Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Swimming
If you played Animal Crossing: New Leaf on 3DS and are now taking your first steps on your new desert island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you may well be looking forward to diving into the lovely HD ocean of the Switch entry in Nintendo’s life sim series.
The question “Can you swim in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?” was one of the first that popped into our heads as we ran around the perimeter of our lovely island paradise. For the first months following the game’s launch, the answer was disappointing, but following the first Summer Update you can now get more closely acquainted with the waters surrounding your island…
How To Find Sea Creatures While Swimming In Animal Crossing
One of the best parts about being able to swim in Animal Crossing is that you’re now able to find sea creatures in the ocean.;
“Swim in the inviting waters off the coast of your island and dive to discover and scoop up sea creatures that inhabit your islands ecosystem,” a statement reads. “Keep your eyes peeled for any prospective additions to the museum, and make sure to listen for fun facts from Blathers when you donate your new discoveries.”
To get sea creatures, you need to press Y to dive down. You should see a dark shadow in the water. Just swim over to them, and your character will pick it up. Different sea creatures will show up depending on certain circumstances, such as;time and season.
If you’re able to find a Scallop then Pascal the red otter will appear, and offer to trade you the Scallop for a mermaid DIY recipe.
Types Of Sea Creature
Similar to fish and bugs, the deep-sea creature collectables come in different types.
- Lobsters, shrimps and crabs are a type of crustacean, with Acorn Barnacles, a type of arthropod and Giant Isopods also being a type of crustacean.
- The Turban Shell, Sea Slug, Scallop, , Abalone, Oyster, Ear Shell, Clam and Pearl Oyster are all mollusks.

How To Swim And Dive
Swimming is as simple as popping that swim suit on, walking up to the sea and pressing A to leap in! Bonus points for running and dive bombing!
To move around in the water, you need to repeatedly tap A to swim, and thats true whether youre swimming on the surface or diving down below. Diving is a single tap of Y.
To get back out of the ocean, you just need to swim over to one of the beaches on your island and youll wade out the water.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
As we mentioned above, the New Horizons Summer update is set to bring a couple of cool new changes to the game on July 3. The main new feature will allow players to finally leave the beach and begin swimming and diving. As you can see in the trailer below, to swim in New Horizons, players simply need to jump into the water and swim around. Further, players will be able to dive down to the ocean floor to pick up new items like sea stars and scallops. However, this feature will not be available until the update hits this July.
In addition to the new swimming and diving feature, players will also be able to encounter a new character named Pascal In New Horizons, it seems that he likes to hang out in the water and will appear when you find scallops. Based on the trailer, it looks like players will be able to give Pascal scallops in exchange for new DIY recipes. The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Summer update is also teasing a new encounter with Gulliver, which appears to offer some time of unannounced reward for helping him.;
The first of the Animal Crossing New Horizons Summer updates will be released on July 3, followed by a second update sometime in August. It seems that Nintendo is giving players plenty of things to do to keep them busy over the summer months, so get ready for a bunch of new content in the coming weeks.;

How To Swim In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
After you’ve brought a wetsuit it’s time to explore the sea surrounding your island in New Horizons.
First, however, you need to put your wetsuit on, which is done exactly like how you change into every other clothing item. Simply find it in your inventory, select it and then choose the option – ‘Wear.’
There are other swimming themed clothing, such as the scuba mask, which you can wear while swimming. These items, however, won’t have an impact on your swimming or diving abilities.
Now that you’re all suited up, it’s time to head to the shore and get into the water.
You can either simply walk into the waves or dive bomb from one of the stony platforms dotted around your island by pressing A.
To swim you need to press A and then use the left analogue stick to decide which direction you wish to go in; simply decide which direction you want to go in and head that way.
A Way To Explore The Seas
Swimming and diving are two features new to New Horizons, but which existed in previous AC games. They will allow you to enter the water around your island and dive to the bottom of it. There, you can pick up various items, such as Sea Creatures.
Swim Any Time Of The Year
Regardless of what hemisphere you’re playing on, you’ll be able to swim in the water around your island all year. Although it might be chilly, you can even go swimming and diving during the winter!
Dive On Mystery Islands Too
It’s also possible to swim and dive in the water around Mystery Islands too! However, note that Pascal won’t show up there. It’s possible that some islands will have a higher chance of containing rare Sea Creatures, however.

The Problem With Animal Crossings Swimming Update
Having the option to swim in Animal Crossing;may seem cool at first, but as it turns out, it has serious implications for the trading economy in the game. With players being able to now freely jump into the sea, it means players can also jump off the airports pier and then swim to the nearest beach. Previously, players could erect fences around their islands airport to prevent strangers from running rampant and causing trouble on their turf. But now any fences are ineffective since players can just jump off the airport pier and head towards land. From there, the player can cause a variety of trouble on the other players island, from ruining their landscape to stealing dropped items and this is the problem.
Recently, Swap Shops have become a lucrative business in Animal Crossing, with players setting up makeshift storefronts to trade items they no longer need. There was already an issue with shoppers stealing items when the player hosting the swap shop wasnt looking, but now its even easier to commit an in-game crime with the number of players that can simply swim up to an island and wreak havoc. And its not only Swap Shops that are suffering. Unwanted island visitors have been known to steal all sorts of dropped items thanks to the new swimming update, leaving nothing safe.

Place Small Item Near Corner Cliff Edge
The fundamentals behind this glitch is that your character can climb up or down a cliff into this particular type of small item. Rather than being blocked from climbing as you would typically find with most items, youre able to climb right into it.
For this glitch to occur, the small item needs to be placed right up against the corner edge of a diagonal cliff piece either at the top of an elevated cliff or at the bottom next to one. You can see an example of each in the screenshot above.

Getting The Wet Suit In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Before players can get started, they will need to make sure their game is updated. Press the plus button on your Nintendo Switch on the main menu to check for the update. Provide at least 30 minutes for the game to update depending on your internet connection. Once the game has updated, start it up and head to your mailbox. There will be a letter from Nook Incorporated letting players know that the water is now safe for swimming. There will also be a present from Nintendo giving you a Snorkel and a Mask.
There are two places where players can get their Wet Suit. The first place is the Nook Stop. Players can exchange Nook Miles for their Wet Suit. The only issue is that players will have to wait until the next day to get the suit if they take this route. The fastest way to get the suit would be to go directly to Nooks Cranny and check the cabinet. The Wet Suit will cost 3,000 bells and comes with a basic instruction manual on how to use the suit. Keep in mind that the Wet Suit can not be equipped in the Wardrobe. It can only be equipped from the Inventory menu.
How Do You Swim Faster In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
To swim faster in;Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you need to tap the A button while pushing the left analog stick in the direction that you want to move.
While holding A does give you a slight speed boost, youre going to want to repeatedly tap A to move at the maximum speed. Your character will perform a breaststroke and move across the ocean with greater speed.
This method can also be used underwater. Dive under the water using Y and then rapidly tap A to catch up with your prey.
The tapping A method is not only useful for more efficient gathering of scallops and other resources, it can also be used to catch up with the most speedy of creatures. For example, we needed to tap A in order to catch a Snow Crab. Without this method, it would have proven very difficult indeed!
While spamming the A button might be a bit noisy, especially if you have clicky buttons like me, its definitely worth putting up with the noise for that additional boost in speed. Cover ground more quickly and nab those underwater creatures for your collection .
Being able to swim is just one of many changes implemented by the new patch. Whats more, theres yet another Summer Update scheduled to launch this August, which promises even more things to do.
Other recent changes to;Animal Crossing: New Horizons;include everyones favorite dog musician, K.K. Slider, now appearing on a different day.
