Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has finally arrived, and many players are wondering if this latest installment in the series has a quality multiplayer. While the multiplayer is great in many ways, it’s also unfortunately pretty flawed in others, and there are lots of improvements that could be made. Here’s our full analysis of the pros and cons of the multiplayer in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Each Session Will Have A Leader
Judging by the Nintendo Treehouse presentation that aired last year , each local co-op session will have a leader. This leader is indicated by a yellow flag above their head. Only the leader can enter and exit buildings , select items from their inventory, and move the screen camera along with them.
How To Set Up Party Play In Local Co
- Whenever multiple people inhabit one island, Tom Nook gives the players a new app called Call Resident, which allows for party play. To initiate party play, one person starts up the game and then selects from their NookPhone.
Select the players you want to play with.
- The person who set up Party Play becomes the leader. Wherever they go, the other players will follow.
Once the leader finds an area they want to explore, everyone can participate in a local activity.
If you want to change who the leader is, you can do so by shaking the Joy-Con or by opening the app and then having the new leader press the right button on their controller.

Press L & R To Synchronize
Once you’ve chosen accounts to play with, make sure to synchronize your Joy-Cons. This can be done by press the L & R buttons simultaneously.
Make Sure To Pair Joy-Cons
If you’re using Joy-Cons that have not been paired with the Switch yet, make sure to pair them first before trying to synchronize with the game.
Should Animal Crossing: New Horizons Allow Players To Have Multiple Islands
Animal Crossing is a game that has excelled in almost every category. The game has far exceeded expectations and has blown away every Nintendo Switch game that’s not named Mario Kart 8D.
In fact, in its lifetime , it’s been one of the best-selling games during that period. The game is not without flaws, though. Many players have some annoyances and truly no game is perfect and that includes Animal Crossing, as great as it is. One of the chief flaws in this groundbreaking game is the multiplayer.
Nintendo has some incredible couch multiplayer games like Mario Party, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros., to name a few. Animal Crossing isn’t designed to be a single player game, so why is the multiplayer so bad?
Hi, hello. Id love to hear from parents who are trying to manage multiple children on the same Animal Crossing island. What problems/surprises have you run into? How are the kids handling sharing? How is it helping with social distancing? DMs open!

Can I Visit Other Players’ Islands When They’re Not Online
Yes! Well, sort of. If they’ve uploaded their island to Nintendo’s servers and obtained a Dream Address, it’s possible to go to sleep and visit other people’s islands in your dreams.
That’s all for now, but let us know if you have any questions or multiplayer tips of your own in the comments. In the meantime, enjoy sharing your island with your besties!
Rayman Legends Definitive Edition
Ever since its initial launch way back in 2013, Rayman Legends has been serving up unadulterated platforming euphoria on just about every modern platform. On the Switch, couch co-op play is an absolute delight, and easy-as-heck to setup. Up to four friends can join your game at the touch of a Joy-Con, and mastering the game’s mechanics is just as intuitive.;
While an outstanding single-player platformer in its own right, Rayman Legends’ highly-inventive, colorful words are best experienced with a friend or two by your side, as you’ll be vocally cheering the team through the finish line. And if anyone falls victim to a challenge, they’ll simply float their way back to their team as a poppable bubble.

How Many Players Can Play Online Multiplayer And Local Co
Good news, everyone!
While the game’s controversial way of locking multiple users to the same island has caused a bit of ire from the community, you’ll be able to load your island up with your friends.
That’s because you can host four players locally , while you can host eight if playing online. That’s a busy island!
You’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to be able to play online, but if you don’t have it, you’ll be able to play in couch co-op.
That’s a good thing and allows players that share the island to play using one Joy-Con each. Simply open up the NookPhone in-game, and call your friend’s Islander.

Unique seasonal events like Bunny Day* also take place throughout the year, with special visitors and other activities really livening things up.
Followers Are Supporting Players
Players who are not leaders will be followers. They can support the leader and when they are off-screen, they will automatically be returned to the leader’s side.
Followers Have Limited Control
Followers will not be able to chat, use the Nookphone, or check their pockets. They can, however, use tools or move furniture around to help the leader out.

Theres A New Progression System
Without trying to sound too crass, Animal Crossing has always been about money to some degree. You move into a town, and youre then immediately saddled with debt that you have to work to pay off. New Horizons goes in a slightly different direction, one that changes the structure of the game.
The Nook Miles app is essentially a collection of quests. When you do things like catch a certain number of fish or collect a specific amount of twigs, youll earn miles that go toward paying off your travel package. From what Nintendo has shown, it looks like the goals will all be tied to things you do in the game anyway, making it a fairly natural progression system. However, its not clear if these miles can also be used to pay off future house upgrades, though you can also use them to visit mystery islands and unlock new gear.

