Diving In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
As you are swimming, you can tell your character to dive. In order to dive, press the Y button on the Joy-Con controller. If you are near the vicinity of a fish or sea creature or object, your character will automatically search for it and retrieve it.
To find sea creatures, look for bubbles or shadows when swimming. Try to bring your character as near as possible to the bubbles before pressing the Y button.
You can also allow your character to dive faster by tapping A button once its underneath the water.
Get A Wetsuit Dive And Find Sea Creatures Too
With an update to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in the summer of 2020, players are able to freely leave the shores and swim around their island. After obtaining a wetsuit, you can swim about and find a variety of sea creatures that you cannot find through fishing.

How Do You Swim Faster In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
To swim faster in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you need to tap the A button while pushing the left analog stick in the direction that you want to move.
While holding A does give you a slight speed boost, youre going to want to repeatedly tap A to move at the maximum speed. Your character will perform a breaststroke and move across the ocean with greater speed.
This method can also be used underwater. Dive under the water using Y and then rapidly tap A to catch up with your prey.
The tapping A method is not only useful for more efficient gathering of scallops and other resources, it can also be used to catch up with the most speedy of creatures. For example, we needed to tap A in order to catch a Snow Crab. Without this method, it would have proven very difficult indeed!
While spamming the A button might be a bit noisy, especially if you have clicky buttons like me, its definitely worth putting up with the noise for that additional boost in speed. Cover ground more quickly and nab those underwater creatures for your collection .
Being able to swim is just one of many changes implemented by the new patch. Whats more, theres yet another Summer Update scheduled to launch this August, which promises even more things to do.
Other recent changes to Animal Crossing: New Horizons include everyones favorite dog musician, K.K. Slider, now appearing on a different day.

How To Swim And Dive On Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Youll need to get yourself a wetsuit but once prepared, you can explore the vast ocean, search for pearls and new sea creatures to trade and collect! You might even meet Pascal the otter on your travels. Read on for the good stuff.
Look For Sea Creatures
Swimming and diving are fun diversions on their own, but New Horizons has also introduced a brand new page of the Critterpedia for players to uncover in the form of sea creatures. These can only be found out in the ocean, and players must dive underwater to find them.
As you swim, youll see plenty of sea creatures approaching without actually seeing which creatures they are. Youll know theyre near when you see an accumulation of bubbles dotting the waters surface, at which time you can submerge and enter the underwater world. The camera will shift to a more vertical position, allowing you to see a shadow underwater. Position your islander on top of this dark spot, and theyll nab the unknown object, subjecting you to a whole new set of puns.
To catch fish, youll have to act quickly, plunging into the deep blue waters after these elusive Sea Butterflies to snatch them up while theyre still within reach.

How To Swim Faster In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
To move in the water, you need to hold down the A button while pushing your stick in the direction you want to go. Your character will do a simple breaststroke, and if youre not in a rush, youll get where you want to be eventually. For those of us who value our time a little more, you can swim faster by repeatedly tapping the A button instead of just holding it for a more dynamic stroke.
These same controls apply when you dive underwater with the Y button hold A for a basic stroke, tap it repeatedly for a faster one. Just remember that, unlike the surface, you can only stay underwater for so long, so even if you can move faster down there, itd probably be prudent to get as close to your underwater target from the surface as possible before actually diving.
Can You Swim In Animal Crossing New Horizons
In past Animal Crossing games, specifically New Leaf, you were able to go to a special island to dive into the water to collect items. And, in New Horizons, the dive feature has returned, even though it wasnt available at launch.
As for how to swim, head on over to Nooks Cranny and buy the wetsuit for 3,000 bells. Once you have it, youll be able to swim around in the waters around the islands.
You can also cross rivers by using a vaulting pole that can be crafted and you can walk along the shoreline to pick up seashells and other items, but you cant actually jump into the water and splash about until you have the wetsuit.
Nintendo is known to add new content to existing games in the form of DLC or free updates, and this is one of those cases. Nintendo added the ability to swim in the water later down the line. So you no longer have to deal with staying inland while doing those menial chores we love doing so much.

How To Swim & Dive
The first time players purchase a wetsuit at Nook’s Cranny, Timmy or Tommy will explain the mechanics. To get in the water, players need to suit up, then walk to the edge of the shore and push A. Their character will ease into the water and then paddle in place. To move around, players need to keep pressing A and use the joystick to maneuver.
If players want a more dramatic entrance, they can jump off the airport dock, the pier or any of the rocks on their island. To get out of water, however, they must approach a sandy part of the shore players can’t climb onto a high surface, like the pier, when they’re in the water.
Occasionally, air bubbles will rise through the water, which indicates there’s a sea creature or some other goody players can dive to retrieve. After swimming into the vicinity of the air bubbles, players need to push Y to dive. Some creatures can move, so players will have to use their joycon to turn or follow the creature. Once players are positioned over their catch, they’ll grab it themselves and rise to the surface.
The Problem With Animal Crossings Swimming Update
Having the option to swim in Animal Crossing may seem cool at first, but as it turns out, it has serious implications for the trading economy in the game. With players being able to now freely jump into the sea, it means players can also jump off the airports pier and then swim to the nearest beach. Previously, players could erect fences around their islands airport to prevent strangers from running rampant and causing trouble on their turf. But now any fences are ineffective since players can just jump off the airport pier and head towards land. From there, the player can cause a variety of trouble on the other players island, from ruining their landscape to stealing dropped items and this is the problem.
Recently, Swap Shops have become a lucrative business in Animal Crossing, with players setting up makeshift storefronts to trade items they no longer need. There was already an issue with shoppers stealing items when the player hosting the swap shop wasnt looking, but now its even easier to commit an in-game crime with the number of players that can simply swim up to an island and wreak havoc. And its not only Swap Shops that are suffering. Unwanted island visitors have been known to steal all sorts of dropped items thanks to the new swimming update, leaving nothing safe.
