Co-op, also called Party Play, is the easiest multiplayer mode to start in New Horizons, but it is also the most limiting. Even though eight people can live on one New Horizons island, only four can play co-op simultaneously on the same system.
The first thing to do is, obviously, have more than one player living on an island.
The first Switch account that sets up on an island is the official representative, which is New Horizons‘ version of a mayor. Others who join the session can leave the island if they want to and don’t have the same decision-making powers as the representative.
After a second person joins the island, Tom Nook gives you the feature for the NookPhone. It doesn’t matter who gets it first because it automatically gets installed on every islander’s NookPhone.

Finally, the other form of communication in ACNH is good ol’ fashion mail! Just head to Dodo Airlines and interact with the card stand on the right of Orville. From here you can send a letter to another resident , your future self, or any friend! They’ll get the letter shortly after.

Couch Multiplayer Local Co
To use Party Play to play local multiplayer couch co-op in Animal Crossing New Horizons, you have to use the Call Islander app on your NookPhone. However, you can only call the above-mentioned up-to-eight people living on the same island. You can call up to three people to play with. If youre the one making the call, youll be the leader by default, and the others followers. You can swap leaders at any time, though.
We have to mention now that New Horizons does not offer split-screen. Instead, the camera will always focus on the leader. If one of the followers strays too far behind, theyll pop back into existence next to the leader. Also, only the leader has the privilege of shopping. As for all the stuff that followers find, theyll go straight into the Recycling Box in Resident Services, where they can later be picked up again.
How To Play Co
To play Animal Crossing New Horizons in co-op multiplayer, there are two avenues that you can pursue. The first one is local, couch multiplayer, or Party Play. You can have up to eight players living on the same island, and four of those players can play together at the same time. Since were talking couch co-op, all of this takes place on one system, with presumably just one copy of the game.
The other option is to play New Horizons in online multiplayer. Once again, up to eight players can live and play together. It has to be just one players island, of course. You can play online either through local wireless, or full-on online multiplayer with people all across the globe. Lets explain how each of these methods work.

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you have the opportunity to share your residence with other players. You have the option to have other players directly jump into your game from your Nintendo Switch, or invite them over while playing online. You will need access to Nintendos online subscription if you want to engage in the online multiplayer experience.
For those playing from a single Nintendo Switch, you can have from two to four players engaged in local co-op. Opinion: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Local Co
I was the first person to play Animal Crossing: New Horizons in my house. I didnt realize the power that would be bestowed upon me as the islands primary resident representative. Now that my spouse and kid are enjoying the game and playing more than me weve discovered New Horizons frustrating limits on local co-op, holding back an otherwise endlessly endearing family game.
The first and biggest limitation is that every local player using the same Switch must share an island. Each player can use their own Nintendo accounts and set up their own homes. But they end up on the same island that the original player, the resident rep, chose at the beginning.
To play local co-op, each player will need to start the game on their account, set up their starter tent, and unlock the Call Resident app. From there, a player can use Call Resident in the Nook Phone menu to add a local player to the session. The player who started first will be the Leader. Only the Leader can talk to islanders, craft objects, and access their inventory. Players can switch leaders by going back to the Call Resident screen, or by shaking their Joy Con.
Sharing an island automatically creates several problems that online players with rowdy friends may have discovered other players chopping down trees, destroying rocks, and otherwise harvesting all of your resources and altering the island.

When you want to play together on your island, fire up the NookPhone, and choose the option. It sends out a call for other players to join in the fun, but the one who makes the call is the leader for that co-op session.