How Do I Choose Best Friends
Playing Animal Crossing with your friends is fun, but playing with those registered as Best Friends is even better. After all, Best Friends will be able to use tools on your island such as shovels and axes to help you landscape. If a player isnt registered as a Best Friend, they cannot use these tools under any circumstances.
To register a visitor as a Best Friend youll need to:
- open up your Nook Phone and select the Best Friends app .
- From here you can sort through islanders whove visited your island and add them to the Best Friends category.
It’s worth knowing the difference between Friends and Best Friends and takingcare when playing online, especially with people who you don’t know. You wouldnt want to let untrustworthy players loose on your island, only to have them chop down every tree and dig a million holes. Nook and Isabelle would not be pleased!

How Does Animal Crossing Multiplayer Work
There are two main multiplayer modes, explains Kyogoku. One is similar to the legacy titles where youre able to visit other villages or have people come to visit your village. Youre able to visit other islands or have your friends visit you locally or online. Up to eight people can play on one island.
How To Message Friends
Here are the ACNH messaging features. Orville will give you both the Best Friends App and the Chat Log app when you ask to play Online.
Whether you have island visitors or are visiting an island yourself, you can use the Chat Log app to send messages to everyone as long as you’re on the island together. It’s basically a giant group text but your message also appears as a speech bubble above your head.
When you’re by yourself you can still send messages but ONLY to your Best Friends using the Best Friends App. You can ONLY send these messages when the recipient is online. Be sure to enable the communication feature by opening the Best Friends List app and hitting the .

How Do I Use Dodo Codes
Worried about who youre bringing to your precious island? If youre sending out invitations to players who arent on your Switchs friends list , you may want to use the Dodo Code system. Dodo Codes prevent just anyone from hopping on a plane and heading over to your island, and can be used for both Local Play and Online Play. Essentially, only players who know your private code can visit your island.
If you want to work through Dodo Codes, simply choose the Invite via Dodo Code option whilst talking to Orville at Dodo Airlines. Hell give you a five-digit Dodo Code you can pass on to trusted friends, and they in turn can present the code to Orville wholl sort everything else.
When Multiple Players Live On One Island Does Everyone Have Access To The Same Places And Items
There are some tasks on the island that the Resident Representative must complete before the related features will be open to other players. For example, only the Resident Representative can receive and set up Blathers museum tent. Once the tent is in place, all island residents can donate items to the museum.
It is not possible to reassign the Resident Representative role to another player. If certain places or items in the game arent available for island residents, have the Resident Representative progress to the point where the item or feature is available for them, then try again.

Can You Play Couch Co
Animal Crossing New Horizons supports local co-op. This means that you can play with friends using the same screen, a first for the series. This opens up a lot of possibilities, though from what weve seen in promotional material there might be some limitations imposed on what players can do while playing local co-op. Lets dive deeper.
There Are No Cloud Saves
Much like other big Nintendo franchises like Pokémon and Splatoon, the new Animal Crossing wont support cloud saves via the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. The reasoning isnt clear, though Nintendo does say that its planning some kind of recovery service for those who lose their game file due to lost or damaged consoles.

How Do I Take Part In Couch Co
You might think that every player needs their own Switch and copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons to utilise multiplayer, but there is actually a way to play with your family and friends on one console. You can do it via a mode called Party Play.
Firstly, the basics. Up to eight people can live on one island , and up to four of these cohabitants can take part in Party Play sessions at once.
Heres how to set it up.
- Load the game and, using the Nook Phone, select the Call Islander app. You’ll only have this when you have multiple islanders on the island on your Switch. That means loading up the game with a second player account once the island has been established.
- Youll be able to summon any of the other villagers living on that Switchs island to your gameplay session.
- A quick controller recalibration and youre all set to start playing together on one screen.
During Party Play one resident will be designated as the ‘leader’ with the other players playing as followers. Leaders can play as normal; select tools, open their inventory and collect fallen fruit or wood. Followers are limited to cycling through their tool sets one at a time and are unable to interact with items on the ground.
However, swapping between leaders and followers requires only the flick of the Joy-Con controller. A simple prompt will then appear allowing a new player to take on the role of leader.
Do You Need A Nintendo Online Subscription For Animal Crossing
Animal Crossing doesnt require a subscription to Nintendo Online to play by yourself or to play with friends in the same room, but you cant play with friends via the internet without a subscription. If you have a Nintendo Online subscription, you can use Dodo Airlines to visit your friends’ islands via the internet and invite your friends to your island.
