Animal Crossing: New Horizons Orchard Layout Guide
When you first start out, you may be tempted to plant your fruit trees super close together in order to maximize both space and output. There are two big reasons why thats a pretty bad idea, though. First of all, fruit trees need at least one empty space on every side in order to grow large enough to produce fruit. If they dont have enough space, theyll stay saplings forever, and youll never be able to harvest them.
Secondly, planting trees super close together makes it incredibly difficult to actually harvest your fruit. If your orchard is too compact, youll spend the majority of your time trying to navigate around your trees and looking for fruit to pick up .
That being said, weve found that the optimal orchard layout is to plant fruit trees with at least two spaces between them, going both horizontally and vertically. Weve found that leaving three spaces between works out great, especially if you stagger the rows.
That looks something like this in a 12×5 grid :
Can Animal Crossing Players Change Their Local Fruit Type
Animal Crossing starts players out with one of five random fruit types on their island. Is there any way to change this after New Horizons begins?
Fruit trees are a staple of the Animal Crossing series, providing an easy and renewable way to earn Bells quickly. Each player starts with one of five different types of fruit on their island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons: apples, oranges, cherries, peaches, and pears. Is there any way to change this once it’s been decided?
An island’s fruit is determined when players pick their island’s map, a process that begins at the check-in counter as soon as the game begins. At this stage, players have the option to close and restart the game if the perfect New Horizons island layout isn’t available, but it cannot be changed again after that. Unfortunately, Animal Crossing doesn’t provide the option of selecting which fruit is native to the island. Instead, the process is entirely random.
How Do You Get Perfect Fruit In New Horizons
Native fruit trees can produce perfect fruit only so make sure you have plenty of native fruit on your island. If you want, you can sell them to the Nooks for 600 Bells, rather than the regular 100 Bells. But we recommend planting it to spawn a perfect fruit tree so you can continue to make lots of Bells!

How To Get Coconuts
You can obtain coconuts by going on trips using Nook Miles Tickets and harvesting them on deserted islands. These cost 2000 Nook Miles and send you to a randomly generated island.
All of these islands have some palm trees scattered about which you can shake to receive two coconuts. I highly recommend you plant some back at home!
How To Plant Fruit Trees In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Make new fruit trees on your island.
Fruit trees are an essential mechanic in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that you want to become familiar with pretty quickly. You begin the game with some fruit on your starting island, but there are others you can grow.
Whenever you have a new or old fruit in your inventory, you have the option of selling it, eating it, planting it to make more trees on your island. Before you can grow one of these trees, you do need to have access to a shovel. You can obtain one from Blathers when they arrive at your islands to help host the museum. Once the museum opens up, he gives you the recipe, which you can freely use moving forward.
Now, find a location you want to plant your new fruit tree. Once you find your ideal location, take your shovel out and dig a hole. For the next step, go into your inventory and select the fruit you want to plant at that location. You want to continue holding the shovel for this part. With your shovel in hand, you will planet the fruit tree, and you need to water and take care of it to have it grow.
Growing things in Animal Crossing is a timely process, so you need to have a little patience through this process. Dont get too carried away because theres plenty of things to do on your island, but make sure to water it every so often so it will grow faster.

How To Grow Regular Trees
To grow a tree without fruit in Animal Crossing, you’ll need to follow different steps than a tree with fruit. Here’s how to plant and grow a tree.
Buy saplings from Nook’s Cranny. You can buy singular tree saplings, or you can buy them in groups of five. If you’re at the beginning of the game, you can still find tree saplings from Timmy in Resident Services.
Find a spot to plant the tree. Make sure there is at least one block of space between the area of the tree you want to plant and objects such as water, cliffs, or other trees.
Go into your inventory and select the sapling. Choose Plant Here to plant your sapling in the spot you have chose.
Get From Mystery Tour Islands
You can use Nook Miles Tickets to go on Mystery Tours to deserted islands, those will sometimes have fruits that differ from your starting fruit.
Just make sure you have plenty of space in your inventory to bring back as many fruits and goods as possible! Mystery Island Tours and Nook Miles Ticket Guide

You can reset your charged stamina to zero by sitting on a toilet and… well, you can imagine. If you’re worried about accidentally destroying a tree with your overwhelming strength, it might be time for a trip to the lavatory.
How To Gather Other Trees
Fruit that’s native to your island sells for 100 Bells, but fruit that originated elsewhere sells for 500 each. That means to get a really profitable orchard going, you’re going to need to do some traveling. The best way to get a full variety of fruit is to coordinate with friends. They can visit their island’s airport and let Orville know they’re interested in visitors. Your friends will need to connect to the internet, which may require updating the game software.
Once that’s done they, can request a five-digit Dodo Code and share it with you. Visit your airport and tell Orville you want to fly, and you’ll be prompted to enter the code. These only work for a short period, so don’t wait too long!
Bring some of your native fruit, and you can drop it for your friend to pick up. They can drop some fruit for you, or you can shake down some of their trees and take them back home to plant. Fruit from other islands can take longer to grow, reappearing every five or six days, but it’s well worth the wait!

