Tomorrow, Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be transporting Nintendo Switch users to a bright, tropical destination to live their best virtual lives. Aside from living alongside a colorful cast of critters, you also get to design your perfect island getaway, collect resources to craft tools and items, decorate your vacation home and more.
With New Horizons joining the roster of the Animal Crossing series of games, lets take a look back on the franchise and how this cutesy, open-ended life simulator achieved worldwide success.
2001: Animal Crossing
The first Animal Crossing came out on the GameCube console and featured the player as a young girl or boy whos ready to start a new life in a small village.;
After discovering your lack of accommodations, shopkeeper Tom Nook offers you a house and allows you to work for him to pay off your debt. Once the debt is paid, you take on odd jobs and errands for the villagers, including picking fruits and catching fish and insects.
What gives this game its charm is its atmosphere, with days, nights and seasons closely following real-life, interactions with quirky and unique villagers and shopkeepers, even celebrating similar holidays through certain activities.;

Animal Crossing: New Leaf
The fourth and final mainline entry is both the best-selling and highest-rated in the series, and for good reason. Building from the same central;concept established by its predecessors ,;New Leaf;set itself apart by being the most feature and character-packed;Animal Crossing game of them all.
Released on the Nintendo 3DS in Japan in 2012 and worldwide in 2013,;New Leaf’s set itself apart from previous games. While keep the central elements of gameplay intact,;this game started;with the player arriving in a new town only to be mistaken for the town’s new Mayor.;As;the Mayor, players received an unprecedented level of control over the developments and layout of their town. Through Public Works Projects;and Ordinances,;players could construct new bridges and facilities and make shops open earlier or close later.
Additionally, players could use the 3DS’s StreetPass feature to participate in the Happy Home Showcase, allowing them to share and view their villager’s homes and furnishings with;those they happened to pass while out in the real world. In 2016,;New Leaf;was updated;to add;Amiibo;support and a new camp site area.
Nintendo Entertainment System Games
Players can collect various Nintendo Entertainment System games in Animal Crossing, which are playable via emulation. North American releases are packaged with a memory card that automatically gives the player two games upon creating a game file. Others are acquired in various ways, such as gifts from villagers, hidden on the island, or via special giveaways from Nintendo’s website. The available NES games differ slightly between each release.

Four additional NES games are not obtainable in-game through normal means. In North America, two of these games, Ice Climber and , were released through the use of two e-Reader cards, which were not distributed in Europe or Japan. Japanese players received Ice Climber as a gift if they used a special service provided by Nintendo to transfer their save data from Dbutsu no Mori to Dbutsu no Mori+; this service has since been discontinued. Super Mario Bros. was distributed in Japan as a Famitsu prize to Dbutsu no Mori+ players. The Legend of Zelda exists in the game’s code, but is not accessible in-game. These four bonus games can be obtained using a cheat device in earlier GameCube releases, but were removed in Dbutsu no Mori e+.

Nuts To Parochial Backwaters: Lets Go To The City
Portable play is all well and good, but what if you had a real hankering for that classic big screen experience on your 12-inch CRT with only one working speaker? With the 2006 launch of the Wii came a two year wait before the series returned to home consoles with Animal Crossing: Lets Go To The City!. Or at least thats what it was called in Europe. In North America it went by Animal Crossing: City Folk because Nintendo of America refuse to publish any game with more than five words in the title. To be honest, we endorse such practices and wish they were still employed; it would avoid multi-syllable embarrassments like Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the Necrodancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda or that Dragon Quest XI: The Longest Title In The History Of The WorldEver! Definitive Edition.
If the name didnt give it away at all, Lets Go To The City allows you to venture outside the peaceful tranquillity of your town and, yes, go to a city. That was about the only major difference between this and Wild World, though, and the game was criticised for being too similar to its predecessor. Part of that may be because its based on exactly the same game engine as the DS version. You could have more villagers, your own home rather than sharing one with anyone else who had a character in the game, but much of City Folk was subject to only very minor changes.
Fan Made Towns Bring The Horror Genre To Life
Animal Crossing has always emphasized letting players create their own little worlds. Many build cozy hamlets, but more than a few have opted to build small nightmares. While the franchise doesn’t offer as much open-ended freedom as titles like Dreams or LittleBigPlanet, many creepy little towns have popped up in Animal Crossing that use environmental storytelling to create Silent Hill-esque experiences.
Two of Animal Crossing‘s most famous user-made creepy towns are Aika Village and Hitokui from New Leaf. While Aika uses symbolism, scary music, and carefully placed objects to tell a horrifying story, Hitokui goes for full shock value with obvious gore that gives players Texas Chainsaw Massacre flashbacks. Admittedly, some of the creep factor is diminished by NPCs who only speak Japanese, but these towns still put the creative creepiness of players on full display.
Moreover, as technology improved, so did the tools players could use to customize their towns and villagers. Since players can now design more elaborate custom patterns, many have created blood splatters that bring the creepy villager meme to life.

