How To Play Online With Friends
There are several methods for online multiplayer in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons game. You can play either online mode or local mode .
If you choose to play online, bear in mind that it will require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Local multiplayer is free.
This article will explain the steps required to play in online mode with other Animal Crossing members around the world. You can play with up to 7 other players online on the same island. The which are steps needed for offline mode are similar, you’ll need to just choose “Local play” in the options instead.
What To Do In Your First Days
After youre set up with the first introductory day, by going to sleep after the welcome party, the island is your oyster. Tom Nook will have more specific activities for you to do that will teach you how to slowly improve your island. You may have a simple place now, but it can eventually grow into a bustling little village. Keep checking in with Tom Nook after you complete tasks to progress. You can also check in with him if youre unsure of what to do.
Be sure to talk to the other villagers to improve your friendship with them. You cant actively track your progress with them, but once you get the option to give them presents after a few days, youll know youre on the right track. Theyll often give you things in return too!
Inviting Others To Your Island
- Head to the Airport and talk to Orville, the Dodo bird behind the counter.
Tell him I want visitors.
- Then specify that you want to do this Via online play.
He’ll tell you that he needs to set up the online connection. Select Roger!.
You can then choose to either invite via a code or Fling ’em open!. The second of which allows random players to visit your island. If you’ve already experienced multiplayer you will also have the option of choosing to either invite All my friends!, Only my Best Friends! or you can have random people visit you by selecting The more the merrier!
If you want to play with someone who you know, but who isn’t registered as a friend within New Horizons or on your Nintendo Switch, select Invite via Dodo Code.
Make sure you tell your friend the name of your island along with the code so they can make sure they are going to the right island.
- Now have your friend complete the following steps.

Take Advantage Of Special Visitors
Within the first few days of your island adventure, you’ll likely come across a unique visitor — such as Gulliver, the sea gull asleep on the beach, or Wisp, the easily frightened ghost. Each of these visitors will teach you something, sell you something or send you on a short mission. These missions will earn you unique item rewards.
My personal favorite visitor so far is C.J., a beaver-blogger who loves to fish. He’ll ask you to catch special fish for him, order fish decorations for you , and pay you extra for any fish you sell him. In a single day with C.J., I ordered a handful of fish decorations to hang on my walls and made nearly 60,000 bells just angling as usual. It was a good day.
What To Do On Day 1
Youll start by picking your campsite location as well as the campsite locations of the other two villagers youve been handed. Pick carefully because you wont be able to change these locations for a while .
Once youve placed everyones tents, Tom Nook will give you some simple objectives . Finish that and head to the party. Feel free to take a nap after this, which is when the real game will start.
Once you wake up, youll be playing in real time . Make sure you speak to all of the villagers, as you may get some free furniture or a recipe for being a friendly neighbor.
Nook will give you the recipes for flimsy tools. Youll want to make a Flimsy Fishing Rod and a Flimsy Bug Net.
Big Goal 1 Donate 5 fish or bugs to Tom Nook for study
Use your fishing rod and net to collect the various bugs and fish youll see on your island. On your first day, youll only need five unique critters. After donating five, Nook will grant you an axe recipe and a watering can recipe. Hell also call his buddy, Blathers the Owl, and tell him to come to the island to open a museum.
Note: If you are playing on a Switch with other people, only the primary account holder can donate things to Nook. To make progress, youll need that primary account holder to finish their five donations.
Decide where you want Blathers Museum to go. Youll want to pick something central as youll be going there quite a bit.
Big Goal 2 Pay off Tom Nook
Big Goal 4 Harvest resources

Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a 2020 life simulation game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch; it is the fifth main game in the Animal Crossing series. In New Horizons, the player controls a character who moves to a deserted island after purchasing a getaway package from Tom Nook, playing the game in a nonlinear fashion and developing the island as they choose. They can gather and craft items, customize the island, and form it into a community of anthropomorphic animals.
According to the developers, New Horizons began development in 2012. The game director, Aya Kyogoku, had the philosophy of retaining old content from previous games to keep fans happy while also making the game simple enough to appeal to newcomers. With art and graphics, they used the concept of “trigger of play” and the “imagination gap”, where the former kept the gameplay simplistic and easy to pick up while the latter kept the art style simple for the player to imagine the rest.
Create Switch User Accounts For Each Player
To play New Horizons in couch co-op mode, youll need to have a Switch user account for each player. If you dont already have them created, heres how.
Navigate to System Settings > Users > Add User.
Select the Create New User button and then choose an icon for the user. Enter a nickname for the user and select the OK button. When it asks to link a Nintendo Account, select Later.

