Animal Crossing: A History
For most of the world, Animal Crossing on the GameCube is seen as the first installment of the series. On an international scale, youd be correct. Japan, on the other hand, had a different experience. Animal Crossing was initially developed for the Nintendo 64 DD due to its increased storage and the real-time clock, which was part of the system. Extended delays meant the game would have to be kept on the original Nintendo 64 and have a real-time clock integrated into the game cartridge. Known as Dobutsu no Mori, or Animal Forest in English, the game became a hit in Japan and would re-release with additional features on the GameCube.;Even China got a taste of Animal Crossing through the iQue Player, they just had to wait until 2006.
While shifting and changing the features of Animal Crossing through its different titles, the essence of the game has remained true. Katsuya Eguchi, the creator of the series, realized the importance of community and family when he moved by himself to work for Nintendo, and thats where his idea grew. Animal Crossings world is designed as an escape from reality while still retaining a sense of community, whether youre building your town together with your family, or returning every day for a quick chat with your quirky neighbors. Whatever the next installment brings to the series, as long as it continues to show the magic of the original then well all be lining up to play.

A cute and laid-back Animal Crossing alternative for your mobile device.
The Animal Crossing series already has a mobile installment, called Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, so if youve gone as far as you can in New Horizons and you just want something similar on your phone, you dont need to look any further. But if youre sick of the Animal Crossing universe and want to shake things up without straying too far from the formula, we recommend Seabeard. Most games like this are freemium appsyou can download and play them for free, but optional extras and conveniences will cost you. In this case, during certain actions youre subject to lengthy wait periods that exist solely to annoy you into paying to skip ahead. But Seabeards paywalls arent the worst offenders compared with similar titles, and its an enjoyable game with cute artwork and activities like those in Animal Crossing. As with any game that has in-app purchases, though, be sure your parental-control settings dont allow for purchases before you hand the game to a kid.
The entire game can be played in portrait modeand at many times, with only one handwhich makes it more appealing to pick up in free moments throughout the day.

Dragon Quest Builders 2
Released: December 10, 2019 | Steam
One of the best new features about Animal Crossing: New Horizons is its crafting system. You can now harvest resources from a variety of sources and use them to make furniture, build housing for island newcomers, or sell for a tidy profit. It’s a lot like Dragon Quest Builders 2, a Minecraft-inspired spin-off of Square Enix’s classic Dragon Quest RPGs that finally made its way to PC a few months ago.
Unlike Animal Crossing, Dragon Quest Builders 2 emphasizes combat and explorationbut neither is especially demanding or punishing. Enemies will periodically attack and destroy parts of your village, though, which might be too stressful if you’re looking to just relax and build. Despite that, both games have a lot in common because you’ll spend hours humming and hawing over every little aspect of your village and how best to use those foraged materials to benefit other characters. Each games’ Japanese origins bleed through in their cartoonish sensibilities, making them really good companions to one another. Sure, your villagers might not be adorable animals , but the dialogue is surprisingly witty and encourages you to always take the time to say hello.

A Hint Of Japanese Culture
As someone who is not knowledgeable on the intricacies of Japanese culture and mythology, its easy to gloss over some of the references made in the Animal Crossing series. Our good friend, Tom Nook, is actually supposed to resemble a tanuki rather than a typical raccoon. Even his name sounds suspiciously familiar. Tanuki are often represented in modern Japanese folklore as mischievous and cheerful, quite a fitting description for our favorite shopkeeper. Another NPC, Crazy Redd, although less likeable, also reflects a taste of Japanese mythology. For most, hes simply an untrustworthy fox, while in Japanese stories he would be seen as a sneaky kitsune. Kitsune often have a refined ability to trick others, and with his illicit paintings and over-priced items, Crazy Redd certainly fits the bill.

What Is Animal Crossing And Why Is It So Special
For someone whos had no exposure to the Animal Crossing series, it can be difficult to describe exactly what type of game it is. Harder still is to make it sound as appealing as all fans find the game to be. Its a life simulation game, but its not comparable to The Sims. Designing a room in Fantasy Life is reminiscent of Animal Crossing, but the rest of the game has minimal similarities. Even Harvest Moon, a game that is often recommended to those who love Animal Crossing, still doesnt possess the same game play and magic. Although a hard sell on paper, its unique community-based tasks and relaxing mechanics has managed to strike a chord with its player base since its inception.
When you first enter your town in Animal Crossing, you soon find that youre the only human in a village full of animals. Youre never given a precise goal to achieve in the game, but you still have plenty of hobbies to take up and neighbors to befriend. Players can go fishing, catch bugs, and dig up fossils to donate to the museum . You have a home to renovate both by increasing size and adding new rooms, as well as decorating the interior. But all of the game mechanics and fun things you can do in the game arent what makes Animal Crossing, Animal Crossing. Writing a what you can do list makes the game seem almost like a chore simulator, hardly something that would keep you enthralled. Yet the game is renowned for its charm, and keeps you sinking more hours into it every day.

Building With Friends: Parkitect
Price: $30 at the time of publicationESRB rating: not rated
A game with more activities to do together, for people who love showing off their Animal Crossing islands to friends online.
If you painstakingly terraform and decorate your island in Animal Crossing so you can proudly give tours of it to your friends, building and sharing your own theme park in Parkitect is a good next choice. Many of us at Wirecutter remember RollerCoaster Tycoon fondly, and Parkitect is practically a modern-day clone of the best of the early-2000s series. The multiplayer mode, which lets up to eight people work on the same park in real time, is the standout feature for anyone who likes the more social aspects of Animal Crossing. You can either work on the same project together or take on your own area of the park. This is a game for PCs, but the system requirements are pretty minimal, so it should run well on most computers without leaving anyone out just because they dont have a gaming computer. The gameplayfrom placing decorations to constructing rideswas smooth for me in multiplayer mode. The in-game tools and building mechanics did involve a learning curve, though, and I recommend utilizing the tutorials in single-player mode before you hop online with a group.

The Best Pc Games That Are Like Animal Crossing
For many, Animal Crossing: New Horizons couldn’t have come at a better time. Released on the Nintendo Switch last week, this serene little life sim is like a vacation: A retreat from the outside world to a virtual island to explore, make friends with cute anthropomorphic animals, and craft a little dream cottage. It’s a game full of warm, good-natured fun, and it is, tragically, not available on PC.
It’s a shame that there’s no game on PC exactly like Animal Crossing in the way it blends chores, decorating, and socializing. Still, you don’t have to suffer FOMO from seeing everyone share their cute island getaways online. Here’s some great Animal Crossing alternatives to check out on PC.
Four Games To Play If Youre Burned Out On Animal Crossing