The Wild World Of Animal Crossing Speedrunning
For most of us, Animal Crossing represents a much-needed escape from our fast-paced day to day lives. In Nintendos idyllic series, we can take a relaxing stroll through a digital neighbourhood, spend socializing with our animal neighborhods, or go fishing to fill our towns aquarium with exotic specimens. All of this is especially salient with;New Horizons, a game that released just as many localities around the United States were declaring lockdowns and shelter in place orders in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19.;
But a small group of players has chosen to reject the intended Animal Crossing experience, opting instead to race through the game as fast as possible. Thats right, people speedrun Animal Crossing. ;But how did a low-key lifestyle simulator develop such a passionate speedrunning community? And what even constitutes finishing a game that has traditionally had no definitive ending?;
Are There Any New Animal Crossing Games Coming Out
A game in the series for Nintendo Switch was announced in a Nintendo Direct in September 2018 known as Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Set on a deserted island, it was released on March 20, 2020. Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is a community simulation video game for the Nintendo 3DS and the first spin-off of the Animal Crossing series.

Gyroids In The Animal Crossing Franchise
Inspired by the Haniwa clay figurines that resemble humanoids, Gyroids was a furniture item that players could find alongside fossils buried underground. Gyroids were introduced in the first;Animal Crossing game and were a staple in every game up until;Animal Crossing: New Horizons;where they;were not included. Gyroids act as a furniture item that occasionally emits a sound based on the family, type, and size of the Gyroid when activated. Only a certain number of Gyroid can be switched on at any given time in a room, and when this number is exceeded another will turn off.
Lloid is the only Gyroid to make an appearance in;Animal Crossing: New Horizons much like in past games as the NPC who collects donations for public work projects. This means that Gyroids do exist in;New Horizon’s;universe, though whether they will make a return is still up to Nintendo. Typically Gyroid will spout random noise if they’re activated, though if there is music playing they will try to stick to the beat of whatever music is playing. Though the player can normally have a limited amount of Gyroids activated at any given time, the combination of Gyroid and music would make for a unique;ambiance for different parts of a player’s island if Gyroids were to make a return.
Ooo Baby Baby Its A Wild World
Even though the game had started small and local, Animal Crossings success was global, so when it came time to make a sequel Eguchi made sure to change things around for as broad a demographic as possible. Everything from fish, to bugs, to fossils, to holidays were re-designed with an international, multicultural market in mind. The platform choice was a bold move as well, as even though the GameCube had sold a respectable number of units, this new game would be shrunk down onto the tiny Nintendo DS instead.
Despite its size, the DS packed quite a punch features-wise including in-built features that the GameCube didnt possess, like a microphone that you could use to scream at other villagers to find out where they were. Parents loved that. Animal Crossing: Wild World also had the major advantage of not having to rely on being plugged into the wall at all times, meaning you could take your village with you wherever you went. The DS also technically had Wi-Fi capabilities, so you could visit other peoples villages locally or non-locally using the patented Friend Code system and even send them charming or rude messages.
Wild World was a marvel back in the day, a handheld jewel that married the charm of the series with the convenience of portability. The Wii U Virtual Console version neutered that convenience somewhat, but this entry sucked hundreds of wonderful hours from us back on DS.

Looking To New Horizons
Still, Tom Nook’s most audacious scheme was reserved for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which launched on Nintendo Switch in 2020. Tricky Tom has sold you a travel package to a deserted island paradise, and expects you and a couple of fellow scam vict erm, holidaymakers, to develop a new settlement from scratch, beginning with nothing more than some hastily erected tents. Thanks to the island’s lack of basic infrastructure, it has you exploring the island to gather raw materials a pretty crucial part of the crafting system, which allows you to build new tools and furniture.;
There’s a rather agreeable hippy commune vibe to this whole arrangement, until you remember that a certain raccoon is getting a ready-made holiday resort out of the whole deal. New Horizons offers an unprecedented freedom to develop your community, as you can choose where animals set up their new homes and even reshape the island itself with the new magic shovel, a feature fans have dreamed of for years.
The series has been on quite the journey, since Dobutsu no Mori made its debut on April 14, 2001. 20 years later, Animal Crossing has surely surpassed even Nintendo’s wildest expectations. New Horizons is the fast-selling Nintendo game in Europe and one of the company’s best-selling games of all time. It’s reported that Animal Crossing: New Horizons shifted 31.18 million copies in 2020 alone, making it the second highest-selling Switch game so far.;
What Is Animal Crossing

