Animal Crossing: New Horizons Who Is This Game For Anyway
Many people who are unfamiliar with the Animal Crossing series have been exposed a little more to it thanks to the many memes depicting a little yellow dog named Isabelle and the guy from Doom. I’m not entirely sure if it’s due to these hilariously charming memes, but it seems to me like the hype for the upcoming Animal Crossing: New Horizons game on Nintendo Switch is much higher than it’s been for previous AC titles and has drawn in a lot of new eyes, including my own.
Through the years, I’ve had multiple friends tell me how much they love AC, but whenever I saw gameplay, it looked like an utterly boring way for me to spend my time. You see, I’m much more driven by competition and plot when it comes to video games, and AC doesn’t provide much of either of those things. However, the internet’s reaction to New Horizons gave me pause and made me want to take another look at the series. Cause, if that many people loved it, maybe I was missing out on something.
After spending several hours playing previous AC games, the series has really grown on me. However, I’ll be the first to say that the upcoming Switch game is definitely not going to be of interest for everyone despite what some dedicated fans will tell you. So here’s a break down of AC from someone who’s recently been exposed to the series for the first time, along with my opinion for what kind of players will actually enjoy it.

With New Horizons coming to Switch, the fanbase of the series was super exited. But would have thought the game would be so welcome when it was released during a difficult time for many people.
There never was never a time before like our current situation, where face to face contact is a no-no, distance is needed and safety and staying at home is key. But, cant go outdoors and you really need a change of scenery? What better way then retreat to a tropical island and meet up with friends .
Its almost like Tom Nook had the foresight and business insight that an island getaway is much appreciated right now.
Best Animal Crossing Games Of All Time
Since launching back in March, it seems like half the planet has been enjoying Animal Crossing: New Horizons at some time or other. Nintendo’s serene life sim series has a habit of becoming a part of your daily routine like doing your teeth or walking the dog. Consequently, it etches itself into your brain remembering your first Animal Crossing will likely bring to mind non-gaming memories and milestones, too.
Which Animal Crossing game is the best, then? The fact that these games embed themselves in your life makes that a very tough question indeed. You don’t play Animal Crossing like you do other games – you live with it, almost like a person.

Escape the rat race for tranquility, honest work, and a chance at love in the countryside
Nintendo finally gave Animal Crossing fans what they wanted at last years E3: a release date and title for the next entry in the fantastic village simulation series. And now here we are, basking in the aftermath of one of Nintendos most successful launches. A Nintendo Switch isnt free though, and its price tag can be hard to justify if youre only planning on getting New Horizon to while away weeks or months of self-isolation. Sometimes we cant live our best lives.
But fortunately for PC players , there are plenty of games on PC that replicate what Animal Crossing does pretty well. If youre looking for a little balm for an AC-less summer, look no further weve listed six of the best alternatives on our platform below.
So, grab your shovel for fossil hunting, a net to catch those bugs catching, and a creative attitude for interior decorating: Animal Crossing provides a unique approach to relaxation and these PC games do a damn fine job following in its footsteps.
Issue : The Illusion Of Content
One of the original draws to Animal Crossings: New Horizons was the promise of plenty of updates. While we did experience one or two larger updates that brought us a new museum wing and dream islands, most of the other updates were small or seasonal. Sometimes we got a new emote, and other times we got holidays with… very similar objectives. Regardless of the holiday, players had to gather a MacGuffin, whether it was eggs, feathers, or other ingredients, hand it off to an NPC, and that’s pretty much it.
Even the way the game works is an illusion of having more to do. You start with a tent, work your way up to a huge house, and unlock terraforming. Really, what you’re working towards is the ability to form your island any way you want, but what do you do after you customize it just the way you want? You could start over and do something new, and there are plenty of players who love rearranging and redecorating.
Updates add new items, so there are always new ways to set up your island but that’s it. It can get pretty boring if you’ve hit five stars and have a full museum. As someone who likes their island the way it is aside from the occasional rearrange, I wish there was just more to do. Plus, it all just feels like an anti-climatic endgame goal.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf
New Leaf for the 3DS might have been the first game to ever match the level of innovation and outright wonder of the first Animal Crossing
Instead of a regular-old villager fallen into indentured service for the capitalist tanooki Tom Nook, youre the Mayor of your town!
Not only that, but you have the cutest secretary known to humankind Isabelle.
Its a dream life!
The art style was also updated to become not only cuter, but more expressive, and the graphics were terrific on Nintendos powerful handheld.
Another great feature was the addition of detailed character customization, which should have probably been done earlier for a game focused on giving everyone a personalized experience. Decorating your home became much more in-depth as well! And there was even a later update which added even more stuff into AC: New Leaf, stuff that would draw in long-time fans.
Couple all of this with a soothing, beautiful soundtrack, and you can begin to understand how this became one of the 3DSs best-selling games.
Not to mention this title earned the Villager a place in SSB. Ultimates roster.

