Animal Crossing New Horizons takes players to an deserted island setting, allowing them to set up a camp and start building. It looks to be a continuation of ideas first set up in Animal Crossing Wild World, though there have been some notable changes to multiplayer this time around. While weve not seen everything the game has to offer yet we do know a fair bit about the multiplayer functionality. Lets take a look at whether the game supports couch co-op.

Why Do People Love Animal Crossing
Animal Crossing is a life simulator. Each game has you move to a new town inhabited by adorable anthropomorphic animals. The latest entry in the series, New Horizons, has you sailing to a deserted island after purchasing a holiday package from a raccoon called Tom Nook.
If youve never played an Animal Crossing game before, dont be put off. Theres no story or homework to catch up on to enjoy this outing. Im envious of anyone who hasnt already dipped their toes in. Theres so much to discover and fall in love with on your first outing.
The series began life on the GameCube in 2001, which established many of the franchises long-running characteristics. The most notable of these is a real-time clock and calendar that mirrors the real-life passage of time. The seasons change as they do in real life.;Playing at different times of day provides different things to see and do, too.
While the game offers many things to explore, the core gameplay loop is simple. When you start, youll be given a basic dwelling and a loan from Tom Nook. You earn currency to pay off your loan, which in turn upgrades your dwelling. Youll then be given a new loan to work off until youve got the biggest house in the village.
Although this might not sound compelling on paper, the way Nintendo presents Animal Crossing elicits a sense of calm and serenity that few other games can match. The naive art style, soft yet vibrant color palette, and lullaby-like music is good for the soul.

A Place To Hang Out With Friends
In addition to anthropomorphic NPCs, including several longstanding series favorites,;New Horizons offers several ways to play with your real-world friends. To start, each Nintendo Switch system will have a single island available to all users of that console.
This means that if youre sharing a Switch with your partner, housemates, or children, up to four of you will have a house on the same island. You will all be able to contribute items to the same museum, maintain and beautify the island as a group, and interact with the same residents. The first person on an island becomes the Resident Representative. You can play online with up to seven other friends via Nintendo Switch Online.
The Resident Representative is charged with building much of the major structures and advancements in the game. Only they can build ramps and bridges, customize the flag, and make changes to other core aspects of village life.
But you can still hang out with your friends, even if youre on different systems and different islands. This can be done remotely via Nintendo Switch Online, or locally via local wireless play. Its possible to visit each others islands, socialize with the residents, go fishing together, and more.
At a time when we are being told to stay away from one another, New Horizons offers an opportunity to just hang out and embrace the mundane.
Introduction To Animal Crossing
Animal Crossing is a series of games developed by Nintendo and released by Nintendo. The first game in this series was released in 2001 and the latest game in this series was released in 2020. Apparently, this series of games is very popular.
The content of the game is very simple. All the player needs to do is to play a human role of a “village” and lives in an anthropomorphic animal village. In the village, players are neighbors and interact with many animal partners, participate in activities such as exchanging furniture, fishing, catching bugs, etc.
Why is this game so popular? The main reason is that it is a highly liberalized game. Here are some examples:
- In this game, there is no mandatory task and no time limit. You can go on this game even if you don’t complete any tasks.
- The time in the game and the real time are fully synchronized. There will be different activities in specific festivals, such as Christmas, Halloween, etc., but if you miss these activities, you will have to wait until next year.
- Your different actions will have different consequences and you can’t start again. It’s a little like real life.

What Is Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a game for the Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite in which the player is tasked with bringing civilization to a deserted island.
The player starts out with little more than a tent and some basic tools, so to create their dream town, theyll need to forage, collect and scavenge. But with few missions and set objectives in the game, they have the freedom to do everything at their own pace.

Acorns will fall out of trees when you shake them! Note that this only occurs in Fall. In the Northern Hemisphere, this will be from September 1st to December 11th, and in the Southern Hemisphere this is from March 1st to June 11th. Their drop rate seems to be rather low, so have patience when going after them.

