How To Get Art And Unlock Jolly Redd’s Treasure Trawler

Redd wasn’t included in Animal Crossing: New Horizons at launch, but he was added with the game’s first major update last April. If you’re new to the game and haven’t yet unlocked Redd’s visits, here’s how to do so.

In order for Redd to begin visiting your island, you’ll need a museum with an art wing. To unlock the Museum building, you’ll first need to donate five critters to Tom Nook when he asks for them .

Tom Nook then gets in touch with his old pal Blathers, who’ll set up a base camp from which to study your island’s natural history. Give Blathers a further 15 critters after he asks for them and he’ll decide to make your island his new home, and begin construction on a museum.

Once the museum is built, donating a further 40 critters and/or fossils to Blathers will lead him to make the following announcement: a new fine art wing is being planned. There’s no time limit on any of this, by the way, so don’t stress if it takes you a little while to find 60 unique donations.

After announcing his plan for the new exhibit, Blathers will ask you to keep an eye out for art to put on display, and to bring him any you find.

Now wait until the next day and look around your island. You should find a new visitor the sneaky orange fox, Redd. Hes managed to drop his crazy moniker from previous games, but hes no less wily.

That means itll be closed for a full day while renovations take place.

When Does Redd Visit Your Island

Animal Crossing: New HorizonsEverything You Need To Know ...

After speaking to him the first time, donating his first painting and starting the museum expansion, Redd will always visit on the first day the museum reopens. However, Redd doesn’t appear on a set schedule for subsequent visits .

However, dataminer on Twitter has looked at the code governing special visitors to your island and surmised that Redd will appear approximately once every two weeks, according to the schedule for special island visitors. Shortly after this discovery, a helpful internet soul created this handy infographic:

A little graphic to understand when you will see certain characters on your island see the full Instagram post for even more info on this – data mined info by —#AnimalCrossing#ACNH#AnimalCrossingSwitch#NewHorizonsâ 8BitBish May 17, 2020

So, once Saharah, Kicks and Leif have visited, the two remaining weekday slots will be taken up by two of the five other characters – the ones that don’t come get priority the following week. Assuming this data is correct, it’s possible that Redd won’t visit for a full two weeks, although he’ll definitely visit the week after that.

You can head to the northern shore of your island to check if Redd is there, but the easiest way to see if Redd is visiting is to open the map on your NookPhone and see if the Jolly Trawler is docked there.

Which Of Redds Paintings Are Fake In Animal Crossing

Here is where things get a little complicated. Every painting not mentioned above has a fake version out there and it can be hard to tell which is real and which isnt. But dont worry, we have you covered, so you can examine what you are getting and tell Redd where to go if he is trying to dupe you.

How To Differentiate Between Real And Fake Art

Every art piece sold by Redd is based on a real-world art piece. All the fakes ones are slightly different from their real-world counterparts.

Fortunately, you can take a closer look and inspect an art piece before buying it. To inspect an art piece, simply go up to it, interact with Redd and select I want a closer look in the dialogue menu.

Unfortunately, the art pieces in Redds clove arent named the same as their real-world counterparts, so you might need to dig around a bit to find out the real art piece.

Once youve purchased the artwork, take it straight to Blather the owl at the museum to determine the credibility of the artwork. If its genuine, hell accept it in the museum but if its a fake, you just simply wasted a lot of money.

Its a matter of utmost importance to choose the genuine piece, as you can only purchase one of the four artworks at once from Redd. On top of that, he has an unpredictable schedule so you never know when hell be back with more. Some players argued that one out of the four pieces is genuine, but this theory was bunked as sometimes Redd came with more than one genuine item while on other occasions he packed four counterfeits

Can You Contribute Fake Artwork In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing New Horizons | How to Spot FAKE Paintings & Statues – Redd Art Guide

If Timmy and Tommy Nook can inform whats fake or real, then you do not stand much chance of persuading museum manager Blathers to make fake artwork off your hands. As a result, you cant contribute fake art to Blathers at the museum in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

In our experience, Redd vanishes for a while after slinging his fake items. Its not yet clear if this is a laying low duration or simply the nature of his randomized looks in any case, attempt not to fall victim to his dubious methods as you can neither contribute or offer any forgeries you incorrectly purchase in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

What To Do With Fake Paintings And Sculptures In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

What is it good for?

You can obtain fine art in Animal Crossing: New Horizons with the latest update for Nature Day. It adds a new wing for your museum where you can hang up fine art such as sculptures and paintings found all over the world. To unlock it, you need to speak to Blathers. Once you open it, you need to talk to a new merchant in the game, Redd, who provides you with all of the paintings.

