How Do I Get Flowers On My Island
As your island life begins youll notice that your new home has been assigned with one type of native fruit. Explore further and youll see that you also have three types of flower growing naturally. There are a total of eight flower types in New Horizons: Lilies, Roses, Cosmos, Mums, Hyacinths, Windflowers, Tulips and Pansies. You can dig them up and re-plant them around your island as you choose.
At first, youll be able to find flowers in three natural colours, usually red, white and yellow. Timmy and Tommy also sell native flowers at Nooks Cranny and theyll add more as you upgrade your store. Unfortunately, theyll never stock all eight variants, meaning that you have to source the remaining five non-native flowers in other ways.
One of the best ways to complete your floral collection is by visiting friends islands via local or online multiplayer and taking the flowers that you dont have from them. There is also a small chance that non-native flowers will spawn on islands you visit during Mystery Tours, but getting them from friends is much faster.
The final way to add new flowers to your island is by breeding hybrid colours that you cant buy anywhere else. Creating hybrid flowers is a feature thats been present in other Animal Crossing games and its just as easy to do in New Horizons as it was in New Leaf and City Folk.
How To Get Flowers Plant Seeds And Grow More
In New Horizons, there are 8 different types of flowers that can naturally appear or be planted on your island:
Flower Species | |
---|---|
Tulips | Windflowers |
When first starting off on your island, there will only be a few ways to obtain flowers. Each island has its own native flower that grows naturally on the cliffs and higher elevations of your island – which you cannot reach until you get a ladder recipe from Tom Nook while helping to furnish homes for incoming villagers.
You can transplant these flowers to other parts of the island by using a shovel .
Beyond this, you can also buy flower seeds in basic colors from Timmy and Tommy – but the types will vary between three types per island, and the selection will be based on how far along youve come in building and upgrading their shop – Nooks Cranny:
- Timmy at the Resident Services Tent: 3 Different Seeds, 3 Kinds of Flowers – 1 Color Type Each
- Nooks Cranny Shop: 6 Different Seeds, 3 Kinds of Flowers – 2 Color Types of Each
- Nooks Cranny Shop: 9 Different Seeds, 3 Kinds of Flowers – 3 Color Types of Each
Seeds can be planted almost anywhere on your island without needing a shovel, and will grow on their own with or without water in a few days.
The best way to get other types of flowers is by making friends, and checking in with them to see what types of seeds are sold in their towns. Its the most reliable way to get the types you’re missing, so check in with them often!

The Colors Duke The Colors
Whatever your native flowers are, you will only find three colors growing in the wild or for sale from the Nooklings. However, if you plant specific colors close together, you can produce new colors like pink, purple, and even black. Some of the combinations make sense, like red roses and white roses making pink roses. Other combinations are a bit less intuitive.
Some of the potential hybrid flowers also don’t look any different however, just like with genetics in the real world, some flowers will be carrying recessive genes that can potentially produce brand new colors. Take red roses, for example. There are specific hybrids of red roses that can produce blue roses. This is the only combination that will grant blue roses, but the hybrid reds don’t look any different from regular red roses. So, unless you’re planning on just letting all your flowers do as they will, it’s essential to keep your hybrids separate.

Even if youve fulfilled all the preconditions for Cross Pollination, it may not occur the very next day. You might have to wait multiple days for Golden Roses to appear. Be sure to plant as many Black Roses as possible to maximize your chances of Golden Roses appearing.
How Do I Breed Hybrid Flowers
Hybrid flowers are flowers that are not the same colour as their parent plants. To cross-pollinate flowers and receive the rare hybrid varieties you need to plant your flowers in a diagonal or checkerboard pattern with a gap between each plant, so new flowers can grow from the parent plant beside them. Youll also need to make sure that each flower is adequately watered, a metric you can gauge by seeing whether a given plant sparkles or not. Sparkling flowers are happy, healthy and ready to breed, so use your watering can or wait for rain.
Complete these steps and a new flower with a unique hybrid colour should eventually begin to grow in one of your empty spaces. However, offspring may also be the same colour as the parent plant or one of several other varieties. If you have at least one other plant of the same species touching a parent plant along the diagonal, hough, you will produce rare hybrid offspring of a different colour eventually. For a more simplified guide on which colour pairs produce what, read the sections below.

