How Will Amiibo Work In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The developers weren’t ready to share that information just yet from the GameKult interview. All they have stated is that the game will have amiibo support.
In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, using amiibo would summon animal villagers to visit your town or move into your town , as long as there is space available for them to do so. Since they did not explicitly state what amiibo will do in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it could have the same functionality as New Leaf, or be completely different. We won’t know for sure until more information is released.
Where To Buy Animal Crossing Amiibo Cards
Across four series, there have been 400 Animal Crossing amiibo cards released in total. In these sets, youll find a whole host of animal villagers who can take up residence in your town or drop by as special visitors. A special set of 50 Animal Crossing: New Leaf cards were also released that brought back many absent villagers.
As there are so many to collect, wed definitely advise you using the online Animal Crossing catalogue to keep track of your collection. Even more so because the cards in each pack are random so it could take some time to gather a complete set. Its a problem made even worse by the general lack of availability.
To help this, a few enterprising folks have taken to creating their own Animal Crossing amiibo cards. These unofficial cards function exactly the same as Nintendos own but are smaller, far cheaper and more widely available. Plus, hundreds of reviews show they work perfectly well so it could be a much easier way to build your collection.
Remember, though, that these are not produced or endorsed by Nintendo so if you run into any issues youll have to deal with the sellers directly to sort a refund or replacement. Understanding the demand, Nintendo may print more Animal Crossing amiibo card packs in the future if youre willing to wait.
How To Invite Villagers To The Campsite Using Amiibo
Now that you’ve unlocked the ability to use amiibo cards, it’s time to learn how to scan them in and convince campers to move into your island. You’re going to have to scan a villager’s card multiple days in a row if you want them to become a resident of your island. Here are the steps needed to acquire a new villager using amiibo cards.
Select invite a Camper.
Scan the amiibo card you want to use. If you’re playing your Switch in handheld mode, hover the card over the joystick on the right Joy-Con when New Horizons prompts you to use your amiibo. If you’re using the Pro Controller, scan the cards over the Nintendo logo in the top middle of the controller when the game prompts you to use your amiibo.
After scanning your card, a cutscene will play, showing the invited camper. When you leave Resident Services, the villager you invited will be at your campsite. Run to your campsite and enter the tent.
Agree to their request. They might even give you a new recipe in the processes.
The camper is closer to being persuaded, but they won’t be ready to move in just yet. The following day repeat steps 1 – 9.

What Do The Animal Crossing Amiibo And Amiibo Cards Unlock In New Horizons
Essentially, the main feature of amiibo in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is to unlock those islanders in the new Photopia mode where they can be used as models in your own photoshoots.
As for the Animal Crossing amiibo cards, they will actually allow those characters you scan to be invited as residents to your island. Its quite a way to grow the population especially with the hundreds of amiibo cards that are available to collect!
For more info, our pals over at Eurogamer have a comprehensive guide on the Animal Crossing: New Horizons amiibo support. Wed encourage you to check that out for a more detailed breakdown of how and where theyre used in-game.
How To Unlock And Use Amiibo In Animal Crossing New Horizons
As we described above, Amiibo in New Horizons can be used in two ways – to invite characters to your island, or to use them in Photopia. Both are used in different ways, and both unlock at different times. Here’s the nice, simple breakdown:
- To use Amiibo to invite characters to your island:
- Once unlocked, the option to use amiibo to invite characters to your island will be found within the Resident Services building on your island, the same ATM-style machine that you use to spend Nook Miles to unlock more inventory space and use the Nook mail-order delivery shopping service.
- Once the option appears, you simply press it and tap and amiibo to the right Joy-Con as you do in other games.
- If the option hasn’t appeared to you yet, note our wording: the Resident Services building. It needs to be a building rather than just a tent, and you also need to have established the camp site. Basically, it’s tied to the Tom Nook basic progression through building up your island. If the amiibo option isn’t yet there, you need to go to Tom Nook and ask him what you need to do next – keep following his instructions and expanding the island, and this feature will eventually appear. Nook will alert you when it does.
- Amiibo you can use here are of course limited: characters that can’t become residents won’t work, and characters already on the island might trigger a funny scene.