However, Redd plays fastball with his customers. While hes offering you an excellent family discount for any piece of art you want for your museum, of the four provided items in his inventory, three of them are fake, and only one is real. You need to be able to tell which one of them is real to place them in the museum. Blathers will know immediately if its a fake, and wont accept it.

What do you do with fake art because you cant place it in the museum? Unfortunately, you cant sell it to Tommy or Timmy. Its worthless to them. You wont be able to hand it out to other villagers, either. The best thing for you to do with a fake piece of art is to place it somewhere in your home or on your island to display the forgery for other villagers or visitors. Alternatively, you can toss it right in the trash and have it out of your inventory. Because its not doing anything else, its mostly a waste of space.

What To Do If You Receive Fake Paintings In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Hello! I have a fun fact for youtoday is International Museum Day! We’re celebrating by hosting a special event at your local museum now through the end of the month. You can even unlock special items, so I hope you get a chance to check it out.

If you do end up with a fake painting, Blathers wont accept it as a donation. Villagers wont let you gift them fake art, either. Whats left, then? You can always throw the art in a garbage bin or leave it on a mystery island. However, another option is to keep it around and use it for decoration, even if its fake.

Some fake paintings even come with haunted spirits attached you might spot a few eyes blinking. With Animal Crossing: New Horizons Halloween event right around the corner, a haunted painting could be the perfect spooky decor.

Animal Crossing Art Guide: How To Spot Fake Art Paintings And Statues

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Redd is now a regular fixture in the world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The sly fox first appeared around the same time as Nature Day, and now he regularly putters up in his smoke-belching trawler hawking paintings, statues, and unique furniture, trying to pass off a fake Mona Lisa next to blue jar of protein powder. The trick is this: he sells both real and fake art, and telling the difference can be quite difficult without an Art History degree. Ive written about this before, but since then weve had some more information about his behavior, and wanted to get a definitive guide out there. So, heres what you need to know about Redd, his paintings, his statues, and how to outmaneuver him.

Getting Redd and Expanding the Museum: Youll need to satisfy the requirements to open up the Art Gallery in the museum before Redd will start appearing on your island. This means you need to donate a total of 60 bugs, fish and fossils to Blathers, which shouldnt be all that hard. After that, Blathers will tell you that he will now take art donations.

The next day, youll find Redd wandering around your island. Hell sell you one real piece of art, which you can give to Blathers and trigger the upgrade to build a Art Gallery expansion to the Museum.

Animal Crossing Detail Can Help Tell Real Paintings From Fake Ones

Heres what to do with fake art in Animal Crossing New ...

An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player discovered a minor detail Nintendo added that can help gamers tell real paintings from fake ones.

A minor detail in Animal Crossing: New Horizons can help players tell real paintings from fake ones, preventing gamers from getting embarrassed by Blathers’ discerning eye. Filling up the museum in Nintendo’s life simulation game is a long-term project and players will be tasked with fishing, bug-hunting, and evaluating Animal Crossing art pieces to keep Blathers, the museum curator, happy. This will mean hunting down genuine works of art around the island and bringing them back to find a new home in the art exhibit. The problem is, finding out which ones are real and which ones are forgeries has always been a struggle. Especially when Redd attempts to sell a player a fake, costing them quite a few bells.

The fine details in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are what make the game so special. In the real fine art world, there is a process of documenting who possessed a painting before the current owner and for how much it was sold. These documents show the succession over years and even decades, and they help provide greater authenticity to a work of art. It’s incredible that Nintendo added that into Animal Crossing: New Horizons with a minor detail many have missed.

If you arent careful, youll wind up with a forgery. If you get a fake painting or statue, you cannot donate it to the museum and you cannot sell it at Nooks Cranny. Thats a bummer, huh? So, what can you do with them? Youll have to either dispose of them using a trash can or recycling bin or you can simply display it like any old piece of furniture.

To help you avoid getting caught out, well explain exactly what the deal is with Fake Art in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Be Careful With Redds Artwork In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

How to Tell if Art is REAL or FAKE in Animal Crossing New Horizons!

In April 2020, Nintendo updated Animal Crossing: New Horizons to add an art section to Blathers museum. With the expansion came Jolly Redds Treasure Trawler, a floating shop where Redd sells paintings, statues, and furniture. Players can buy the art to donate to the museum, but only if the pieces are authentic. Redd will also only sell one piece of art per day, so players need to be observant to choose the real items.

Thankfully, Redd does let players look closely at a piece before buying. The art is often based on real-life art, and fake pieces will have slightly out-of-place details. For example, one painting is based on the Mona Lisa. In the counterfeit version, her eyebrows have sharp angles, while the real version shows straighter brows. If you arent sure which details are authentic, you can always check out an art guide.
