How Does Tarantula Farming Work

Animal Crossing: New Horizons – How to Make Your Own Spider Island (Tarantula Farming Tips)

The key to tarantula farming is understanding how the spawn mechanics in Animal Crossing: New Horizons work. Bugs require certain conditions to spawn, including months of the year, the weather, and the environment. Tarantulas require it to be nighttime and during the correct months. In the Northern Hemisphere that’s November through April, while Southern Hemisphere players will need to be playing from May to October. Tarantula farming is all about manipulating spawn rates, which we’ll explain more below. You can always change your time and date in the Switch settings to fit these requirements, although time-skipping can have unintended consequences.

Tarantulas can be sold for a whopping 8,000 bells each , which means you can make some serious bells with this method. Make sure to purchase all the inventory upgrades first to get the best results, and ensure you aren’t carrying more than you need to when you commit to creating your first tarantula farm.

How To Catch A Scorpion

Requires: 1x net, shovel

Catching a scorpion in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is pretty much the same as catching a tarantula. Both creatures are hostile when provoked, which means running too close to them or approaching with your net. Scorpions will enter into a defensive position when they see you and may give chase if you aren’t careful. There are a few ways to approach catching them, which we’ve outlined below.

How To Find And Catch Tarantulas In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Tarantulas are a rare bug found in Animal Crossing: New Horizons during the evening hours, between 7pm and 4am, and between the months of November to April. Even then, they will only appear on your island at rare intervals.

If you get close to a Tarantula, they, like a Scorpion, will look at you and raise their legs. If you get any closer while they’re in this state, they will lunge for you and attack. Though you can catch it as it runs towards you, it’s very possible to miss – leading to you becoming stung and being knocked out, causing the Tarantula to flee.

To catch a Tarantula successfully, approach it slowly with your net held up . When it raises its legs, stop and wait. It’ll soon return to normal, allowing you to creep slowly towards it once more.

Repeat this process until you are close enough to drop the net on top of it. You can see this process in action in the following video:

Ensure Bugs Can Survive On The Island

The first thing you’ll want to do is ensure that bugs are populating the island you’ve been sent to. There are numerous blueprints for mystery islands, and some don’t allow for the creepy crawlies. If you see any bugs floating around usually an island can support a maximum of 4 bugs at a time then you’re ready to move on to the next step.

Scorpion Island: How To Spawn And Farm Scorpions

  • Requires: Nets, shovels, axes, ladder, vaulting pole, Nook Miles tickets

Scorpions can be farmed in the same way you can farm tarantulas. We have not verified how May’s new water bugs like the diving beetle and pondskater might affect scorpion spawn rates, but we will update as soon as we know.

The way farming scorpions works in Animal Crossing is by manipulating spawn rates by adjusting the conditions that certain bugs spawn. Some bugs require trees and flowers to spawn, while some spawn on the ground or in the air regardless of surroundings. To farm scorpions, you have to force spawn them.

Your first step is to buy a Nook Miles ticket and have several nets, shovels, and axes on hand. You will probably find enough raw materials to craft extra if you run out and you can buy more with Nook Miles tickets while you’re on a Mystery Tour, so don’t fill up your inventory with too many tools.

Next, head to the airport and . You’ll be dropped off at a random deserted island–some will have conditions that are ripe for scorpion farming, while others might be too tricky to deal with. We’ll talk about that more later. Once you’re on the island, you can begin spawning scorpions. You might also get lucky and end up on the rare scorpion island, in which case you won’t have to worry about the next part. Just start catching!

When To Sell Tarantulas

Once you’ve filled your inventory, you can head back home and cash in at Nook’s Cranny for 8,000 bells per tarantula–but you may also want to wait for Flick to visit your island, as he buys bugs for 150% of the usual price. That means he’ll buy each tarantula for 12,000 bells instead of the usual 8,000.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons How To Spawn And Catch Infinite Tarantulas

Your first thought when you hear the phrase “infinite tarantulas” might be to get out your matches so you can just set your house on fire and move across the country. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, their existence is actually a blessing in disguise.

Tarantulas are one of the most difficult bugs to catch in the game since they’re quick and one bite can cause you to faint. However, because of their difficulty, they can be sold for a lot of money at shops. You can take advantage of this even further by finding an island with your Nook Miles Ticket that spawns infinite tarantulas, which you can use to fund your island and pay back Tom Nook. Here’s how to turn these walking nightmares into money-making machines.

They will also spawn at a higher rate than on your own island, allowing you to quickly get back to hunting!

How To Make A Tarantula Island

How To Make Tarantula Island AFTER PATCH in Animal Crossing New Horizons! (Animal Crossing Tutorial)

The first step is to purchase a Nook Miles Ticket from the Resident Services building or tent. This costs 2,000 Nook Miles, so make sure you have enough before going to buy one. Once you have the ticket, run down to Dodo Airlines and use the ticket to fly to a deserted island. At this point it will need to be the correct time and date for the tarantula to spawn, so make sure to only fly after 7 PM.

If you’re lucky, you may get the tarantula island without doing anything, but most likely you won’t. Preferably you will want a single-level island, because islands with higher ground can make this more difficult, so feel free to try again to get a flatter island if you have the Nook Miles to spend.

The most important part of this method is to remove all of the resources on the island, removing the chance of other kinds of bugs spawning. Chop down the trees, dig up the stumps, break all the rocks, pick all the flowers, and remove all the weeds. To break rocks, just eat a piece of fruit and hit them with a shovel, sometimes they even have bells inside.