Animal Crossing On The Nintendo Switch Lite
While there are a handful of Switch games that dont work with the Switch Lite, Animal Crossing is not on that list. As Animal Crossing is designed to be played in handheld mode, with no special requirements for the dock or joy-cons, it works the same way on a Switch Lite as it does on the original Switch. If you already own an Animal Crossing game card, you can use it with your Switch Lite.;
Animal Crossing: New Horizons Connects Players Better Than Ever Before
Other improvements worth noting are the enhanced multiplayer and online features that are present in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Its very easy to connect with friends and have them visit the island, allowing up to eight players on a single instance. Theres a system in place ensuring that guests dont irreparably destroy the island, but theres also the ability to delegate players onto a best friends list if they can be trusted to not destroy everything.
There are a few aspects of the multiplayer and online functionality that sadly leave a bit to be desired. Deciding to share the game off of a single Switch isnt great, as theres no functionality to create another island. The new player is forced to play on the existing island, and aspects of progression are locked out by the other player. There is also no voice chat baked into the base game. Instead, I was required to use the Nintendo Switch Online app on a smartphone if I wanted to communicate with others. However, the biggest drawback is that save data cant be uploaded to the cloud or copied, but Nintendo has stated that theyre planning a solution for implementation within the year.

Are There Downsides To Buying Switch Games Digitally
Buying a game and having it delivered to you straight away is so convenient. Physical copies are great for collectors and the cases look nice, plus retailers can set competitive prices for physical copies, but if you just want to play a game, it’s hard to go back from instant downloads.
The big drawback in forgoing physical is you won’t be able to loan out your cartridge to a friend or resell the game when you’re done with it. If your friends all pick up their own copy , this is less of an issue.
The only other possible, distant concern with buying a game digitally instead of physically is that, one day, Nintendo could theoretically decide to turn off the digital store on Switch. Nintendo did this very thing with the Wii and DSi digital storefronts, and Nintendo is planning to turn off the ability to redownload Wii software at some point in the future.;
It’s not impossible that could happen again with the Switch store many years down the line, though given that downloads are more fundamental to this console than they were to the Wii, hopefully that will never be the case.;Either way, a physical copy would mean you won’t have to worry about that.;
In the here and now, it’s not worth worrying about, and hopefully the unifying of Nintendo’s various online operations on Switch and 3DS means there’ll be more continuity to the software you own in future. Microsoft has done a great job with this on its Xbox consoles, and Nintendo should take note.;
Unlocking The Special Pocket Camp Items In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The best part is even users who havent played Pocket Camp can avail themselves of these unique items. All in all, it requires downloading the game and progressing up to a certain point.
A thing to keep in mind before starting the process is to have the Pocket Camp account linked to the same Nintendo account that the Switch profile is linked to. This can be done by logging into Pocket Camp, accessing the main menu on the bottom right, and then selecting the My Nintendo option.
If the account linking process is complete, the available rewards will be displayed, including an ACNH Special Order Ticket. Also, those who play Pocket Camp get a bonus of 50 Leaf Tickets to utilize in the game. Click on the reward to redeem it free of cost.
Once redeemed, youll receive a download code and it sums up everything thats needed from Pocket Camp. Now, its time to get on your Switch. Head over to the eShop, and select the profile you will play Animal Crossing: New Horizons on.
After that scroll down to the Enter Code section on the left side, type in your download code, and hit Redeem. A download will begin shortly after doing this. Finally, boot up New Horizons on any profile on Switch and you will find the Pocket Camp content automatically added to the game.

How To Purchase The Animal Crossing Switch Parts Separately
This is going to get a little tricky, so prepare yourself. Nintendo’s Japanese store already has listings up for the individual Switch parts. However, since this store only ships orders within Japan, you’re going to need to purchase the individual parts from an online service that ships Japanese goods worldwide.
There are several options out there, but we recommend Zenmarket, which is helpful for anyone who either isn’t confident with their Japanese or who doesn’t know the language at all. If you have a firm grasp of the language and feel confident enough in your ability to fill out an order request in Japanese, you should check out Tenso. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to pay for the shipping service and tax in addition to the products you purchase, which can get expensive.
The Animal Crossing Switch was scheduled to release in Japan on March 20. However, the coronavirus has affected the supply chain, which means it could come out later than that. Since even the pre-order date has been pushed back to an unknown date, it’s possible that you won’t see the separate Switch parts showing up on these Japanese online marketplaces for quite awhile.
But don’t despair. You can always contact the services and give them a link to Nintendo Japan’s website to let them know what it is you’re trying to purchase. They might be able to make the order based on the URL. To help you out with that, here are the links for the separate Animal Crossing Switch parts on Nintendo Japan’s store:
