Significantly Improved Character Customization
In New Horizons, you can choose your look from the get-go and change it mid-game. This is a major change from previous Animal Crossing;games, in which your features were permanently determined by a short personality-like quiz at the start. Additionally, in the past, people;of color couldnt actually play as characters;who resembled them at least not for long. You had to go through the trouble of tanning your character during the summer. That meant staying outside for hours until your skin visibly darkened for a short while,;before it returned to a lighter hue.
Now;youll be able to choose from a range of skin tones,;in addition to new hairstyles and colors, mouth shapes, and nose shapes. You could say the bar hasnt been high here, but it nonetheless comes as an incredibly welcome feature.

Assuming you do have the game, sit back and relax as we’ll take away the stress of your new island, let’s begin.
New Collectibles Expanded Gardening
Why not add a few more collectibles to the game? We already have fish, bugs and, as of New Leaf, deep sea creatures . What about gem or mineral collecting as an expansion of the simple break-a-rock-to-find-gold system currently in place? With a new pickax tool, players could go around, mining rocks for rubies, sapphires, diamonds, emeralds, topaz, opal, amethyst, garnet and any other variety of precious or semi-precious gems. Additionally, players could also mine granite, quartz, basalt, sandstone and other types of rocks. Seasonality wouldnt affect which gems and minerals could be collected throughout the year, but it would affect selling prices. Plus, new material types means more crafting options from Cyrus; who wouldnt want a mansion decked-out in pink gold or diamond? Overall, we think this could be a neat addition to the game, all cataloged in the same way fish, bugs and deep sea creatures are.

Holidays & Seasonal Activities
Animal Crossing: New Horizons regularly receives updates that correspond with the seasons or holidays from that time of year. So, for instance, when April rolls around, Zipper T Bunny appears on your island for the Bunny Day event and gives you the task of locating special eggs.
Going along with this seasonal tie-in, the characters, stores, and facilities on your island do different things depending on the time of day or time of the year. You need to pay attention to store hours, or you might find that a store has locked up for the night. Additionally, Flick hosts the Bug Off on specific days of the year while C.J. runs a Fishing Tourney four times a year.
With the fall update, leaves change colors on your island, and players meet Jack the pumpkin-headed specter around Halloween. The following month, players get to celebrate the harvest in November by gathering ingredients for Franklin the Turkey Chef on Thanksgiving.
Lastly, the winter update brings a chill to your island, followed by a blanket of snow. . Players meet Jingle, the Black-nosed reindeer, who asks for help distributing Santa’s toys to your villagers. If you help him out, you’ll be rewarded with festive goodies.
Spend Those Nook Miles And Visit Other Islands
Dont be afraid of running out of Nook Miles. They start off as an achievement system, which gives the impression that theyre limited. Tom Nook will eventually upgrade your Nook Miles plan to Nook Miles+, which adds a series of five rotating, repeatable achievements that can steadily give you Nook Miles as you play. You wont run out of Nook Miles , and you can easily grind for more using the upgrade.
This is useful in the early game when you want to collect iron nuggets to upgrade the Resident Services tent, and if you want more than just two other residents on your island. When Dodo Airlines opens, you can spend 2,000 Nook Miles for a Nook Miles Ticket. This ticket takes you to a new, smaller deserted island randomly generated in the game. The island has fresh rocks you can hit with your shovel to collect iron nuggets. Each rock can only be hit three times a day, so youre limited on your own island with how many nuggets you can possibly get in a day. Going to new islands will get those nuggets pouring in.
The other deserted islands also have different fruits you can collect, which help diversify your own islands flora. You can get more wood, sticks, and flowers on the island, too. You can even meet new characters that you can invite to your island. Youll discover a new animal friend if you find a campfire on the deserted island. Talking to them twice lets you invite them to your own island, growing the community.

No Cloud Save Backups
Nintendo has confirmed you wont be able to transfer;Animal Crossing;user data between Switch consoles. This means that, should you lose or damage your Switch and buy another, you will lose all your progress and have to start over again However, using Google Translate on the games Japanese site;uncovers;some text that states Nintendo is;considering a function to back up saved data in a unique form of this software in case of failure, loss or theft of the Nintendo Switch itself. The text specifies that;use of this function is limited to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, and that this currently remains undecided.
Play The Stalk Market
Playing the Stalk Market is a pretty reliable way to increase your weekly revenue. You can buy turnips on Sundays from Daisy Mae for prices that usually hover around 100 bells. For the rest of the week, you can check in the morning and the afternoon at the Nook’s Cranny store to see the rates for turnips. The goal is to buy low and sell high.
A few important notes: Turnips rot after a week, so you can’t just hoard them waiting for a giant payday. They also rot if you travel back in time. And checking prices twice a day takes time, so you probably don’t want to start investing in turnips until the time is worth the payoff. I don’t invest unless I have at least 50,000 bells. Then, even a small rise in prices can lead to a significant return. If you want to get intense about it, you can even check out websites that fans have built to calculate the trajectory of the Stalk Market across the week.