How To Get Animal Crossing: New Horizons Vegetables And Crop Starts
Our Sloth friend Leif now sells produce starts in addition to the seeds and shrubs he usually sells. Not unlike pumpkin starts, you can buy vegetables and crops individually or in bulks of five. All of the new crop starts sell for 280 Bells individually, and for 1,400 Bells in bulk.
You’ll be able to purchase crop and vegetable starts from Leif when he visits your island and sets up his stall, but you can also open up his shop on Harv’s island to be able to get your hands on more produce daily. The groovy dog now has a place for all of the familiar faces to set up shop, which is great news for those of us who can’t wait for a certain vendor to pay a visit.
If you hop on a plane to Harv’s island at the airport, you can then donate 100,000 bells to fund a “botany expert with the greenest thumbs”. Bear in mind that you can only open one shop through a donation each day, so go for Leif’s first if you want to get to more vegetables and crops. The next day, Leif’s store will open and you can purchase your veggies to start up your little farm. Leif will usually have two different varieties of crop starts in stock.
Different Types Of Trees
There are several different types of Fruit Trees in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. While you may only start off with one of these fruit trees on your island when you first start off building up your Animal Crossing: New Horizon island, you’ll quickly find yourself asking “How many types of fruit trees are there in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?”. In the latest installment of the much-loved life simulation game franchise on the Nintendo Switch, there are many different types of fruit trees, and you’ll find yourself wanting to collect them all.
The five different fruit trees in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are:
- Apple Trees
- Coconut Trees

How To Get Foreign Fruit
You may get lucky and have your in-game mom send you some non-native fruit, or a villager may be feeling particularly generous. However, the easiest way to get foreign fruit is to just visit a friend who has a different native fruit on their island.
You can both take some fruit and plant it back home, easy as pie. Again, foreign fruit does take longer to grow than your native fruits but are well-worth the small amount of effort it takes to get them back home and planted.
That’s it for our guide on how to play fruit in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. If you found this guide useful, take a gander at our steadily growing list of New Horizons guides or check out some of these specific ones:
Watering Your Pumpkin Plants
Pumpkins like a lot of water, so give them a steady stream while they’re growing to maximize how many pumpkins each plant will produce. Pumpkin plants can grow anywhere between one and three pumpkins, but you’ll only get up to three if you keep them nice and hydrated. Just like flowers, pumpkins will have a little shine to indicate that they’ve been watered. If you don’t see that shine, give them an extra bit of water.
Animal Crossing: How To Plant Different Fruit Trees In New Horizons
Fortunately, trees can be chopped down and uprooted in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which means that players don’t have to keep any of their island’s starting fruit trees if they don’t want to. Instead, they can acquire the fruit of their choice by either touring New Horizons’ mystery islands or exchanging them with other players. Many instead opt to diversify the island’s trees, planting several of each variety around the island, sometimes even in a designated orchard space. Fruit trees in Animal Crossing are not only profitable, but can also be used as a convenient design feature, more so given the terraforming options available in New Horizons.
This feature is likewise something that could be changed moving forward, as well, given that Nintendo reportedly plans to continue support of New Horizons for the foreseeable future. New Animal Crossing content and other free updates are consistently being added to the game, meaning that at some point perhaps it will be possible to select a specific fruit tree when a new island is created. Players may eventually even be able to talk to Isabelle at Resident Services in order to make a change once the game’s already begun, or perhaps such a mechanic could eventually be implemented into the next Animal Crossing game. For the time being, however, players will simply have to work with the options that are already provided in New Horizons.

Why You Should Grow Trees
So how will growing trees help you out in-game? There are quite a few benefits of growing lots of trees in your village.
Growing regular trees is excellent for decoration, but that’s not all they can be. You can shake normal trees, and sometimes they will drop bells or furniture. Just be careful of wasp nests!
Fruit trees are suitable to grow if you want to have every fruit on your island and sell them. The more fruit you can collect daily, the more bells you’ll be able to get. You can also chop down trees in Animal Crossing to get materials for tools.
The benefit of money trees, of course, needs no explanation. You get three times the amount you put in for free. Trees, in general, are significant in Animal Crossing and can help you out immensely.

Do You Want Another Tree
If so, here’s what you have to do: After planting the tree you just planted, dig a hole right next to it. If you want your town to be organized, dig two holes . These are used as spaceholders in order to prevent lacking patterns. Now, dig a hole at the end of the one/two holes. This is the one you will use for the fruit. Throw the fruit in, and that tree will also sprout.