The Three Multiplayer Modes
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a huge limitation to it that makes it so that only one island can be created on a Nintendo Switch regardless of how many user accounts there are. That means that if multiple people want to play from one console, they’ll all have to share an island together. Thing is, only the person who starts the game first will actually be able to make any serious island progress. This can definitely be frustrating for the other players sharing the island. If you’d rather have it to where everyone has their own islands, then everyone will need their own Switch and their own copy of New Horizons.
There are three main kinds of multiplayer modes: Local couch co-op, online play, and local wireless.
- Couch Co-op : This mode allows up to eight players to share a Switch and a New Horizons island. However, only up to four players at a time can play on the same island in this mode.
- Online Co-op: This mode allows players to use and internet to visit each other’s islands. Players do not need to by physically close. Up to eight players can be on one island at a time in this mode.
- Local Wireless Co-op: This mode is for players who are physically near each other, each have their own Switch, and their own copy of New Horizons. Up to eight players can be on one person’s island at a time.
We’ll explain what activities you can do in each multiplayer mode and how to get them set up.
What To Do On Day 6
Another freebie day. You should have another new villager in town, but outside of talking to them there wont be a lot of must-dos. Feel free to spend the day however you wish. Drowning in Nook Miles? Buy a ticket to a Nook Island, and maybe youll luck out with some fruit you dont already have.
Or you can spend the day fishing and collecting bugs to build up your stash of Bells. Its really up to you!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Mechanics
As in previous installments in the Animal Crossing series, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a nonlinear life simulation game played in real-time. The player assumes the role of a customizable character who moves to a deserted island after purchasing a deserted island package from Tom Nook, a tanuki character who is a staple of the series. The game proceeds in an open-ended fashion as the player explores the island, and develops it into a community of anthropomorphic animals. Players can collect different items to use as decorations within the game. Similar to the 2017 spin-off title Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, the game introduces a crafting system that allows the player to convert materials into tools and furniture, which can be used to decorate the game’s interior and exterior spaces.

Each Session Will Have A Leader
Judging by the Nintendo Treehouse presentation that aired last year , each local co-op session will have a leader. This leader is indicated by a yellow flag above their head. Only the leader can enter and exit buildings , select items from their inventory, and move the screen camera along with them.

Your New Raccoon Landlord
When you wake up, Tom Nook will be outside your tent. He’s ready to give you your NookPhone, and give you your first long-term goal of the game.
Moving to a deserted island isn’t free, it seems, and now you owe Tom Nook about 50,000 bells . Luckily, Tom is considerate enough to let you pay your debt back in miles, like a sort of indentured credit card reward program. As he explains, you’ll earn Nook Miles for performing tasks around the island, like catching fish and bugs, or decorating your house.
You’ll need to earn 5,000 Nook Miles to pay off your first loan. Whenever you perform a task that earns you miles, a phone icon will appear in the top-left corner and start beeping.
Before you do anything, check to see if your mailbox is flashing! If your Switch is connected to the internet, you should receive two presents directly from Nintendo. One is a virtual Nintendo Switch that you can place inside your tent , and the other is a “Simple DIY workbench,” which you can use later to craft tools.
There are a few tasks you can perform to earn miles immediately.
- Open your Nook Miles app.
- Talk to both of your neighbors. They might also give you presents for helping set up their tents!
- Sell 50 weeds.
- Take a picture with your NookPhone’s camera app.
- Open your NookPhone’s passport app and edit any aspect of it.
- Post a message on the bulletin board in the island plaza.
- Open the “Custom Designs” app and make a new design.
- Shake a tree and make a piece of furniture fall out .
Nintendo Switch Online App
The Nintendo Switch Online App can connect to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This connection is known as NookLink. NookLink lets you scan QR codes of custom designs from Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer but it also has some features specifically for multiplayer.
Just like the Chat Log app on your in-game phone, you can use your real phone to type out messages.
1. Open the Nintendo Switch Online App > Animal Crossing New Horizons > Chat Keyboard.
2. When connected online you can message other Animal Crossing: New Horizons players using your smart phone keyboard.
Open the Nintendo Switch Online App > Voice Chat. Make sure you’re connected online.

How To Set Up Party Play In Local Co
- Whenever multiple people inhabit one island, Tom Nook gives the players a new app called Call Resident, which allows for party play. To initiate party play, one person starts up the game and then selects from their NookPhone.
Select the players you want to play with.
- The person who set up Party Play becomes the leader. Wherever they go, the other players will follow.
Once the leader finds an area they want to explore, everyone can participate in a local activity.
If you want to change who the leader is, you can do so by shaking the Joy-Con or by opening the app and then having the new leader press the right button on their controller.
