This guy is running a racket. Can we mention the widely held belief that Tom Nook isnt a racoon at all but a human in a racoon suit?

Spinoff Animal Crossing Sales Arent Too Great

I mentioned a bit earlier that Animal Crossing spinoffs havent sold as well as the rest of the franchise. Happy Home Designer sold 3.04 million units and amiibo Festival sold less than 1 million. On top of that Kimishima revealed that Nintendo has yet to reach a satisfactory level of revenue through its mobile games.

Pocket Camp isnt performing as well as they hoped. Even Super Mario Run has been struggling to pull in the money. The mobile game that has been most successful in sales has been Fire Emblem Heroes. Of course, Nintendo has been making changes to Pocket Camp to help it increase revenue.

While I see these things helping the game pull in more money, it seems as though the best money makers for Nintendo in regards to Animal Crossing are the mainline games. I could see the hybrid experience the Switch offers for gamers really benefit the Animal Crossing series giving more ways to enjoy their game.

E3 will also mark 5 years since the last mainline game has come out. I know I said it doesnt make sense to release a mainline Animal Crossing every year, but every 5 years doesnt seem troublesome.

Earlier in the year, Kimishima stated that their goal for 2018 was to sell 20 million switch units. It makes sense that Nintendo would put out big selling games that could help it achieve its goal of 20 million units in this year. Nintendo has since announced Super Smash Bros for 2018 and Pokemon for 2018 or 2019.

This Is A Series With Creepyness At Its Very Core

You barely have to look for creepiness in Animal Crossing its there everywhere you look. Sea turtle Kappn and his observations on the smell of your hair or uncomfortably direct inquiries about your relationship status all whilst trapped on his boat in the middle of the ocean !

But perhaps strangest of all is Annabelles fourth-wall breaking retelling of her dream during the DS era, where a giant, disembodied hand keeps poking me with a stylus. Wait, is this how Jim Carrey felt in The Truman Show?

It feels excessive to even mention that Animal Crossing has a character in it who is actually a ghost . She only appears, at between 12pm and 4am. Sure. Thats not creepy. Nope. Not at all.

If youre the type of person who likes to commit to one single game for long periods of time, New Horizons is a dream. If you like to play multiple games at once or, God forbid, juggle gaming time with reading or binge watching, its a waking nightmare.

A colorful, cheerful waking nightmare, which substitutes a grotesque Freddy Kruger monster for an enterprising raccoon named Tom Nook. But a nightmare nonetheless.

Animal Crossing doesnt really have an end. At a certain point, youre given an island rating and tasked with improving it to attract more villagers. So you can get a 5-star island, the highest rating on the scale, but does that mean you won Animal Crossing? I dont know.

In some ways, its not actually a game, more like an exercise in sculpting. Animal Crossing gives you a ton of clay, sometimes literally, and a set of tools. Then it lets you do whatever you want.

Its absolutely fine without Multiplayer, you arent really missing anything. I have 2 friends who I sometimes exchange presents with and acquiring different fruit is obviously is easier but in terms of gameplay it doesnt actually add anything other than seeing how other people are doing with their island.

A major update is coming to Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Nov. 5. In a video presentation Friday, Nintendo announced it will add more item storage, a permanent home for the games visiting merchants and the return of several characters from the series among other new content. Paid downloadable content called Happy Home Paradise, a $25 expansion that harks back to the franchises sandbox-style entry, Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, will also roll out the same day alongside a new series of amiibo cards that unlock new villagers.

Tom Nook will be making money on his vacation package, and by selling you everything you need to transform your new home into something more habitable.

And you? Youll be working hard to make it all possible, none the wiser that Tom Nook has duped you for probably the sixth or seventh time.

Dont Love: Load Times

Every time you enter a building theres a noticeable load time. Same goes entering a room inside that building, or even a fitting room in the Able Sisters Shop or when someone comes to visit your island.Ive spent a long time watching that basic circle closing transition screen and staring at a little island icon at the bottom right-hand corner of my screen. When Sony said the PS5 would significantly cut load times I thought it was cool but not groundbreaking since a lot of load times have already gotten better. Then I played ACNH. Suffice it to say Id love to see ACNH running on PS5 because these load times kill me.

The Only Saving Grace Is The Option To Visit Your Real

But if I log on and none of my friends are playing, there is literally nothing I want to do. The game relies heavily on its social aspects without other human players its world is lifeless, dead, and repetitive.

Even those social aspects are hard to access. Playing with friends requires you to be in the same physical location or have the Nintendo Online subscription, which costs an extra $3.99 a month. If your internet service is anything but flawless, its also prone to booting friends off your island unexpectedly. And even if all those things go well, you still need to navigate several dialogue boxes and watch unskippable cinematics just to get one friend on land.

My friend Chris, who has put so many hours into the game he refused to give me a definite count, says that at a certain point Animal Crossing becomes less of a resource-management game and more of a game about creativity/customization. Thats fine if youre a zen hoarder or want to re-create weird rooms that appear in Twin Peaks, but for $60 I expected much more than a slightly more interactive Myspace page.