How To Get All The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Flowers
Like with the Animal Crossing: New Horizons fruit, you will have a certain number of flowers native to your island. On mine, for example, I grew pansies, hyacinths and windflowers natively, but had to travel to friends’ islands to gather the rest. You can get lucky using Nook Miles Tickets trips, but I’ve not had any luck with that despite all the money I’ve spent on tickets.

Growing Blue Roses In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Once players have special White and Hybrid Red roses, they should cross them to breed Orange Roses. While Orange Roses can be generated through other cross-breeding techniques, this is the best way for players to have the highest possible chance of obtaining Blue Roses.
Players will need to cross this Orange Rose with the special White Roses. This should eventually spawn special Hybrid Red Roses. These are the player’s ticket to Blue Roses.
Players will need to cross two or more of the special Hybrid Red Roses to try and spawn Blue Roses. Players should place as many special Red Roses for cross-breeding as possible to further increase their chances of growing Blue Roses. Blue Roses are also self-spawning, meaning only having one should be enough to grow more on the island.
Blue Roses only sell for up to 1,000 bells. Because of the lengthy growing process, these are not great flowers to sell for profit. Instead, players should use them for decoration. Blue Roses are the main ingredient for the DIY Blue Rose Crown, which players can wear. With a lot of patience , players can grow this rare flower and display them proudly on their island home.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available on the Nintendo Switch.
Native Flowers And Sister Flowers

The flower stock at Nooks Cranny will rotate each day, with three types of flowers available at any given time. As mentioned above, your island will have one type of native flower this flower is always in stock at Nooks Cranny. Youll also have a sister flower, which will also always be in stock. The third flower in stock on any given day is determined by which month it is and can change each day within that month. For example, in the Northern Hemisphere, roses, tulips, and windflowers are all in season in May. If none of these are your native or sister flower, theyll take turns being in stock at Nooks Cranny each day in May.
According to datamined information, native flowers are determined at random based on which flowers are in season during your starting characters birth month, while your sister flower is one of the flowers that were in season during the month you started your island. If you arent sure what your sister flower is, visit a few Mystery Tour islands you can only encounter your native flower or your sister flower on these islands.

The Exact Probability Is Unknown
Given that there is no written indication in-game, it is not currently clear what the exact probability of Blue Roses spawning is. However, if we compare this to the Golden Rose, which sees at least 1 spawn every 2-3 days, we can safely assume that the Blue Rose has an even lower probability.
This number reflects only our own personal experience with the Golden Rose!!!
Time & method is according to our team’s gameplay experience and may not be the same with yours.
Crossbreed To Make Purple & Orange Roses
White Rose x White Rose = Purple Rose

Orange Roses can be grown by crossbreeding a Yellow Rose and Red Rose together. Just like with the purples, you’ll want to have a lot of these!
Relocate New Flowers
The more Purples and Oranges you have, the more efficient your operation will be. As soon as one of these blooms, relocate it to a separate space immediately and start work there!

Boosting Flower Reproduction Rate
Watering your flowers, having your residents water them, or letting them get watered naturally by the rain will boost your flower reproduction rate by 5%, which is extremely low. However, you can boost that rate even further by having online visitors water them.
The first visitor will increase the rate to 25%, and you can boost it to 80% with at least five visitors watering your flowers. If possible, try to get five different people to water your flowers each day to basically guarantee your chances of getting a new flower the next day. You still might not get the color you want, but at least the reproduction rate will speed up the process.
Hybrid Flower Color Combinations
The color combination depend on the flower species you plant, so weve split our list by flowers below. There are also some hybrid flowers that look identical to the original flower, but produce special results when cross-pollinated. Keeping track of which flower is which is key! We dont have all the color combinations yet, but were updating our list as we discover them.