Donât worry about digging up all the flowers on the island, just plucking the flowers is enough to stop bugs from spawning on them, press A when standing in front of a flower to pluck them.

You can dump all of these items onto the beach to free up inventory space, as the raw items won’t affect how bugs spawn.

Why You Should Sell Tarantulas

Each tarantula sell for 8,000 Bells, which can net you hundreds of thousands of dollars if you increase your inventory space.

Of course, getting to the actual tarantula island isnt easy. In fact, getting there requires some luck.

To have a chance of landing there, you need to

  • Buy a Nook Miles Ticket for 2,000 Nook Miles from Resident Services.
  • Once you have your ticket, head to Dodo Airlines and this is the important part after 7 p.m. local time.
  • Let them know youd like to fly, and choose the Redeem Nook Miles option to take a Mystery Island Tour.
  • Youll know youve made it to the correct island if the one you land on has a circular river which forms a smaller island-within-the-island. If thats where youve landed, get ready to catch tarantulas.

However, if you land on an island thats not the actual tarantula island, there is a way to turn any island into one, if youre willing to put in some work.

Why Tarantula Farming Is Harder Now

The giant water bug is an April arrival for Northern Hemisphere players. It appears on freshwater like ponds and rivers, meaning it doesn’t require any of the foliage you’d typically clear out of your deserted island to generate a tarantula island. If you try to make a tarantula island now, you’ll find that in addition to having to scare away tiger beetles or wharf roaches to force tarantula spawns, you’ll also need to contend with giant water bug spawns. To make matters worse, giant water bugs don’t flitter away when you sprint by them, meaning you have to actually catch them with your net and release them each time they appear. This is making an already time-consuming process a long, tedious loop for players looking to make bells fast.

The Safest Way To Catch A Scorpion

If you’re afraid or don’t have the patience for the standard approach to catching scorpions, you can make scorpion “traps” by digging holes with the shovel. Scorpions can’t jump over holes like you can. The trick is to dig four holes all around you, hop out, then engage a scorpion. When it starts to chase you, run back to the holes and jump into the middle. The scorpion won’t be able to reach you, but it will still be within range of your net, so you can safely catch it from the other side of the trench.

Does Tarantula Farming Still Work In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Tarantula farming isn’t broken in New Horizons, but a new insect arrival has thrown it completely off balance.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons had only been out for a few days before players found a way to exploit spawn conditions for valuable bugs and get rich quick. Farming tarantulas quickly became one of the top money-making schemes for deserted island dwellers. Tarantulas, the semi-rare, nocturnal arachnid–and one of the few hostile creatures in Animal Crossing–are worth 8,000 bells each if you can catch them. But in the past couple of weeks, the arrival of new bugs for the month of April has also meant new competition for the profitable tarantula–the giant water bug is here and it’s making tarantula farming in Animal Crossing a lot more difficult.

We have a whole guide on tarantula farming, but the gist of it is this: you head to a deserted island via Mystery Tour and clear out all the resources like rocks, trees, stumps, and flowers. This removes spawn conditions for other bugs, which will force the tarantula to spawn more than usual. Previously, players didn’t have to worry about bodies of water on their deserted island, because in the Northern Hemisphere at least, there were no seasonal bugs that spawned on water. Enter: the giant water bug.

Visit Tarantula Island In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Now theres a small chance that youll encounter a Tarantula Island when setting off on any nighttime Mystery Island Tour, but its very unlikely. These islands have few/no inhabitants, minimal flora, and are absolutely smothered in tarantulas. For the wrong person? Horrific. For the net-wielder? A chance for a lot of cash, as tarantulas are worth an awful lot of money . Users whove visited Tarantula island have brought in a haul worth over 200,000 bells in a single run.

I passed out so many times from bites that my heart only pumps venom now. I am more tarantula than man.I came to the island looking for iron nuggets – I left having utterly shattered Animal Crossing’s economy on my very first day.

    Infinite Tarantula King

Tarantula island can be reached during November – April whenever you take a Mystery Island Tour at night . Youll know youre in the right place when tarantulas infinitely spawn on the island as you run around and catch them. There can usually be up to 5 at a time, and many won’t attack you if you don’t pull out your net. Dont worry if you get bitten, youll just be returned to the plane runway, so take your time, conquer your fear and catch as many tarantula as you can.

How To Farm Tarantulas In Animal Crossing New Horizons

Farming tarantulas in Animal Crossing New Horizons is still possible by time travelling backwards into March.

Tarantulas can only be farmed between 19:00 and 04:00 and March is a better month than April because theres no water bugs.

The Day Before – Announcement Trailer

When youve time travelled back into March, all you need to do is visit a Mysterious Island and repeat the trusted method for farming tarantulas.

Chop down all the trees, dig up every tree stump, break all the rocks, pick every flower, and remove all weeds. With your inventory becoming full, its okay to drop everything on the ground as this wont affect the spawning of spiders.

Once youve done that, rid the island of all bugs and other critters by either catching them or chasing them away.

All of the above should result in tarantulas spawning on your mysterious isle. In order to catch them as safely as possible, most people recommend digging several holes in one spot of the island in the formation of a diamond.

When you spot a tarantula, quickly run to your base and leap over the holes into a safe space in the middle so the tarantula cant get you. This should allow you to then easily catch it with your trusted net as it runs about in circles.