Players assume the role of a person whose neighbors are assorted animals. There’s no real structure to the game, which allows individual players to choose their own experience by engaging in activities that range from catching bugs and fishing to planting things and interacting with the animals.;
As gaming website Kotaku summed up the series’ appeal in 2011, “Animal Crossing;has never been much of a traditional video game. There aren’t enemies to fight or many directed quests to go on. It’s more of a play space and a realm of collecting and self-expression.”
That nontraditional approach has clearly resonated with gamers. The nonlinear series, which makes;extensive use of the;video game console’s clock and calendar to simulate real time as trees grow and flowers bloom, has sold more than 30 million units worldwide.

New Horizons’ Fish Are Too Realistic
Animal Crossing launched on the Nintendo GameCube . The franchise has seen entries on every Nintendo console since then, and while its art style has remained consistent throughout, graphical fidelity occasionally improved to take advantage of newer, stronger hardware. Though these improvements were baby steps in past iterations, Animal Crossing: New Horizons features the best graphics of the franchise . which make its fish look absolutely terrifying.
Previously, fish in Animal Crossing were polygonal blobs that relied on textures to convey their fishy nature. In New Horizons, fish are hi-poly models that look far more realistic than previous incarnations, but not quite real enough. Prominent examples of fish that suffer from this effect are the ocean sunfish whose bulging eyes stare into your soul and the barreleye, which is already a creepy fish thanks to its translucent dome head and protruding, green eyes. Sometimes, there’s such a thing as too much realism.
Some Characters Are Just Plain Haunting
Animal Crossing is full of wild and colorful characters, all of whom are anthropomorphic animals. While this raises the obvious question of why the protagonist is the only human in the game, the more pressing question is why some characters go beyond simple anthropomorphism and cross into the realm of creepy.
Stitches, the patchwork teddy bear with cross marks where his eyes should be, is a prime example. Stitches’ mere existence raises numerous questions since Animal Crossing features living bear neighbors. How does Stitches see? Is Stitches even alive? The same questions apply to Coco, who appears to be a gyroid crossed with a rabbit. Not only does Coco maintain a terrifyingly blank expression, but her creep factor is dialed up to eleven because her house looks like a funeral pyre and is filled with gyroids.
Coco and Stitches aren’t Animal Crossing‘s only possible undead residents, though, as Lucky lurks throughout the franchise. His creep factor is dependent on whether you read his heavily bandaged body and single glowing eye as a sign that he is a mummy or recovering from a horrible injury.
Finally, there’s Pietro, the sheep clown. However, you might only find him creepy if you suffer from coulrophobia.

The Snowmen Are Alive Much To Their Despair
If you play Animal Crossing during the winter, you will probably want to build a snowman. Few players can resist participating in such an iconic wintertime activity. Moreover, snowmen spring to life once complete. While the surprise of a talking snowman is creepy on its own, the magic takes a turn for the bizarre if you mess up the snowman’s body.
Most people know how to make a snowman. You roll balls of snow and pile them on top of one another, with the largest ball forming the base and the smallest forming the head. However, if you accidentally screw up and place the larger ball on top, the snowman curses its existence with eloquence that belongs in a rendition of Frankenstein directed by William Shakespeare.
Okay, maybe their lamentations are kind of funny, but you cannot deny the inherent spook factor of snowmen gaining sentience at the drop of the hat.

In the world of Animal Crossing, you are mostly free to complete activities at your leisure. You are in no rush to dig holes, plant trees, and decorate your house. However, all that changes when you run into wasps, scorpions, and tarantulas.
While wasps aren’t as scary as ghosts, anyone who has encountered these living attack drones will tell you that you do NOT want to get on their bad sides. You can easily avoid wasps in the real world, but in Animal Crossing, you never know until it’s too late if a tree holds a nest. Once the wasp nest drops, you need to run for the nearest house to escape their stinging wrath.
Tarantulas and scorpions are slightly more tolerable since they are normally docile, but if they see you with a bug net, they will chase you with the vengeance of a thousand suns. While a tarantula, scorpion, or swarm of wasps only makes you pass out if they catch you , the chase is enough to terrify most players.
