Most Common: Crucian Carp
Likely one of the first species of fish new villagers encountered after stepping foot on their new islands, the Crucian Carp is a painfully common creature which most veteran Animal Crossing players are all too familiar with. They’re available 24/7, all year long. Be it the dead of winter or the dog days of summer, anglers fishing in a river are likely to pull up at least a few of these things.
Not only are they aggressively plain-looking fish, but they’re also basically worthless. In fact, with an asking price of 160 bells, they’re actually the second-cheapest fish in the game.
Most Common: Sea Anemone
Perhaps most remembered for the adorable mispronunciation in Pixar’s Finding Nemo movie, the sea anemone’s charms lessen each and every time we dredge it up from the depth of the ocean.
Though it’s technically a sea creature and not a fish, we couldn’t resist adding this annoying bit of marine biology to the list, as we pull a few of these things up each and every time we go exploring away from shore. They’re available all year round all day long, and they only fetch 500 bells, so bringing one back to dry land is hardly worth it.

Fish To Catch In April
As mentioned above, fish will come and go out of season in Animal Crossing. For players in the Northern Hemisphere, April sees the arrival of a bunch of new fish and aquatic life, including the elusive Snapping Turtle. This is also the last month to catch the rare and valuable Blue Marlin and Tuna, which both go out of season in May, so hit up that pier while you still have the chance!
Players in the Southern Hemisphere will see the arrival of two new fish and will have to work diligently to catch the over half a dozen that will be going out of season after the month is up. See a more comprehensive list of what’s coming and going in April in our guides below.
Every Fish In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The list below contains the time of year, time of day, location, shadow size, and price for every fish in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This is divided into two separate tables, as the months of the year will be different for each hemisphere.
There are three types of environments for fish on the island: sea , river, and pond. The river is further split into three categories–river mouth, river clifftop, and general river–and the sea also includes the more specific pier location, which is the wooden pier somewhere on your island . Fish like salmon can only be found at the river mouth, which is where the river meets the ocean, while others, like the cherry salmon, can only be found at parts of the river on your island’s cliffs, for example.
Fish come in a few different sizes, and each type of fish appears as the same size shadow each time. The shadow sizes are: extra small , small , medium , large , extra large , and giant . Longer, skinnier shadows in the ocean are eels, which can be caught like any other fish, and some shadows will also appear with a fin on top, signaling a shark or other rare, finned fish. You can use our chart and the tables below to help determine the size of a fish’s shadow and which fish it might be.

Rarest Fish In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
At its core, every entry in the Animal Crossing franchise has been about making new friends, honing decorating skills, and raking in bells. New Horizons, which came out last year and completed its one-year anniversary just a few days back, is no different.
The premise of the game is similar to the previous titles; however, certain aspects of the game, including custom designs and critters, are rather distinct.
Each month brings in new critters, and similarly, the end of each month also means that certain fish, bugs, and deep-sea creatures won’t make their way to the island for a long time.
Selling rare critters, including rare fish in Animal Crossing, gets players a good amount of bells. Catching these rare fish is no easy task. Players have to spend a good deal of their time searching for these, which are sometimes found only during specific hours in the day.
On the flip side, certain species of fish are easily available, and while these might help Animal Crossing players in completing their critterpedia, they don’t sell for a lot.

Most Common: Horse Mackerel
The least expensive and most common fish one could possibly pluck out of the ocean, the horse mackerel is sure to have most Animal Crossing players rolling their eyes. Netting a meager 150 bells, these things aren’t even worth occupying an inventory slot.
Available at all hours of the day all year round, Horse Mackerels seem to infest the seas and make fishing a far more arduous task than it already is. In fact, given how tough it can be to decipher;if that submerged shadow is or is not a Horse Mackerel, we’re almost tempted to give up altogether and go bug hunting, instead.

Spotting a large shadow when out swimming in the ocean is often a good sign, as most larger sea creatures bring in a respectable sum of bells, and one of the most desirable large sea creatures of all would have to be the Gigas Giant Clam.

Before you can learn how to catch a fish in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, youll first need to craft yourself a Flimsy Fishing Rod. If you havent done this yet, be sure to read through our guide where we explain how to craft a Fishing Rod in Animal Crossing: New Horizons!
With your Fishing Rod crafted, open your inventory and select the Fishing Rod, then select the option to Hold it. Cast your line;in front of;the fish by pressing the A button and wait for the fish to start nibbling. The line has to be in front of the fish or it won’t notice it.
If the fish doesnt notice, you can reel your line back by pressing A again, then try moving and casting it in a different spot. With your line cast, youll need to wait for the fish to take notice and approach the line. This is where things get a little tricky. Youll need to make sure the fish isnt just testing the line first by bumping into it and backing away.
It can take a few tries to get the timing right, but once you do, youll be on your way towards becoming a fishing expert in Animal Crossing: New Horizons!

Animal Crossing New Horizons: How To Catch A Whale Shark
Here’s what you need to know about catching this massive animal.
One of the biggest fish you can capture in Animal Crossing: New Horizons;is the whale shark, a massive creature thats found in the ocean around your island.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the whale shark can be captured from June to September. As reported by Prima Games,;it appears in the Southern Hemisphere from December to March. The whale shark can be captured at any time of day.
While many aquatic animals appear as standard silhouettes of various sizes, the whale shark is a bit different, as its silhouette has a fin that sticks up out of the water. Unfortunately, there are multiple creatures that have this fin, so when you spot one sticking out of the water, its not guaranteed to be a whale shark. However, looking for the fin can help you narrow it down.
Remember, if you want to speed up the process of spawning and capturing fish, there are a couple of things you can do. For instance, if you see a silhouette that doesnt match the fish you want to capture, you can run along the waters edge to make it disappear, which will allow another fish to spawn in its place.
You can also use Fish Bait to cause fish to instantly appear in the water. Theres no guarantee a whale shark will appear when you toss a Fish Bait into the water, but it cant hurt to try!
And there you have it! Have fun tracking down this massive creature!
