Animal Crossing: New Horizons – How to find fossils

Fossils are back for Animal Crossing New Horizons. Here’s what you need to know.

Guideby Jake Green, Guides Editor

While exploring your island in Animal Crossing you’ll occasionally get the chance to dig up Fossils. If you’re new to the series, you might not know what to do with them, but you should know that they are an extremely good way of making Bells and building up your museum. We’ll teach you everything you need to know in this guide.

How To Check Fossils You Already Have

If youre unsure whether or not youve found the same fossil twice, you can pull up the Nook Shopping catalog to see what fossils youve already collected.

You can open up the catalog either at the Nook Stop kiosk in Resident Services or via the app on your NookPhone. To unlock the Nook Shopping app, youll have to have purchased 100 items directly from the catalog.

Once you have it installed, select the section containing wallpaper, flooring, and more. The and more in question is actually fossils, amongst other miscellaneous items. Scroll over to the fossils tab, and youll see a list of every fossil youve ever cataloged.

Buried Items Found When Dug Up

Fossils are buried items that you can find when you dig through the star-shaped cracks on the ground. They are blue, circular rocks with shell & star designs.

Limited Ground Cracks Per Day

Just like in previous games, the number of fossils on your island is limited. You can collect a maximum of 4 fossils per day, so don’t forget to do this every day!

How To Easily Check Fossils You Already Have

Animal Crossing New Horizons: How to Get Fossils

One easy way to check which fossils youve already found and likely donated is to make use of the Nook Shopping feature! Head to the Nook Stop terminal at Resident Services, or the Nook Shopping app on your NookPhone if youve unlocked it, and select the icon showing wallpapers and flooring.

Inside this misleadingly named section featuring wallpaper and flooring items, youll find a Fossils tab towards the end of the sections at the top of the screen. Select the Fossils tab to get a handy list of every Fossil item that youve ever cataloged!

You can use this catalog list to help deduce which fossils youre missing so far in conjunction with our complete fossil list below. Both the in-game list and our list in this guide are sorted in the same alphabetical order, so its pretty easy to compare.

Its worth noting that this list includes any Fossil that your character has ever picked up for any reason. That means if youve ever gotten new fossils and chose to sell them for Bells rather than donate, then you might see them in your list even if they havent been donated. Or if you sent it to a friend instead of donating yourself.

If thats the case, your only other option will be to manually go through your entire Museum checking the display plaques to put together a list of every Fossil youve donated. Unfortunately, Animal Crossing: New Horizons doesnt seem to have a handy donated items menu like in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

How To Complete The Fossil Exhibit In The Museum In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

If you want to complete the fossil exhibit at the Museum in New Horizons, then you need to donate one of every single fossil found in the game.

This is a task that, thanks to how the fossils are randomly selected, will most likely take you a couple of months, especially if you’re the only player living on your island.

All you can do is continue digging up the fossils that appear around your island and handing them in for assessment with Blathers.

If you have friends who play New Horizons, however, and they find one of your missing fossils, then they can always give you the fossil and then you can donate it to the Museum.

To discover which fossils you’re missing, head down into the fossil exhibit. There you’ll be able to interact with the various displays, whether you’ve completed them or not, and it will hopefully give you an idea about exactly which fossils you need to complete the exhibit.

Sadly, the only reward you’ll receive for completing the Museum in New Horizons is Blathers’ smile, but at least he’s happy.

How To Find Fossils In New Horizons

To find all of the fossils on your island each day, for the most part, youll only need the Vaulting Pole and a Flimsy Shovel. While they break quite quickly when used to farm iron nuggets from rocks, the Flimsy Shovel actually holds up rather well when used for digging.

Each fossilis found in the X- mark on the floor, which you can see below:

To dig outthe fossil, all you need to do is stand over the X-mark, equip your shovel by pressingleft or right on the d-pad, face the X-mark, and then press A. Youll dig up afossil every time.

You can findthese fossil-hiding X-marks on the grass of your island every day, so be sureto use the Vaulting Pole to access all areas and dig them all up.

Fossils arecompletely randomised each day, so you dont have to worry about certainfossils only appearing in certain seasons. You could dig up any fossil at anytime.

You can alsofind a glimmer dig spot on the floor each day. If you dig where the sparkle is,youll find 1,000 Bells.

If you use your collected Nook Miles to visit Mystery Islands, as detailed in this guide, you can find at least two more fossil digs on each island that you visit. However, each Nook Miles Ticket costs 2,000 Nook Miles to purchase.

When it comes to actually retrieving these prehistoric marvels, youre going to want to first have a shovel. This can be crafted at a workbench or Tom Nooks DIY bench for five hardwood and one iron nugget.

When you have it, youre going to want to look for mounds in your island that look like something is buried beneath them.

Then, you need to stand facing these mounds and use your shovel on them by pressing A.

Your character will dig and theres a chance you can end up with a fossil! Theres also a chance to get a pitfall or some bells.

When it comes to finding out what these fossils are exactly, youre going to want to head over to the museum. There, you will be greeted by Blathers.

You can hand over to him the fossils you dug up and hell tell you what they are.

From there, you can donate them to the museum to add them to the collection if they dont already have them, or you can sell them for a good chunk of bells!

Oh, and new to the series is that you can actually place them around your island, too! Your very own Jurassic Park.

How To Complete The Museum Fossil Room In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

If you are in the habit of taking walks around the land available to your island and taking advantage of its resources, you will find star-shaped marks on the ground every day . That’s where the fossils wait for you to collect them. You will have to use the shovel at those specific points to excavate and add the fossils to your inventory. Once you do this, the first thing to do is take them to Socrates , who will offer to examine them to find out what they are about. Once you do, you will have to make the decision if you want to donate them to the museum or if you want to keep them to sell in the Mini Nook store. If you donate them, you will lose them in your inventory, but you will be able to see them displayed in the museum’s own fossil room , something that you will surely want to complete.

Animal Crossing Wiki Guide

Animal Crossing is the place to be for archeologists. As you look for buried treasures under those tell-tale X marks, you will often unearth mysterious fossils. Unfortunately, as you have no clue what they are, these “raw” fossils are pretty worthless. Nobody will buy them and they have no display value whatsoever. However, there is a museum and research facility somewhere that you can mail your fossils to. They will examine and study the fossils, clean them up and send them back to you. Once the museum has contacted you by mail, you will be able to choose “museum” as a destination when writing a letter. The actual content of the letters doesn’t matter. Just type something quick, attach the fossil, and off with it to the post office.

Selling dinosaur bones, eggs, and footprints is a lucrative business. But you can of course also try and collect them or donate them. While some of the smaller fossils come in single glass cases, the larger skeletons are usually made from three pieces: head, body, and tail. The only problem with collecting fossils is the amount of space they take up in your home. No matter what treasures you possess, a three-part dinosaur pretty much becomes the centerpiece of your home — with not much room for anything else. That’s why you’re better off donating the fossils to the museum .

How To Dig Up Fossils

Animal Crossing: Skamieliny, fossils

You won’t be able to dig up fossils when you first arrive at your deserted island – in fact, you wont even be able to find them at all.

First, you must entice Blathers to come to your island by catching 5 fish or bugs to give to Tom Nook, who will convince Blathers to set up a tent. Once he arrives, speak to him to gain a Vaulting Pole recipe to cross the river where fossils appear, and also the shovel recipe to dig up these fossils. Note that once you begin digging them up, they’ll start to appear all over the island – not just across the river.

Blathers will then identify and take donated fossils – although they will not be displayed until you can get a permit to construct an actual museum – which needs 15 more donated items.