Use A Stone Ax Not An Iron One
If we’ve learned anything over the past few millennia, it’s that iron cuts down trees better than stone does, right? Well, in Animal Crossing, you might not actually want to cut down your trees; you might just want wood, soft wood or hard wood for crafting. Luckily, the stone ax extracts those types of wood without chopping down the tree.
Super Smash Bros Items
The Villager has been taking part in Super Smash Bros. fights since accepting their invitation in the 3DS/Wii U version, and yet has nothing to show for it. How about some souvenirs of their exploits in the game? A Smash Ball? The saber sword? The invitation letter itself? Id love to see some of these items mounted on the wall. I think Nintendo could have some fun with this.

What Fruits Are Available
There are six fruits to collect:;
One fruit will grow natively on your island, but if you want to grow them all so you can sell them to earn Bells , youll have to travel.
Use Nook Miles Tickets, which you can purchase from the Nook Stop in Resident Services, to temporarily travel to another island to collect fruit and other resources. You can also swap fruits with fellow Animal Crossing players.;

Getting Crafty And Hunting For Materials
Originally incorporated in the Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp mobile game, players have the chance to get crafty and create their own items using materials found while exploring. You won’t have a personal bench to start, but that’s OK. Tom Nook has a workbench for you to craft whatever you need, for free!
Tom Nook’s shop is the place to go if you want to buy or sell materials or anything else you’re carrying around, including weeds. Of course, if you’re a hoarder , you’ll want to hold on to those materials. Those materials are useful for building all sorts of items, like the “flimsy ax” used to chop down trees. Of course, getting a new item can help you gather even more materials, and sometimes some rare components may just pop up.
You can use just about anything to build new items, from wood to weeds. Players can uncover recipes to craft items using the NookPhone under the DYI Recipes app, which has tons of recipes for tools, furniture, clothes, bait, and more. All the information you’ll need to build is found right in the recipe, down to the number of resources. As you learn these recipes and become a master, you can take them to the next level by adding your own personal twist, like a funky pattern.

Play With The New Horizons Joycons
Those who nabbed the;Animal Crossing: New Horizons;Switch before it sold out, congrats. Once you’ve cleared the main tutorial, check your mailbox just outside your tent. Voila – there’s one ACNH Switch with your name on it! This is how I got the special item, which was a nice surprise at the start of the game.
It’s worth noting that the system recognizes not the console itself, but specifically the Pastel Blue and Pastel Green JoyCons. So, if you’re one of the lucky souls who snagged the JoyCons on their own, congrats! Just pop them onto your console, boot up your game, and you’re good to go.
However, if not, good luck out there. The JoyCons are sold out almost everywhere, at the time of this writing, and the aftermarket prices are marked up to high heck. We’ve seen sets listed for well over $199.99 USD, which is significantly over the suggested MSRB of $79.99. However, US prices don’t totally apply here – the JoyCons are actually Japan-exclusive, so you’ll have to import them.
Complicating things further, however, is the global pandemic of COVID-19. As per Nintendo Soup, the JoyCons are facing production delays due to the outbreak, with no real ETA on when they’ll be in stock. That means that most people hoping to get their hands on the JoyCons right now will be out of luck.
But New Horizons Has Real Frustrations
With New Horizons, Nintendo addressed hurdles that prevented some people from getting into Animal Crossing. And while a list of achievements like Nook Miles demystifies the game, Im willing to trade some of the illusion to get a more rewarding game overall.
My deeper frustrations with New Horizons dont stem from a comparison to New Leaf. Im still more hung up on the interface and multiplayer.
Before I get into this, Ill admit that I just spent a lot of words critically examining Nintendos decisions to streamline and modernize Animal Crossings mechanics. Now, Im going to beg the company to streamline and modernize its user experience. But Ill gladly declare myself a hypocrite to not have to go through four button presses and an animation to build one DIY recipe.
I get that Nintendo wants to make Animal Crossing feel conversational, and it should maintain that when it comes to the villagers and maybe even the shopkeepers and Tom Nook. But I dont want to have a conversation with my workbench or the airline.
Let me queue up recipes in my workbench and hook the bench into my homes storage. When I want to go online, I get that Nintendo wants me to go the airport. But then just give me all of the options in a single menu. Its baffling that if I choose the wrong option, I cant just go back one menu. I instead have to start the conversation over from the beginning.