Animal Crossing: City Folk
Animal Crossing: City Folk was one of the most anticipated titles in the year of its release.
Not only was it the successor to the well-loved AC: Wild World on the NDS, but its metropolitan title and position as the first AC on the Wii were enough to drive fans wild with speculation.
Regrettably, the fever dreams of excited fans failed to materialize once the game was released. Despite being called City Folk, the city plays a pretty small role in the overall gameplay experience. Serving as a glorified marketplace rather than the new setting for the game.
Still fun? Definitely, I mean it feels like a classic AC game.
But instead of a detailed cityscape we got an improved AC: Wild World. Which is pretty good in and of itself, to be fair. I do think its adorable art style also looked gorgeous on the Wii, and the game was full of things to do, just like the first two titles.
And funny enough, this was the first game to consider the players location to reflect real-world seasons in-game. You could be locked in due to a heavy snow day, boot up the game, and see the snow falling in your village too. This was just mind-blowing.
I do recommend giving this a try for sure, but its a tough toss-up between WW & City Folk.
What Is Animal Crossing About
The central premise of every AC game is that your character comes to a new town or city and attempts to build a new home and develop friendships with your animal villagers. You get a loan from Tom Nook, a tanooki with wads of money. You’ll be in debt to him for the majority of the game as you work to pay off your house and make upgrades to your living situation.
As far as day-to-day gameplay goes, you basically do a lot of mundane chores that you wouldn’t want to do in real life, but somehow it becomes satisfying within the game. For instance, you can run around your village pulling all of the weeds, talk to every villager in an attempt to return a lost item, remodel your home, plant flowers, go fishing, plan new village facilities, sneak up on bugs, decorate your home, rearrange your furniture, and sell everything that you can get your grubby little hands on to the local used goods store.
This seemed so boring to me when I first started playingNew Leaf on my 3DS that I initially turned the game off shortly after starting it, never intending to play again. However, a few days later, I decided to force myself to continue, and a strange thing happened I found myself enjoying this simple village life.

Stranded Sails: Explorers Of The Cursed Islands
Available on: PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, iOS
Like Animal Crossing: New Horizons this game sees you building a new life on an island, but the main difference here is that you’ve arrived by shipwreck, rather than Dodo Airlines. You’re in charge of setting up camp for you and your fellow survivors, farming crops to feed the masses, and ultimately trying to build a ship to escape. Work with your fellow castaways and they’ll give you side quests, which are the perfect excuse to explore and interact with the various flora and fauna. Unlike the serene world of Animal Crossing, Stranded Sails is home to some supernatural nasties you’ll need to face, and that whole “cursed” thing is a worry. At least you’ll have the soothing sounds of the waves to help keep your anxiety at bay.

New Horizons received universal acclaim. Reviewers praised the game’s “chilled out” and relaxing atmosphere. As with previous installments, New Horizons offers player control and creativity but with better graphics. It cannot be denied that the pandemic played a significant role in the game’s success.
