Villagers arriving, and when ready, choose ‘What should I do?’ from the menu.
It’s at this point the Bridge unlocks – as before the Villagers can arrive, they need a way to get around the island. You’ll receive the Bridge Construction Kit, which requires the following materials:
- 4x Log Stakes
- 4x Clay
- 4x Stone
Wait For Tom Nook To Offer You A Bridge Construction Kit
Before any of these fresh faces can move to your island though, Tom Nook will need to give you the green light. You’ll know that the process is starting when he offers you the recipe for a bridge construction kit. You’ll need to gather the resources to actually build it – four log stakes, four bits of clay, and four stone lumps – and when you’ve done that you can pick a spot to open up the island. That will give you more space to put down the holding lots for your new residents.;
How To Get More Path Options
Like waterscaping and cliffscaping, if you want more options for the kinds of paths you lay, you’ll need to pay up in Nook Miles. Additional paths cost 2,000 Nook Miles apiece , and come in the following options:
- Arched tile
- Custom design
The good news is, the Nook Miles purchase is a one-time fee. Once you own the path, you can lay down as much as you want — no crafting or extra purchases needed.
Playing On The Nintendo Switch Lite
Nintendo Switch Lite owners rejoice! You can take part in the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, too. The game is compatible with the handheld-only device, and what’s more, players can still engage in multiplayer fun. Players still need a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play. Also, if you plan to play locally with your friends, it’s necessary to connect some Joy-Cons or Pro Controllers for the other players as well. It works the same as the Nintendo Switch; so, keep in mind that you can’t move it to another once you create an island on one system.