How to Use amiibo Cards / Figures
- Scan Animal Crossing amiibo figures to invite them to the Campground area in the game.
- Scan Animal Crossing amiibo cards to invite the pictured character to come to your town.
- Scan select non-Animal Crossing amiibo figures to access new furniture items unique to those characters.
How To Unlock The Campground
The Campground is an area you can create that will allow you to receive visiting villagers on your island, where you can then begin to convince them to stay and live in your town – or you can simply talk and trade with them.
To build the Campground, you must have first upgraded the Resident Services Tent into a proper building . Once completed, Tom Nook will have an assignment to increase your towns popularity to catch a certain someones attention. The first step towards this, will be building a Campground.
You will need to build the Campground Construction Kit, which requires 15 of each type of wood, as well as 15 Iron Nuggets, and then place the kit down in an area youd like to designate as a campground.
The next day, a random villager will likely appear in the Campground . Whichever villager, you will have no choice but to invite them into your town. After that, villagers may appear at the Campground at any time, but can also be summoned using Amiibo Cards at the Resident Services Terminal.

The Amiibo Figures Vs The Amiibo Cards
There are over 400 Animal Crossing amiibo that you can use if you count the 18 NFC figures and the hundreds of Animal Crossing amiibo cards. Both the figures and the cards feature NFC chips and get scanned the same way using your Nintendo Switch. However, in New Horizons, the amiibo cards are more useful since they allow you to invite new villagers to your island. The amiibo figures are fun to collect, but they can only be used to invite the unique characters they depict to photoshoot sessions while you’re on Harvey’s Island.
If you have your heart set on inviting a specific villager to your island, you might want to scour eBay for a particular Animal Crossing amiibo card as many sellers will let you buy them individually. But be warned. Some of the more popular villagers’ amiibo cards are incredibly pricey.
A full list of Animal Crossing amiibo cards can be found on Animal Crossing’s official website.
How Do Amiibo Cards Work

By tapping them into the game, the character the figure or card is based on will appear on your island. You can then invite them to Photopia, an island where you can model and have creative photo shoots with them.

When Will Animal Crossing: New Horizons Get Zelda Characters
In every previous Animal Crossing installment, there have been nods to the Legend of Zelda series. Either through items or sneaky dialogue. In Animal Crossing: Wild World, players could even find the Master Sword that came complete with sound effects. However, the Legend of;Zelda amiibo;currently don’t work for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but this doesn’t necessarily mean a crossover won’t happen eventually.
In March of 2021 Nintendo released a set of Super; items for Animal Crossing: New Horizons as part of the 35th anniversary celebration for the Super; series. Players can order these Super-themed items from the Nook Shopping app on their in-game phone, and stock up on 1-Up Mushrooms or dress up as Princess Peach. However, another huge Nintendo franchise – The Legend of Zelda – is also celebrating its 35th;anniversary this year, even though Nintendo has yet to pay it much mind.
Released on February 21st, 1986, The Legend of Zelda turned 35 this year, and fans were disappointed by Nintendo’s lack of fanfare. So far, the only release in this series set for 2021 is a remake of Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which is set for July.;Though it is strange that Nintendo didn’t release Legend of Zelda items for the 35th anniversary, it seems only a matter of time before Animal Crossing: New Horizons will see a Legend of Zelda update.

Inviting Visitors To Your Island Campsite Via Amiibo
How do you invite amiibo characters to your island? Ah, the Golden Trout of amiibo questions. And just like catching a Golden Trout, this one takes some patience.
In order to invite your favourite characters directly to your island in full interactive glory, you must first build a campsite. Once you’ve got a functioning campsite, you must wait for one random camper to visit . We recommend going through the motions to have them move onto your island – not only does this help move the game forward, but we’re fairly certain it’s required in order to access amiibo functionality for your campsite.
After going through this process, Tom Nook should mention to you that amiibo functionality has been added to the Nook Stop kiosk. The next time your campsite is empty, head to Nook Stop and scan in one of your favorite villagers – immediately after which, they should appear at your campsite. It should be noted that only one villager can visit your campsite per day.
Which amiibo can be invited to the campsite? Again, not all amiibo can be invited to camp on your island. Most of the general and “Welcome Amiibo” cards can be invited. Below are the amiibo which cannot be invited:
- Non-Animal Crossing-specific amiibo
- Villager from Smash
- Sanrio “Welcome Amiibo” cards
- Special character figures and cards
